Pros
- Smooth, quiet ride
- Spacious rear seat and trunk
- Sleek cabin with lots of technology upgrades
- Capable optional V6
Cons
- Underwhelming performance and fuel economy from standard four-cylinder
- Some interior surfaces feel cheap
- Thick roof pillars hamper visibility
- Advanced collision prevention tech restricted to top trim level
What's new
- The Impala carries over unchanged for 2019
- Part of the 10th Impala generation introduced for 2014
Highlights of the 2019 Chevrolet Impala include its smooth ride, roomy interior with lots of space for rear-seat passengers, and one of the most massive trunks available in any sedan. Chevy has also updated the latest Impala generation over its life with newer infotainment and connectivity features. What the Impala has in spades, though, is that smooth large-car feeling on the road.

There aren't a ton of choices for affordable full-size sedans these days, but the king of this class is the Toyota Avalon, which was fully redesigned for 2019. Buyers who are looking to get the most features for their money might want to check out the Kia Cadenza. The Buick LaCrosse also offers a more luxurious and recently redesigned take on the full-size segment. Perhaps the more significant issue is that midsize sedans, such as the excellent new Honda Accord, rival the Impala for space and refinement at a much lower starting price.
Edmunds' Expert Rating
7.1 / 10The 2019 Chevrolet Impala is an aging large-car contender. It offers plenty of room and a quiet and comfortable ride. It also provides a robust set of infotainment and connectivity options, but not many advanced active safety features.
Trim tested
Each vehicle typically comes in multiple versions that are fundamentally similar. The ratings in this review are based on our full test of the Chevrolet Impala LTZ (3.6L V6 | 6-speed automatic | FWD).
NOTE: Since this test was conducted in 2014, the current Impala has received some revisions, including an overhaul of the infotainment system, the addition of more standard features, and changes to option packages. Our findings remain broadly applicable to this year's Impala, however.
Scorecard
Overall | 7.1 / 10 |
Driving | 7.0 |
Comfort | 7.5 |
Interior | 7.0 |
Utility | 9.0 |
Driving
7.0The 305-hp V6 in the Impala makes more power than competitors, but instrumented acceleration is average. Its 3,881-pound weight (a few hundred pounds more than the Avalon) may be to blame. Still, the Impala's V6 is smooth, strong and plenty capable.
Acceleration
7.5Shifts are smooth and quick. The Impala gets up to highway speeds quickly and passes with confidence. Still, our measured 0-60 mph time of 6.7 seconds is merely average for the class. The four-cylinder is noticeably slower.
Braking
7.0The pedal feel is slightly soft, but it's easy enough to modulate around town. A panic stop from 60 mph takes 120 feet, which is average for this class of vehicle.
Steering
7.0The steering effort and feedback are light but precise and trustworthy. But it's slightly sensitive around the center, so the driver still has to stay alert to prevent lane-wandering.
Handling
6.5Obedient but not entertaining. Around turns, the Impala will prove capable and confident enough for the majority of drivers.
Drivability
7.5Well-mannered and confidence-inspiring during day-to-day driving, the Impala is a willing and accommodating commuting partner. Light steering makes parking easy.
Comfort
7.5The Impala provides a pleasantly peaceful cabin that emphasizes comfort over performance. There's ample interior space. After hours of driving, we emerged no worse for the wear. Skipping the optional 20-inch wheels may further improve the ride.
Seat comfort
8.0The adequately padded front seats offer eight-way power adjustments. Side bolstering is minimal, and the optional ventilation is weak. The adult-friendly rear seats are only bested by those in the Avalon for legroom in the class.
Ride comfort
8.5The suspension smooths out rough surfaces and provides a terrific balance of comfort and composure. The Impala is also less floaty than some competitors.
Noise & vibration
8.5Wind and road noise is barely detectable over a variety of surfaces and speeds. The cabin's creak-free isolation approaches luxury-sedan levels.
Interior
7.0The Impala is competitive with other large sedans. The tasteful interior design is appealing, though there are still some disappointing plastics, particularly below the center stack.
Ease of use
6.5The majority of primary and secondary controls are well-placed and clearly labeled, but the touchscreen is a bit of a reach and at an upward angle.
Getting in/getting out
8.0The elevated seat height makes getting in and out easy, as does the tall door opening. There's no stooping required. The same holds true for the rear seats.
Roominess
8.5The Impala's spaciousness compares favorably with competitors, with plenty of headroom and legroom. The average-size adult will even be comfortable in the rear seat for all-day road trips.
Visibility
6.0The thick front roof pillars hamper visibility through turns, and the high rear trunklid requires reliance on the backup camera. The gauges and displays are placed well within sightlines.
Quality
7.0Flimsy plastic panels on the center console contribute to a lower-quality environment than those of competitors. But the MyLink system's menus are intuitive and straightforward.
Utility
9.0With the Taurus dead, the Impala now boasts the biggest trunk in the segment, positively huge at 18.8 cubic feet. Inside the cabin, bins are adequate and the behind-touchscreen storage is unique. Rear LATCH anchors are easy to find, and there's plenty of room, even for rear-facing car seats.
Technology
The current incarnation of Chevy's MyLink system is easy to use and offers lots of connectivity features, such as standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Accident avoidance tech is available, but only on the highest trim level — they're standard on every Avalon.
Which Impala does Edmunds recommend?
We recommend opting for the V6 since it dramatically improves the driving experience. While the LS is a bargain in this segment, we'd step up to the LT for its added features and access to more options. Specifically — considering the Impala's visibility issues — we'd add the Driver Confidence package for its parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

2019 Chevrolet Impala models
The 2019 Chevrolet Impala is a four-door, five-passenger sedan that's available in three trim levels. Thanks to equipment upgrades last year, the base LS trim is more than just bare-bones transportation. Moving up to the LT trim gets you upgraded interior materials and access to several option packages. The range-topping Premier trim offers an extensive and upscale list of standard features.
Two engines are available. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder (197 horsepower, 191 pound-feet of torque) is standard on the LS and LT trim levels, while a 3.6-liter six-cylinder (305 hp, 264 lb-ft of torque) is standard for the Premier and optional in the others. Both engines use a six-speed automatic transmission and are only available with front-wheel drive.
The LS trim starts with a good selection of standard features. You get 18-inch steel wheels, sound-insulating laminated windows, automatic headlights, cruise control, keyless entry and ignition, a rearview camera, air conditioning, an eight-way power driver's seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, 60/40-split folding rear seats, OnStar (includes 4G LTE and Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity), a six-speaker audio system, satellite radio, and Chevy's MyLink infotainment system that includes an 8-inch touchscreen interface, two USB ports, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Moving up to the LT adds 18-inch alloy wheels, remote engine start, heated mirrors, dual-zone climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, rear air vents, extra headrest adjustments, and a few other small interior trim upgrades.
The Impala LT also offers many upgrade packages. The Driver Confidence package includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors. The LT Entertainment package pads on navigation, an 11-speaker Bose stereo system, a CD player, ambient interior lighting and a 120-volt outlet. Want a sunroof and a rear spoiler? Order the Sunroof and Spoiler package.
There's also the LT Convenience package, which includes heated front seats and a heated steering wheel as well as an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Convenience package can be upgraded with the LT Leather package, which adds leather upholstery and a power-adjustable front passenger seat.
The top-trim Impala Premier gets 19-inch wheels, xenon headlights, heated power seats and leather upholstery, a wireless smartphone charging pad, and some unique exterior accents. It also includes the contents of the LT's Driver Confidence, Entertainment, and Sunroof and Spoiler packages.
Packages for the Premier trim include the Premier Confidence package, which adds adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and 20-inch wheels. The Premier Convenience package adds ventilated front seats, a heated and power-adjustable steering wheel, driver memory settings, and auto-dimming rearview and driver-side mirrors.
Both the LT and Premier trims also have access to the Midnight Edition Appearance package, which adds black-painted 19-inch wheels, replaces the chrome exterior trim with black-painted pieces, and includes special black interior trim pieces. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Midnight Edition Impalas are only available in black.

2019 Chevrolet Impala Premier 4dr Sedan (3.6L 6cyl 6A)
Professionally, I drive many makes and models each 100-500 miles daily over interstates and local streets and changing the vehicle daily. The Impala is one of my top favorites and accordingly I own one. Cabin room and seating comfort is superb. Ease of steering effort is optimal and handling ranks with the best rivaling some sports oriented sedans. V6 acceleration is very powerful … and braking is competitive. Fuel economy is 29 highway at 75mph and 18 city. Logic of dash and steering wheel controls is good and easy to operate. Features most all of the latest high-tech safety items. I would improve (1) quality of dash plastic materials and (2) extension length of telescoping steering wheel. Tremendous vehicle and value. Sad to see GM abandon the full-size sedan market.
The Sedan which handles very well

2019 Chevrolet Impala LT 4dr Sedan (2.5L 4cyl 6A)
I bought a new, 2019 Chevy Impala LS V-6, off a dealer's lot, five months ago. I ascertained that the Impala had a trunk, almost 19 cubic feet, which was what I was looking for. Please note that I have a 6 cylinder LS. For some reason, I could not enter 6 cylinder, under the "Model-Trim", at the end of the review.
I road tested the LS, and it was very easy to handle, and the overall … ride was smooth. I've been impressed with the electronic features on the car. For example, I enjoy the Bluetooth feature, whereby recorded music on my smartphone, is broadcast through a speaker on the dashboard. Also, I enjoy the hands free feature, whereby I can receive cell phone calls, which are also broadcast, through a speaker near the instrument panel. The instrument panel also displays the telephone number of the party who is calling me.
In addition to the electronic features, I enjoy the folding down rear seats for added cargo space, which is similar to the old station wagons, which had that feature.
The other plus features of the Impala are the ease of handling, the low noise level on the road, the excellent heating system, which comes on very quickly, as well as the very good air-conditioning system. I've been satisfied with the gas mileage which is over 19mph combined city and highway driving. I haven't as yet had the opportunity to take the Impala on the highway for a long road trip. However, I was informed that I would realize 28mpg, or perhaps a little more, for straight highway driving.
The backup camera comes in handy for backing into tight spots. However, I cannot rely on the backup camera exclusively for backing up. I prefer to also look out the rear window when backing up. The problem with the Impala is that the rear view window was designed to be too high, and hence it is difficult to clearly see who is in back of the car, as well as who is coming from the side (peripheral vision). Also, regarding the backup camera, when it rains, it is useless as the rain interferes with the rear camera.
Other criticisms that I have with the Impala is the cheap material which is used in the interior. For example, whenever I move the sun visor(s), they come off the attaching mounted hook device, as the latter is made very flimsy. I have to keep reinserting the visors into that device.
Also, the device which controls the outside left and outside right mirror is also very cheaply made. There is practically no differentiation on that device, to inform the driver that it is in a neutral position (neither controlling the right mirror or the left mirror). One time, when I was trying to position the left outside mirror with that device, first the left rear window, and then the right rear window started to open. To this day, I don't know how that control affected those windows, and I probably would not be able to duplicate that phenomenon again.
Apropos to the two outside mirrors, I cannot understand why the LS model, does not have the heated outside mirror feature. Now, whenever it snows or rains, I have to be concerned with opening the driver window, and clearing the outside driver's mirror. The latter feature should have been standard on the LS model.
Other concerns are the car radio. It is exceedingly difficult to ascertain how to switch from AM to FM and vice-versa. The controls are very confusing on the radio, and the car manual is even more confusing. The same holds true for the control on the steering wheel, which is accessed in order to see the percentage of remaining motor oil life. The latter control is very difficult to access.
In that regard, I'd like to compliment the manufacturer for the display pertaining to the pounds per square inch of the tires. I always keep that control displayed, and I am very appreciative for it. Now, I no longer have to bend down, especially on a cold winter day, and check the air pressure on each tire. I know in an instant, what the tire pressure is on each tire, not only when I start the car, but also when I am driving on the highway.
The final criticism that I have is with the design of the height of the Impala; it is not always easy to get into the car, and there are times, when one has to be very careful, not to bump one's head, when doing so. Also, I won't attempt to go to an anytime bank, as it is difficult, to reach out of the car window to access the controls of the anytime machine.
On the plus side, the controls on the dashboard are well displayed, and the intensity of the headlights at night, are very good. The various compartments inside are nice, although the glove compartment could have been made a little larger, with a light inside, as is the case with the light inside the compartment, between the two front seats.
Last, I would like to commend the Impala for the large roomy area, which is prevalent in the rear seating compartment. There is ample room back there, and the seats are very comfortable. The seating is also very comfortable in the front.
Better than expected

2019 Chevrolet Impala Premier 4dr Sedan (3.6L 6cyl 6A)
I have 8,000 miles on my 2019 Impala Premier, and I would like to pass along my comments. The GM V6 engine is smooth and capable, and ditto for the well matched 6 speed automatic transmission. Highway mileage is an impressive 30-34 mpg, depending upon speed/weather/traffic. The car cruises effortlessly and with minimal road noise. I did swap out the standard 20 inch wheels with mediocre … Bridgestones for 18 inch wheels with V-rated Michelins, and this change contributed in a major way to lower road noise and a smoother ride. Handling is above average. The seats are also very comfortable for long drives of several hundred miles. Passenger and trunk space is impressive. It remains to be seen how well this car holds up over 50,000+ miles. That being said, I currently have no regrets in buying this car. I never thought that I would say this about a Chevy, as I have principally owned Toyota and Honda products in the past.
Update as of 3/31/20 - No issues at 15,400 miles. Concerned about resale value.
Update as of 12/13/20 - No issues at 22,000 miles. One of the better cars that I have owned.
Update as of 10/15/21 - No issues at 33,000 miles. It runs great.
Update as of 10/18/22 - At 45,000 miles the battery failed. Somewhat surprised that it only lasted 3-1/2 years. Other than that, the car continues to run very well. perhaps the best V6 / 6 speed auto powertrain that I have ever owned.
