Honda Fit EV, Insight Discontinued

TORRANCE, California — The Honda Fit EV and Honda Insight have been discontinued, an American Honda spokesman told Edmunds on Tuesday.

The Insight will be available at Honda dealerships nationwide through the end of the year, with production scheduled to end this summer.

Honda will produce the Fit EV until later this fall and will continue to support customers through their lease period.

The automaker had committed only to making 1,100 Fit EVs for the U.S.

"Our path forward includes a new generation of electromotive technologies, including expanded application of our two-motor hybrid system," wrote Sage Marie, a Honda spokesman, in response to a query from Edmunds.

The two-motor system was introduced on the 2014 Honda Accord plug-in hybrid and powers the Honda Accord Hybrid.

Honda is expected to make an announcement about the future of the Honda FCX Clarity fuel-cell vehicle in the coming weeks.

The Honda FCEV concept that debuted at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show provided clues to the direction that Honda will take with the FCX Clarity's successor.

The Honda Insight competes with the Ford Fusion Hybrid, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Toyota Camry Hybrid and Toyota Prius.

The Honda Fit EV competes with the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt.
