Part of the second 2 Series Gran Coupe generation introduced for 2025
Overview
The 2 Series Gran Coupe is BMW's smallest sedan. That's right, it's not a coupe. BMW calls its sedans with coupe-like styling Gran Coupes. The regular 2 Series, which is separately reviewed, is a coupe. But regardless of the body style, the 2 Series is the most affordable way to get behind the wheel of a BMW car. The Gran Coupe was redesigned last year with updated styling, more power and more tech. This year, a more affordable front-wheel-drive 228 Gran Coupe joins the lineup. Even though it's one of the most affordable BMWs, it has plenty to offer.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 228 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 7AM) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of N/A undefined in California.
Edmunds spotlight: The new 228 Gran Coupe base model isn't very base
The 228 Gran Coupe is front-wheel-drive, which is atypical for a BMW. Usually, the company's vehicles have rear-wheel drive for a classic driving experience or all-wheel drive for better traction for acceleration and foul weather. But its sharp handling and punchy engine should still please most luxury-sedan shoppers. The 228 Gran Coupe also comes generously equipped with the same features from the all-wheel-drive 228 xDrive. An adaptive suspension, which is typically optional for an entry-level model, is standard. It helps improve ride comfort and handling. Heated front sport seats wrapped in synthetic leather are also standard. There are plenty of tech features too. Overall, you're getting a lot of features for a pretty attractive price.
Competitors to consider
The only other extra-small luxury sedans to consider are the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA. We like the similarly priced A3 a lot; it's fun to drive and comfortable. The Audi was updated for 2025 with a restyled interior and exterior design and standard all-wheel drive. The CLA is all-new for 2026 and will come as an electric version. It will also have Mercedes' newest technology features. You might also look at BMW's X1 and X2 SUVs. They are similar in length and cost only a little more.
Which 2 Series Gran Coupe does Edmunds recommend?
We like the powerful M235 xDrive version, but if you're spending that much money, you might as well consider getting a base-level 3 Series. The new 228 Gran Coupe model is the way to go because it comes equipped with lots of standard features and enough power for most folks. If you want all-wheel drive, spring for the 228 xDrive Gran Coupe.

2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe M235 xDrive 4dr Sedan AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)
Just got my 2025 M235 and this car is asking to be driven and it is fast, this is my 5th BMW and it is loaded with any options you can think of, I had friends sitting in back seats and they told me that it is comfortable, unlike my X3 this one uses much less gas and so far it is showing 29 mpg combined , the only thing I’m really disappointed is no universal garage door opener and tires … are NOT run flat while you have no spare
