2014 Honda Civic LX Recalled for Possible Tire Damage

WASHINGTON — American Honda Motor Co. is recalling 9,817 2014 Honda Civic LX cars in the U.S. because of possible tire damage, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"In the affected vehicles, during mounting of the tires, the tire bead may have gotten pinched between the assembly equipment and the steel wheel rims, resulting in damage to the tire," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "The tire damage could cause the tire to lose air, increasing the risk of a crash."

As of February 28, Honda told federal safety regulators it had not received any warranty claims, field reports or injuries related to the recall.

The affected Civics were built from November 26, 2013 through January 21, 2014.

Honda said the problem was discovered during factory quality checks. A company inspection of 4,696 15-inch tires on steel wheels found 1,886 tires with a tear in the bead, according to a document filed with the federal government. A total of 119 16-inch tires on steel wheels out of 1,150 inspected were also found to have a torn bead.

Honda dealers will check the tires. If an original tire is found to have a torn bead, the tire will be replaced for free. Owners can contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009.
