Hertz Dream Car Program Features Lamborghinis, Ferraris for $1,500 a Day

PARK RIDGE, New Jersey — If you've dreamed of getting behind the wheel of a supercar but don't have a Donald Trump portfolio to back up that kind of purchase, the new Hertz Dream Car program features rentals of Lamborghinis and Ferraris starting at $1,500 a day.

Hertz already serves the performance market with its Adrenalin Collection, which includes some interesting models like the Chevrolet Corvette, Camaro SS and Ford Mustang GT. But the new Dream Car assortment kicks it up a notch with high-dollar options such as the Aston Martin Vantage, Audi R8, Ferrari F430, Lamborghini Gallardo, Porsche 911, Bentley Continental GT and SRT Viper. The Tesla Model S is included in the Dream Car list.

Not surprisingly, dipping a toe in this exclusive pool, even for a day, entails more than a slight upgrade from the cost of renting a Ford Focus. At the low end of the scale, prices for a Porsche Boxster start at $395 per day, with 75 free miles and 49 cents for each additional mile.

In the middle of the pack, cars like the Vantage or R8 will go for around $1,000 per day, with added miles coming at $3 per. And sliding into a Ferrari or Lamborghini raises the rental fee to $1,500 per day or more, with a charge of $3 for each additional mile.

But, as Hertz Chairman and CEO Mark P. Frissora pointed out in a statement, customers are not just getting a car. He said: "The Dream Cars experience extends from special reservation channels to being greeted by a Hertz representative at the airport terminal, to a rental vehicle in pristine condition. We ensure the travel experience with a Hertz Dream Car will be unforgettable."

The company plans to introduce the service to 35 markets in the U.S., including Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Diego.

Renting high-performance vehicles is not new for Hertz. In the 1960s, the company introduced its infamous Rent-a-Racer program, which included the now-legendary 1966 Ford Shelby Mustang GT-350H ("H" for Hertz, of course). Around 1,000 of these cars were built, all in black and gold, with special touches devised by Carroll Shelby himself. They could be rented from select Hertz locations for $17 per day and 17 cents per mile. Today, collectors fight over the Hertz Mustangs, even at six-figure prices.
