In an upset of sorts, Hyundai's redesigned and highly regarded Tucson beat the Honda CR-V by a whisker for 1st place. Had we not carried our votes to a tenth of a decimal place, this would've been a tie, as the Tucson's victory was by the slimmest of margins -- 18.1 percent against the Honda's 17.9 percent. At a relatively distant 3rd place was the Volkswagen Tiguan, with 10.4 percent.

What Edmunds.com says:
The 2010 Hyundai Tucson may not be as big as its main rivals, but it makes amends with a handsome cabin, an ample features list, sporty handling and a low price. It's a top pick for a small crossover.

2. Honda CR-V
What Edmunds.com says:
The 2010 Honda CR-V remains one of our favorite compact crossover SUVs. More power this year should help with its traditionally sluggish performance; however, the absence of an optional engine upgrade continues to be an Achilles heel.
What Edmunds.com says:
The 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan trades some practicality for a top-notch cabin and European driving manners. It's a different flavor in a vanilla class.
What Edmunds.com says:
More grown up in both size and character than past iterations, the 2010 Subaru Forester is a top pick in the highly competitive small SUV segment..

5. Ford Escape
What Edmunds.com says:
A slew of innovative high-tech features make the 2010 Ford Escape a tempting choice in the compact crossover category. But this model is showing its advanced age and most competitors are ultimately more appealing.

6. GMC Terrain
What Edmunds.com says:
The 2010 GMC Terrain is an eye-catching and capable crossover SUV that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as segment stars like the RAV4 and CR-V.

7. Toyota RAV4
What Edmunds.com says:
Spacious, comfortable and easy to drive, the 2010 Toyota RAV4 is a top pick for a small-to-midsize crossover SUV, especially if you want a V6 or a usable kid-size third-row seat.
What Edmunds.com says:
For young families who aren't willing to compromise style for versatility, the 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander is a very good choice for a small crossover SUV.

9. Kia Sportage
What Edmunds.com says:
Though outclassed in many ways by more refined competitors, the 2010 Kia Sportage remains a solid choice for buyers in search of an affordable compact crossover.

10. Jeep Compass
What Edmunds.com says:
Despite its low price and unique flip-down tailgate speakers, the 2010 Jeep Compass ranks as one of the least attractive choices in the compact-SUV segment.
What Edmunds.com says:
Though it's outclassed in many areas, the 2010 Suzuki Grand Vitara still represents an interesting alternative to other compact SUVs, especially if you're on a tight budget.
