2015 Subaru Legacy and Outback To Offer Improved EyeSight System

CHERRY HILL, New Jersey — The 2015 Subaru Legacy and Outback will be among the Subaru models to offer the improved version of the automaker's EyeSight driver assistance system.

The system helps the driver to avoid crashes.

The improved system gets color cameras with a longer and wider detection range for spotting obstacles and brake-light detection. Subaru said the system can now function when the speed differential between the EyeSight-equipped car and another vehicle is up to 30 mph. Before, it operated when the speed differential was 19 mph.

The system uses a pair of cameras mounted near the rearview mirror that provide safety features including adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking and lane-departure warning.

Pricing on the new EyeSight system has not been announced.

Subaru said the technology will roll out on more Subaru models, but Michael McHale, a company spokesman, told Edmunds that he could "only say it's coming to Legacy and Outback at this point."

The original system is available on certain Forester, Legacy and Outback models. It is available on the 2013 Subaru Legacy as part of a $3,940 package that also bundles a moonroof and a navigation system. It is available on the 2014 Subaru Forester as part of a $2,400 package that bundles keyless access and start, along with high-intensity-discharge headlights.

Subaru said it also plans to launch three more safety technologies for the 2015 model year.

They are blind-spot detection, lane-change assist and rear cross-traffic alert. The automaker has not announced launch timing, pricing or which models will feature the new safety technologies.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers should be aware that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave Subaru's EyeSight system its highest rating when the IIHS conducted its first test of accident-avoidance technology last year.
