The BMW X3 is a compact luxury SUV that slots between the smaller X1 and larger X5 in BMW's lineup. But don't think the X3 is too small for you — it's actually longer than the original X5 from the turn of the millennium. At the same time, while it's spacious, the X3 exhibits the athleticism we've come to expect from the German automaker. Since it was redesigned just year, we don't believe there will be major changes when the 2026 BMW X3 rolls off its South Carolina assembly line.
Edmunds spotlight: A taste of what's to come
In some ways, this latest BMW X3 is in a bit of a holding pattern. It's an internal combustion engine vehicle in a world that seems destined for electrification, and with so many resources going toward that next chapter, it seems unlikely that we'll get a range-topping sport-focused X3 M anytime soon. Unlike past X3s, this generation also goes without a rear-wheel-drive model in order to streamline the production process. Though the X3 has a foot planted in the past, it also points to the future. Styling-wise, the X3 gives us a glimpse at what's coming next, with distinctively creased and folded body elements that make it a standout among the more conventional Mercedes and Audi rivals. The BMW iX3 is the X3's upcoming all-electric equivalent, and it's set to go on sale next year. The design borrows heavily from the X3, though thankfully its grille isn't nearly as massive as those on other all-electric Bimmers. For now, the X3 remains a great pick with plenty of traditional driving fun without any range anxiety.
Competitors to consider
We have yet to fully evaluate this BMW X3 generation, but after piloting four-cylinder 30 xDrive and six-cylinder M50 xDrive models on a lengthy drive route, we believe it will rank highly in the compact luxury SUV class. We currently name the Genesis GV70 as our class favorite thanks to its standout value proposition and overall excellence, though some interior details fall short of the standards set by German manufacturers. The Mercedes-Benz GLC flips the script by offering an impeccably appointed cabin, though it'll cost you more than the Genesis to get fewer features. A new Audi Q5 is also on the horizon, which will certainly give the X3 a run for its money. Check back for our expert ratings of both of these redesigned crossovers.
