The 2024 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is a pleasing niche offering in the BMW lineup. Though its looks aren't for everyone, the Gran Coupe does boast sporty performance, a comfortable ride and above-average practicality. As a more stylish alternative to a 3 Series, we think it's worth a look.Read full review

Overview

12/14/2023
The 4 Series Gran Coupe is a BMW sedan for those who don't want a stodgy, humdrum four-door. A sort of mishmash of the 3 Series sedan and the 4 Series coupe, the Gran Coupe has four doors but a tapering coupe-like roofline. It's also a hatchback with fold-down split rear seats, which further enhance utility relative to a conventional sedan. Function and fashion — imagine that. For 2024, BMW updated the 4 Series' interior with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a larger 14.9-inch center touchscreen housed behind a single curved display.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2024 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe 430i 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.49 per gallon for premium unleaded in Texas.
When it was introduced for 2022, the 4 Series Gran Coupe was available with only two powertrain combinations: a four-cylinder engine with rear-wheel drive or a six-cylinder engine with all-wheel drive. Partway through the 2023 model year, BMW made rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive available with both engines, accommodating a wider swath of potential buyers and transforming the 4 Series Gran Coupe into one of the most versatile and well-equipped four-door luxury cars available.
Competitors to consider
The Audi A5 Sportback (and sportier S5 Sportback) is a four-door luxury hatchback that's similar in concept to the 4 Series Gran Coupe and worth checking out. Otherwise, you'll likely end up cross-shopping against traditional luxury sedans such as the Acura TLX, BMW 3 Series, Genesis G70, Lexus IS and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Check out our test team's Expert Rating below for our complete test of the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

Good
7.8
out of 10

Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year. The Edmunds Vehicle Testing Team evaluates a fresh batch of vehicles every week, pairing objective assessments at our test track with real-world driving on city streets, freeways and winding roads. Performance
8/10
How does the 4 Series Gran Coupe drive? We tested the 430i version, which is the base version of the 4 Series Gran Coupe. At our test track, it sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, which is an average time for a small luxury car with a base engine. For more fun and personality, you should definitely get the six-cylinder engine. Otherwise, the transmission shifts smoothly and quickly, and pulling away from stops and driving at low speed is comfortable and easy. Around turns, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is stable and secure. Emergency braking power is also impressive, but the brakes are grabby at low speeds and require a delicate foot to slow smoothly.
Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the 4 Series Gran Coupe? Despite looking like a low-slung sport sedan, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is surprisingly comfortable. The optional adaptive suspension dampers help the car ride comfortably in all drive modes, especially Comfort mode. It's also quiet and does a commendable job of insulating passengers from the outside world. The seats have firm padding, suggesting the seats will require a lengthy break-in period before they become truly comfortable, but multiple adjustments allow you to find an ideal sitting position.
Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The 4 Series Gran Coupe's cabin is a pleasant place to spend a lot of time. The driving position, as you might expect from a sport sedan, is great. You sit low down in the car and the seats, while firm, are supportive. Even the back seats, which passengers might expect to be cramped, are roomy enough. A 6-foot-tall passenger can sit behind a 6-foot-tall driver and still have knee room to spare. The biggest gripe we have with the 4 Series Gran Coupe is its coupe-like visibility. The side mirror blocks much of the view out of the driver's side window, and the car's blind spots are large.

How’s the tech? The massive central touchscreen looks great, and the interface is so intuitive that the traditional iDrive knob down by the shifter seems almost superfluous. If you'd rather let your phone take over that screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto perform flawlessly. Our test car also lacked the upgraded upgraded Harman Kardon audio system, though the standard audio system is strong enough that it wasn't a huge loss.
Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The Gran Coupe features a roomy liftback cargo area instead of a typical trunk. The liftgate opens wide, so the opening itself is akin to a giant mouth, swallowing everything in its path. It's far easier than packing a trunk. Storage for small items is less impressive. There are the requisite cupholders in the center console, though they can't fit larger bottles. The door pockets are quite small, and the glovebox and armrest storage are also smaller than we'd like. Got small children? The rear seating is roomy and has easily accessible anchor points to help with safety seat installation, though getting a bulky seat through the small rear door openings can be a pain.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? We tested the 430i, which gets an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That's respectably fuel-efficient for a small luxury sedan. On our standardized test route, the 4 Series Gran Coupe just beat the EPA's estimate, giving us 28.9 mpg. Overall, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is pretty efficient for a luxury car.
Value
7.5/10
Is the 4 Series Gran Coupe a good value? The 4 Series Gran Coupe can get pricey but its mix of practicality, everyday comfort, and excellent build quality almost justifies its price. It's better to drive than the standard 3 Series and offers more storage space that makes it an even better daily commuter. BMW's warranty on the 4 Series Gran Coupe is solid, with standard and drivetrain warranties stretching for four years/50,000 miles.
Wildcard
8/10
The 4 Series is either extremely interesting or awful to look at depending on your personal tastes. That said, there's little doubt this BMW presents a distinct form on today's roads. Taste is subjective, but the 4 Series is certainly different, and BMW should get credit for that. We wish the 430i's engine was more powerful, so those seeking fun-to-drive thrills in this body style really need to consider the more powerful M440i model. That said, 430i owners won't feel snubbed, and the 4 Series is certainly more fun than the regular 330i sedan.
Which 4 Series Gran Coupe does Edmunds recommend?
We think the 430i provides the best value in the 4 Series Gran Coupe lineup. Adding all-wheel drive is an option on this base trim now, too, which will satisfy buyers in colder, wetter climates. Among the available options, the Convenience package and Driving Assistance Professional package are well worth getting.
2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe 430i 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
I took delivery on my 2022 Gran Coupe yesterday. First of all, this is a very difficult car to find. There is basically nothing in stock and most cars coming in are spoken for before they get to the dealer. I was fortunate to find one that arrived at the dealer that wasn’t pre-sold. I love this car. The new BMW technology is very intuitive and much better than the former system. The … double LCD screens with the totally electronic gauges is a game changer. The infotainment screens are easily accessible and simple to figure out. The acceleration on this car is excellent. It is QUICK. I was very impressed with the acceleration and handling in the Comfort mode. The ride is quiet, great feel for the road, comfortable and responsive. Standard blind spot monitor, back-up camera and parking assist technology is wonderful. The basic car comes loaded with a laundry list of standard features. There are some excellent options to choose from to customize this car to your needs and desires. The exterior styling of this car is stunning as is the interior. The ambient lighting and cabin layout is comfortable and functional plus luxurious. The hatchback provides a spacious cargo area with rear seats that completely fold down for extra space. What a great feature. I believe that the MSRP pricing on this car is very reasonable for the value. The twin turbo 4 cylinder engine is quite impressive. If you want a luxurious sports car with some added cargo space, this 2022 Gran Coupe will impress you.

2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe M440i xDrive 4dr Sedan AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
My fourth BMW, including two SUV's and one sedan, and the best thus far The M440 version I have is a pleasure: eye catching, unique design that looks like nothing else on the road. Classic BMW handling, braking, seating, etc. This car gets up and moves: put it in Sport Plus, hit the paddles, and hang on [while keeping an eye in the rear view mirror....] Makes a drive to the grocery … store or three hours on the interstate equally a pleasure. Highly recommended: well done, Munich!

2023 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe M440i xDrive 4dr Sedan AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
Tons of power but efficient, comfortable and sporty. The grille has been mentioned a lot. Personally I like it. The car is about 190 inches long to begin with. I receive a lot of positive comments. Quality of materials and build quality is a big positive. The Germans really know how to build vehicles. The inline 6 turbo and 8 speed ZF transmission is one of the smoothest … drivetrains out there. 32-35mpg cruising at 70-80mph. We carried a folding table and 4 plastic chairs for 250 mile trip once.
