Based on the A6 sedan, the Audi A7 features a dramatically tapered roof and a large liftback that reveals a roomy 24.6-cubic-foot cargo area. The 2024 Audi S7 is a sport-tuned version of the A7 but isn't quite as thrilling to drive as the more powerful, performance-oriented Audi RS 7. For 2024, Audi alters the S7's front styling, offers a new wheel design, adds fresh paint colors, and installs improved cabin lighting in most versions of the car. Remote engine start via smartphone app is now available too.

Edmunds spotlight: The Audi S7's upgrades compared to the A7

Compared to the A7, Audi charges a substantial premium for the S7. The added cash outlay buys a more powerful turbocharged V6 engine, a sport-tuned adaptive air suspension, larger front and rear brakes, and bigger 21-inch wheels wrapped in summer performance tires. Audi also offers additional performance upgrades that you can't get on the A7, including a sport exhaust system, four-wheel steering, and a rear differential that provides a torque-vectoring effect when driving the Audi S7 with enthusiasm. You can swap the air suspension out for a stiffer, performance-tuned traditional setup if that's your preference. Inside, audiophiles will enjoy the available high-end audio system offering greater fidelity and more speakers than they'll find in the A7.

Competitors to consider

If you are willing to drive an EV then the Tesla Model S is a worthy rival. The Model S matches the S7's swoopy sedan/hatchback body style to offer unexpected utility, and the electric Tesla smokes the Audi in straight-line acceleration. At the upper end of the S7 price range, it's not a big leap to a Mercedes-AMG GT (the sedan version) or a Porsche Panamera. Alternatively, you could save a big chunk of change by choosing a Volvo V60 Recharge. Tuned by Polestar Engineered, this plug-in hybrid sport wagon keeps pace with the Audi and offers about 40 miles of electric-only range before its turbocharged gas engine fires up.

Performance

How does the S7 drive? Despite the S in its name, the S7 isn't as sporty as you might imagine. At our test track, it sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and stopped from 60 mph in 110 feet. These are decent numbers but far from exceptional. That said, the way the S7 discreetly puts down the power should not go unmentioned — it has a sleeper vibe that suits its more modest exterior appearance.

Another highlight is how smooth the entire experience is. The transmission engages without fuss when pulling away from a stop, and the brakes make it easy to get just the right amount of slowing. So even though it isn't a rocket ship or a handling all-star, the S7 proves to be enjoyable throughout the day-to-day grind. It's a relaxing, well-rounded daily driver — whether you want that from your sport sedan, however, is entirely up to you.

Comfort

7.5/10

How comfortable is the S7? Though the S7 is more performance-oriented than the standard A7, comfort is a real strength. It's quiet and well behaved over every kind of pavement and allows no errant noises or rattles into the cabin at any time. The only fault we found with the S7 was occasional instability over a rough road surface that caused the rear of the car to become unsettled.

The S7 we tested was equipped with the available upgraded comfort seats, and it's clear this is the wrong choice. Not only are they not as comfortable as the sport seats that come as standard, the leather they're covered in doesn't feel as supple to the touch. Though they're heated and ventilated, and the standard buckets are only heated, we'd happily give that up for just how much more comfortable and supportive the sport buckets are.

Our biggest complaint when it comes to comfort: The climate system fans are too weak. It was very hot during some of the days we evaluated the S7, and not once did we feel the AC was strong enough to cool us down properly.

Interior

8/10

How’s the interior? The S7's interior is aging well, but it is one of the oldest interiors in the segment. The highs are that it's roomy and offers excellent visibility and the driving position can be tailored to suit a wide variety of drivers.

The lows come down to the user interface. All controls, even the climate control, are split between two similarly sized touchscreens. We much prefer having physical controls for the climate system, but the dedicated screen for the climate does at least provide haptic feedback. The S7 is lower than the average luxury sedan, and though the doors are large, some might find it difficult to get in and out of — even if the air suspension quickly lifts the car during entry and exit.

How’s the tech? Audi's in-car tech features all the bells and whistles you might expect from a modern luxury automobile, though many of the higher-end features are optional rather than standard. When equipped, the systems work well, though the interface takes a little while to figure out.

The Bang & Olufsen audio system, which is typically fantastic, was a bit of a letdown this time. The bass never felt deep enough and it rattled the door pockets in a way a car this expensive should never do. Thankfully, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make it easy to play music from your phone. Our test car had four USB-C ports too, and the S7's wireless charging pad doubles as a signal booster.

The driver aids work well, with no false readings or needless corrections. The adaptive cruise control maintained a close but reasonable gap in traffic.

Storage

8/10

How’s the storage? Storage is one of the S7's interesting high points. Because of the liftgate, the cargo area opens wide and is frankly huge for the segment. The 24.6 cubic feet of trunk space rivals the cargo areas of some small SUVs, and in actual use, you'll find you can fold down the rear seats to make the space even larger. A low liftover height means heavy items require less effort to load too.

In the cabin, there doesn't seem to be any good place to put a pair of sunglasses that doesn't block a cupholder. The shallow center console is mostly taken up by the wireless charging spot. The rear offers plenty of space for child seats, with easy-to-access anchors on the outboard seats.

How’s the fuel economy? The S7 gets an EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined. That's typical fuel economy for a midsize luxury sedan with a six-cylinder engine. Our test S7 equaled the EPA's estimates during our testing, so it's fair to assume they're realistic.

Is the S7 a good value? As you'd expect, the S7 is not an inexpensive proposition. But everything about the S7 suggests sophisticated luxury. The interior design is clean, modern and unfussy. Even the piano black plastic trim, which is typically something we don't like, doesn't look cheap or plasticky. Fit and finish is excellent, and the S7 feels every bit as good as or better than a BMW or Mercedes-Benz. Warranty coverage is standard, but while Audi provides four years/unlimited miles of roadside assistance, it does not offer free maintenance like some of its competitors.

With its conservative looks and solid performance capabilities, the Audi S7 is the quintessential sleeper. The S7 is great for long-distance cruising, packs a fantastic interior, and is generally lovely to behold. Its sloping roofline and low-slung looks only add to its presence. Sure, it might not look different enough from a regular A7 to stand out, but in a world where shock value has seemingly replaced good design, the S7 stands out as one of the best-looking, most well-composed sedans on the market right now.
