Pros
- Ride quality is smooth and comfortable on bumpy roads
- Nimble and secure handling
- Comfortable seats
- More features for the money compared to German alternatives
Cons
- Back seat is tight for the class
- Lackluster acceleration from six-cylinder models
- Limited storage and cargo space
What's new
- No significant changes expected for 2024
- Part of the third Lexus IS generation introduced for 2014
Overview
The 2024 Lexus IS line is the company's entrant in the small luxury sport sedan class, supporting the larger and more luxurious ES and LS models. The IS lineup includes the competent IS 300, the midrange IS 350 and the V8-powered IS 500. A significant refreshening in the 2021 model year gave the IS a new lease on life with updated technology and improved handling as well as a few style tweaks. With that in mind, we don't expect any significant changes for 2024.

Edmunds spotlight: Value but with a catch
On the surface, the 2024 Lexus IS lineup is priced similarly to other sport sedans in its class. Upon closer inspection, you'll notice that you get more standard features. Options are more affordable than the competition, too. But the IS was last redesigned in 2014 and it has fallen behind newer competitors. Compared to other sedans, the IS has cramped rear seats, for example, and the infotainment system isn't as advanced. Even performance, which is often touted by Lexus, trails the rest of the class. We point out all of the IS' advantages and drawbacks in our Expert Rating below.
Competitors to consider
The 2024 Lexus IS is at a disadvantage against its German rivals. Its aging platform is certainly one reason, but even in its earlier years, the IS fell short of expectations set by the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. You'll likely pay more for these alternatives to get all of the Lexus IS features, but for some buyers the added cost will be worth it.

Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
8.0/10
How does the IS drive? We tested the Lexus IS 350 F Sport. It's a fun and nimble sport sedan that's let down by an underpowered engine. In Edmunds' testing, our rear-wheel-drive test car accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. That's well off the pace of even the base four-cylinder variants of the class leaders. On the upside, this naturally aspirated V6 is silky smooth and builds power evenly from idle to redline. The transmission shifts gears a lot, but at least it's quick and smooth while doing it.
The IS' steering, brakes and overall handling are much more impressive than the engine. This luxury sedan is athletic and nimble, with responsive steering and a suspension that's firm enough to keep the car planted without feeling so stiff that midcorner bumps unsettle it. Our test vehicle included the optional adaptive suspension and limited-slip differential, both must-have options if you want to maximize the sportiness of your IS 350.

Comfort
8.0/10
How comfortable is the IS? Our IS 350 F Sport test car had the optional adaptive suspension. It gives the IS a taut ride quality but it's not so stiff that it will beat you up when going over bumps. The front seats don't have as many available adjustments as the seats in some other luxury sedans, but the basic shape is so good that you settle in quickly. The climate control system and the heated and ventilated seats work well to keep you comfortable. The car is quiet, too, though the F Sport's optional summer tires produce a bit more noise than we expect from a Lexus.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The driving position is excellent, with decent all-around visibility and easy-to-reach controls, but the back seat remains one of the smallest in the class. Getting in and out is a squeeze for adults, and passengers approaching 6 feet tall will feel cramped. The infotainment system's touchpad controller can be distracting to use when searching for various on-screen menus or buttons, but thankfully the display's touchscreen serves as a helpful workaround.
Technology
7.5/10
How’s the tech? The infotainment system uses a touchscreen interface, so controlling features such as the audio, navigation or standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is relatively simple. The IS features voice commands, too, though they're limited compared to some rival systems.
The IS comes with a suite of driver aids, including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance and automatic high beams. Blind-spot warning is standard too. That's a good lineup of features, but their operation lacks the polish of the class leaders. For example, the adaptive cruise is slow to respond and leaves large gaps between you and the car in front.

That's a good lineup of features, but their operation lacks the polish of the class leaders. For example, the adaptive cruise is slow to respond and leaves large gaps between you and the car in front.
Storage
6.5/10
How’s the storage? The IS' trunk space is near the bottom of the class for volume, but it is wide and tall, making it more usable than the cargo areas in some rival sedans with superior on-paper specs. The rear seats fold in a 60/40 split, so you can expand the space if you don't need the rear seats. Storage inside the cabin is really lacking. There's no good place to set your phone or sunglasses besides under the armrest.
The tight rear seat is a drawback when it comes to child safety seats, too. There's not much space to move around when you're anchoring a seat, and larger rear-facing seats will likely force front passengers to scoot forward.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? We tested a rear-wheel-drive Lexus IS 350 F Sport. This model gets an EPA-estimated 23 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That's better than most rivals with six-cylinder engines. The IS 350's combined figure drops to 22 mpg with all-wheel drive.
Value
7.5/10
Is the IS a good value? The Lexus IS offers a lot of features at a relatively affordable price. There are a few buttons and controls inside that feel a bit cut-rate, but most of the car is solidly constructed. Lexus' warranty and ownership experience are slightly above average. Lexus includes a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, and the powertrain gets a small improvement with six years/70,000 miles of coverage.
Wildcard
8.0/10
Especially in the F Sport versions, the Lexus IS has a distinct Japanese flair that helps it stand out in a crowd. The grille is still divisive, but we think it works well with the other design updates to the car's front and rear. The F Sport's styling does enough to give the IS some purpose without looking gaudy or overwrought. The interior, too, features a design that you won't find on anything coming out of Germany. The design is backed by a generally fun-to-drive nature. Yes, it's slower than most rivals, but the IS is pretty enjoyable on a winding road where raw horsepower is less of a factor.
Which IS does Edmunds recommend?
Lexus hasn't released official information on the 2024 IS as of this writing. We'll update our recommendation if anything changes, but based on last year's IS, we recommend the midrange IS 350. For a reasonable price increase, you get a noticeably more powerful engine, along with several added features. Within that model, we suggest checking out the full F Sport trim as it's eligible for the Dynamic Handling package. On top of that, all-wheel drive is a good add-on if you live in regions with inclement weather or if you're looking to maximize performance.

[The following unofficial information is based on last year's IS lineup. We expect the 2024 model will have a similar lineup and we'll update this section once we have complete information.] The Lexus IS is available in three main models that are distinguished by their powertrains. These include the IS 300, IS 350 and IS 500. The IS 350 and IS 500 models offer two trim levels each, with varying standard and optional features. 2024 Lexus IS F SPORT Performance Premium 4dr Sedan (5.0L 8cyl 8A)
Just purchased a 2024 IS500 vector blue as soon as I saw it at the dealer. Happy to pay MSRP as this will be a classic. The car is fast and fun to drive and unlike a hard core M3 or AMG it is actually very comfortable as a daily driver, and that V8 sound is SPECTACULAR! This is probably the best looking sports sedan in the market. Some reviews complain about a dated interior, however I … find it comfortable and very high quality, in fact that is one of the reasons Lexus and Toyotas are so reliable, they are not constantly making drastic changes every year but constantly improving on what is already a top notch fit and finish. If you live in an area with winter snow and ice this might not be a good year round car and the only other possible issue is the rear seat is tight so if you transport big and tall people keep the ride short.

2024 Lexus IS 500 F SPORT Performance Premium 4dr Sedan (5.0L 8cyl 8A)
I wanted to buy the vanilla IS 500 F-Sport, but they only had the Premium model available, so I bought it. I'm very happy I got the Premium instead, as it adds some nice details and features I didn't know I needed such as the LED lights and 17 speaker stereo! This is the only car in this class that has a V8, and it roars when you put your foot in it! In Sport S+ mode, the car turns … into a rocket sled when you get in the ~5,000 rpm range. Redline is 7,300 rpms which is impressive for a V8. However, my wife can put around happily as well in "normal" mode. The car is very comfortable, rides nice, and looks sexy. Some reviews complain about lack of cargo space, but this is not an SUV and it has plenty of room when you fold down the back seats. Don't settle for the IS 350, as it has 150+ less horse power, and only weighs about 150 lbs. less than the IS 500. The two body styles and interior are identical except there is an extra bump on the hood to accommodate the slightly larger V8 engine. In 6 months driving in Southern California, I have only seen one other on the road, so the IS 500 is rather rare, which is what a gem like this should be. I will be happily driving my Lexus IS500 F-Sport Premium for many years and get many compliments from friends and strangers regarding the car.

Compare the Lexus IS
Lexus IS vs. Mercedes-Benz C-Class
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is one of the newest sedans in the class, and its 2022 redesign shows how much engineering and technology have advanced when compared to the aging Lexus IS. The C-Class' base four-cylinder outperforms the IS 350's V6 and also beats the IS 300's fuel economy estimates. The C-Class further benefits from a more luxurious interior and one of the best infotainment systems in the industry.
Lexus IS vs. Audi A4
The Audi A4 is priced similarly to the Lexus IS but surpasses it in a number of ways. The A4's base engine is competitive with the IS 350's performance and also gets better fuel economy than the IS 300. The A4 continues to pull ahead with rear seats that can accommodate adults, more modern electronics, and an optimal balance of luxury and performance that lands between Mercedes and BMW.
Lexus IS vs. BMW 3 Series
BMW essentially invented the compact luxury sport sedan with the 3 Series decades ago. In this class, it remains one of the more performance-oriented choices with sharp handling and plenty of driver engagement. It has a firmer ride quality than rivals, though, which may be a concern if comfort is one of your priorities, and the price tends to climb quickly with options.
