Overview
In an SUV-crazed world, few brands can afford not to offer one. The Bentayga, the first of the modern über-luxe SUVs, is more than just a marketing feint. Built from hardware shared with the Porsche Cayenne, the Bentayga offers all the power, comfort, lavish trimmings, and endless personalization options buyers expect of a Bentley. And with the standard height-adjustable air suspension raised to its highest setting, its driver can literally look down on those around them.
Edmunds spotlight: Differences between the V8 and V6 PHEV
Even with its standard turbocharged V6 plug-in hybrid powertrain (456 horsepower, 516 lb-ft of torque), the Bentayga is faster than any vehicle this big needs to be. The optional twin-turbocharged V8 (542 horsepower, 568 lb-ft of torque) makes it even more outrageous while expanding the Bentayga's options list. Bentley's trick Dynamic Ride suspension, which uses electric motors to minimize body roll and includes rear-wheel steering; a factory-installed trailer hitch receiver; and the Terrain Specification, which includes underbody protection and off-road driving modes, are only available on V8 Bentaygas.
Competitors to consider
Ettore Bugatti, founder of the eponymous brand, is said to have once called a Bentley "the fastest lorry in the world." ("Lorries" are what Brits call trucks.) The remark was meant to slander his rival's race car, but today there is plenty of competition for that title. Edmunds does not test top speed, but honors likely go to the Ferrari Purosangue or Lamborghini Urus. Aston Martin's DBX is in the running, as is the Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid. Shoppers less interested in speed and more concerned with luxury will find the Rolls-Royce Cullinan a compelling alternative to the Bentley.
Edmunds Expert Rating
Performance
Multimode terrain settings and an air suspension enable commendable off-road performance. With no limited-slip differentials, it's the braking system and the air suspension that get the Bentayga where it needs to go. The on-road tires are also a limiting factor.
Comfort
No matter the Bentayga's speed, very little road or wind noise is allowed to enter the cabin. But the 22-inch wheel and tire package did somewhat compromise the ride on less than perfect surfaces. The somewhat plain-looking and somewhat flat rear bench seat is also a blemish, although it can be optioned with heating and ventilation for the outboard seats or replaced with more luxurious captain's chairs.
Interior
Drivers can get comfortable immediately, and the multitude of seat adjustments allow for detailed fine-tuning for the perfect position. The infotainment system and center console layout have done wonders for the Bentayga's interior. It's now fully modern but has a hint of traditional luxury. Rear passengers have plenty of legroom and headroom.
Technology
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work over a wireless connection. USB ports exist for front and backseat passengers, and the wireless charging pad offers plenty of room for larger phones. Most of the Bentayga's driver aids are well calibrated with the exception of the hands-free lane keeping assistance. It's a bit clumsy in its operation and can bounce the Bentayga around between lane markers.
Storage
Fuel Economy
Value
Service and customer care are beyond what most car buyers will ever know, but you will pay for that privilege. Every part of the Bentayga is covered under a three-year/unlimited mileage warranty; that goes for the traditional bumper-to-bumper warranty and powertrain components as well.
Wildcard
Despite your best efforts at restraint, you'll wind up flexing all that power and having moments of warp speed just because you can. You can even chuck the Bentayga around with some abandon. Physics will eventually catch up with you, but not many other motorists will.
Which Bentayga does Edmunds recommend?
The pricier trim levels are largely just bundles of preselected options with others locked out, so we'd go with the base Bentayga. That would leave us to spec out exactly the Bentley we want. No matter the trim, though, the V8 is the way to go since the brilliant Dynamic Ride suspension is not available with the plug-in hybrid V6.
