The Stelvio stands taller and is cloaked in SUV bodywork, but it rides on the same basic architecture as Alfa Romeo's superb Giulia. The platform that underpins one of the most engaging sport sedans on the market translates to an uncommonly fun compact SUV. As Alfa prepares a new generation of the Stelvio, reportedly set to debut midway through 2025, it has trimmed the current offerings. The Quadrifoglio, with its 505-hp twin-turbo V6, is gone for this year, but the standard turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder remains one of the stoutest and most characterful engines in the class.

If you shopped for a Stelvio last year, the lineup looks very different for 2025. The Stelvio is down from five trim levels to just two. Most of the equipment that used to differentiate the trims is now available as packages on the base vehicle. That base Stelvio provides more standard features this year, including all-wheel drive — the rear-wheel-drive Stelvio joins the Quadrifoglio in the history books. We'll get into the details of the pricier Tributo Italiano below, but if you don't like the colors of the Italian flag, it's probably not for you.

Competitors to consider

Shoppers looking for a small luxury SUV have a paralyzing diversity of choices. Two of our favorites are the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. Both highlight the Alfa's age, with the Audi fully redesigned for 2025 and the Mercedes all-new for 2023. They offer fresher interior styling and technology as well as more upscale materials. We haven't driven the new Audi yet, but we doubt that it is as enjoyable to drive as the Stelvio. Nothing else in the class is.

Which Stelvio does Edmunds recommend?

If you want a Stelvio in a color other than green, white or red, you'll have to go with the base model — which is fine because the simplified trim lineup means you can spec out your ideal vehicle with option packages. The Active Driver Assist pack is a no-brainer, including a battery of advanced safety tech for just $700. Adding the Veloce package nets critical performance bits while keeping the price thousands less than the Tributo Italiano's sticker.

2021 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti Sport 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

As I was reading through reviews on your site, it bothered me to see only 3 stars for this car’s review. I have owned this car since February ‘21 now and it’s been fun to own and drive vs my 2019 BMW X3. Both cars are similar in a sense that Alfa is the old BMW. It’s more exciting to drive and significantly faster.
