Overview

If you need a full-size commercial van on a budget and can live without modern amenities like a touchscreen infotainment system, the 2025 Chevrolet Express Cargo might be a good fit. The Express, along with its GMC Savana twin, is among the oldest vehicles on the market — its last redesign was in 1996. As such, it has noticeably less advanced underpinnings than its competitors. In spite of this, the Express Cargo is a capable workhorse with a high max towing capacity and cavernous interior that can be easily configured for a number of different trades. Perhaps most attractive of all for fleet operators, the Express Cargo undercuts its more modern competitors by thousands of dollars.
Edmunds spotlight: Impressive towing and payload numbers
The Express Cargo might be pushing 30 years old now, but it can still haul with the best of them. When equipped with the available 6.6-liter V8 making 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque, the Express Cargo can tow up to 10,000 pounds. With the base 276-hp 4.3-liter V6, that rating drops to 7,100-7,400 pounds, depending on configuration. Payload capacity is as much as 4,280 pounds for the 3500 model and 3,280 pounds for the 2500 model.
Competitors to consider
The Chevrolet Express and its GMC Savana sibling are the most dated offerings in the full-size commercial van category, which also includes the Ford Transit, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ram ProMaster. All three of those rivals will look and feel substantially more modern both inside and out thanks to their contemporary designs and available in-car technologies. You'll also probably notice a difference in how they drive because they have suspension and chassis components designed in this millennium. Additionally, the Express lacks a high-roof body style, something you can get on all three of its competitors.
