Great car, if it doesn’t die on you

1st BMW for us. X5 50e. Great, loved the car. 3 months after purchase, 3003 miles, suffered “drivetrain malfunction” while going over the Grapevine in California. Towed to dealership in SoCal where the car sits to this day. Day 32 now. Service advisor said “Germany is making all the decisions”. Took 3 wks to figure out what is wrong. Need to replace the high voltage battery and some battery control module or something. No ETA on when parts will be available for repairs. No end in sight. BMW North America - talk about NOT being helpful! First and LAST BMW for this family. I’ve driven Hondas all my life, all my kids now drive Hondas… BMW lost a repeat customer for the next 30 yrs because of the poor service, not the crappy lemon they sold me. Was more than willing to give them a second/third chance, but not with poor customer service I experienced. Starting process to have BMW buy it back and get my money back. We’ll see how that goes…

A brand new car that died on me after 157 miles…

I acquired a new X5 50e with 8 miles on it. After roughly 160 miles of easy driving, the car simply died. I came one morning to find it in my garage with a severe drivetrain malfunction message that prevents the engine to turn on (cannot engage the transmission in drive mode). More malfunction messages kept on coming afterwards as well. The car got towed to the dealership and I have no ETA for the repairs, after they had the opportunity to work on it for a full work day. I am. It even sure that the diagnosis is understood. Not what you expect from a new vehicle from any car manufacturer. I don’t have a car right now and the best bmw has offered me so far is to pay for my Uber rides, up to a clip. The dealer does not have any loaners. If you plan on purchasing this, you have been warned :) UPDATE: This is an update to a review I wrote 20 days ago. My new x5 50e with roughly 160 miles on it had a component failure (combined charging unit). To make matter worse, I did not have a good experience with the support from the bmw. I had to escalate emails to get them to do something about this. While they finally got back to me to help out with a compensation, they also told me that the component that needs to be replaced would finally be delivered this past week to the dealership. Please also note that I was told by the dealership that the part in question is back ordered from Germany and also undergoing some type of design upgrade. The part has yet to be delivered; not even clear of it has been shipped according to my last conversation with the dealership yesterday. 10 days ago both bmw North America and the dealer told me that it was on its way and to expect the car towards the end of this past week; but now, the dealership has changed its tune (they do not know when the part is coming in saying that there is no way to track it) and my contact at bmw customer service is not picking up my calls nor returning my emails (hopefully just on vacation but I doubt it). I am still waiting with absolutely no ETA for this. It could be next week, it could be another couple of weeks? No idea. While the dealership refused to give me loaner (some strange policy they have for customers in situation) or replacement vehicle, they were able authorized a rental car under their name (Nissan murano that I had to change recently for a Hyundai hybrid suv as it was not properly serviced). So that’s my story 😞. Owning this x5 50e has just been a complete nightmare.

Not ready for prime time!

Took delivery of my 2024 X5 50E last August and have had nothing but trouble since. Total system malfunction leaving me stranded for hours waiting for a tow, multiple software failures, steering column shuddering so hard when retracting it sounds like it is stuck, uncomfortable seats, etc. This is my third X5 and it is DEFINITELY MY LAST! My family can't believe I haven't dumped this piece of junk.

Smooth and Fast

I've had my X5 50e for 2 weeks now and it is just so smooth, quiet, quick, and comfortable. Love all of the tech and after some time spent getting myself familiar with all of the tech I am now very comfortable just getting in and driving. I shopped it against the GLE 450e and the Range Rover Sport PHEV. If you know what to look for when looking at vehicles to compare build quality, it is just simply built better than the MB GLE450e, plus you get the rock solid BMW inline 6. The Range Rover Sport PHEV is well built, but doesn't feel as planted and is not as enjoyable to drive... plus you would pay a great deal more $ for questionable reliability. I don't buy cars for show. I mostly use electric driving around town and it's wonderful. If I want to punch it, the power is immediate and just downright fun. I love this SUV! I am very happy with this X5 50e. It puts a smile on my face every time I'm behind the wheel. My wife also enjoys the comfort of the multi-contour seats and the massage feature, so bonus that my wife loves it too. Right now I've averaged over 90MPG and the ability to drive around town on electric power and still have the use of the hybrid/ICE for longer trips without waiting around 30-40 minutes to refuel like a full EV is the sweet spot for me. I'll be happy to go full EV in the future when the charging infrastructure is better built out and battery technology has improved. The only con I would have for the X5 is less than desirable backseat legroom. It's not something that affects me, but being 6'1" when the driver's seat is in the most comfortable position for me another 6 footer behind me could use a couple more inches of legroom.

Don't buy BMW X5 50e

There is a manufacture defect on X5 50e. Search online for checking engine light or CCU replacement. There are lots of frustrated owners. I wish I had known that before I bought the car. BMW doesn't know how to fix the problem and your brand new X5 50e will likely be at the dealer's repair shop for a long time.
