No significant changes for 2024
Part of the fifth Tahoe generation introduced for 2021
Overview
The Chevrolet Suburban has been wildly popular with large families for over 60 years. But what if you don't need something quite that big? You're in luck because since the early 1990s, the slightly smaller Chevrolet Tahoe gave shoppers that option. The current generation has been around since 2021 and this year it soldiers on without any notable changes. There is a significant update coming for 2025, with freshened styling, a massive infotainment touchscreen and a revised suspension that promises improved comfort. With this in mind, it may make more sense to hold out for next year.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe LS 4dr SUV (5.3L 8cyl 10A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.34 per gallon for regular unleaded in Arizona.
Most large SUVs in this class are truck-based body-on-frame vehicles, making them more adept at towing and off-roading than smaller midsize SUVs. As is the case with its rivals, the Tahoe counts those as its top selling points. There are some drawbacks, though, as big SUVs like this typically sacrifice ride quality, fuel efficiency and handling as a result. To the Tahoe's credit, ride comfort is notably smooth for the class, though it still corners like the big, heavy SUV it is. Unfortunately, comfort still takes a hit in regard to its noticeable wind noise and overly firm seat padding and lack of support.
Competitors to consider
The related GMC Yukon holds a slight advantage over the Chevy Tahoe in terms of interior refinement while delivering nearly identical capabilities. That's enough to push it to the top of the class, but the higher price could be a deterrent. The Ford Expedition is also a worthy consideration with similar advantages and drawbacks. Bringing up the rear is the recently redesigned Toyota Sequoia and the aging Nissan Armada.

The 2024 Tahoe delivers big when it comes to ride comfort, technology and convenience features. It also delivers big in being, well, BIG, but its overly firm seats aren't the most comfortable, and its puzzling interior layout means there's less useful storage than you might expect for a vehicle this size. Still, family haulers don't get much more modern and capable than this.
How does the Tahoe drive? Considering its size, the Tahoe does all right for itself under acceleration and braking. We tested a 4WD Tahoe with the 5.3-liter V8 engine and recorded a 0-60 mph sprint of 7.7 seconds, which is an average time for a large SUV. But for higher-speed passing maneuvers, you'll need a lot of throttle and some patience since the Tahoe's smaller V8 engine simply runs out of steam once you're past 65 mph or so. The somewhat soft brake pedal is our only complaint with the otherwise smooth and capable braking system.
Navigating city streets with the Tahoe is easy thanks to its tight turning circle and light steering. The 10-speed automatic transmission shifts promptly and unobtrusively. But the Tahoe's light steering is vague, especially at higher speeds, and the Tahoe makes it clear that you're driving a large SUV and should probably take it easy around corners.
When equipped with the optional Z71 package, the Tahoe benefits from its height-adjustable air suspension and good approach and departure angles. It's quite capable in moderate off-roading situations.
Comfort
7/10
How comfortable is the Tahoe? The Tahoe's independent rear suspension is new for this current generation, and it cures many issues that plague older models. Our test vehicle was equipped with a fully adaptive suspension and easily soaked up bumps big and small. The Tahoe could have scored higher in this category, but the first- and second-row seats are overly hard and lack the support and padding needed for long-distance driving. The Tahoe's third-row seats at least offer better padding and support than the third rows in most of the competition.
The Tahoe's multi-zone climate control system's effectiveness does not disappoint; heating and cooling are effective for all three rows. We're less fond of the smaller climate control buttons in the front and the excessive noise of the rear climate system, especially if you're sitting in the third row. Another source of elevated noise is the windshield. It produced a distinct roar at highway speeds.
Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The wide-opening doors offer easy access to front and rear seats, and even third-row passengers have ample headroom to get to their seats. The driver's seat and steering wheel have a wide range of adjustment to suit a variety of drivers. Visibility is generally good, though the tall front end can make it nearly impossible to see obstacles closer than 6 feet away. Thankfully, the Tahoe offers an excellent multi-view camera system to make parking in tight spots a breeze.
Our biggest complaint is the Tahoe's inefficient use of space. The dash-mounted push-button shifter has forced many secondary controls to be relocated and bunched together, for example, and the redundant controls for the audio system and touchscreen take up too much prime dashboard real estate. The Tahoe's steering wheel-mounted controls aren't very intuitive either.

How’s the tech? Our test vehicle was equipped with a 10.2-inch screen and navigation. We're fans of Chevrolet's latest touchscreen interface — it offers crisp graphics, an easy-to-understand menu structure and quick response times. It also has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
You'll find plenty of charging ports through the cabin, but if you opt for the power center console, those charge ports are moved to the same bin that holds the wireless charging pad. That creates a somewhat inconvenient mess of wires.
Our Z71-equipped test vehicle did not offer adaptive cruise control, which is a bit of an oversight for a nearly $70,000 SUV. We also found the lane keeping assistance slow to respond and inconsistent. Another disappointment: Our test Tahoe's stability control system was poorly calibrated. It was prone to overreacting when going around turns and dramatically reduced the vehicle's speed far beyond what we thought was necessary.
On the flip side of that, last year Super Cruise became available for Premiere and High Country trims, and while we haven't tested it in the Tahoe the tech gets high marks from us.
Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? Thanks to the independent rear suspension and larger overall dimensions, the new Tahoe can hold 25.5 cubic feet of stuff behind the third-row seats compared to the predecessor's 15.3 cubic feet. The maximum capacity grows to 122.9 cubic feet.
The driver and front passenger have little in the way of small-item storage, with only two cupholders and a bin that, depending on your options, may or may not be a wireless charging pad. The center console isn't as big as we expected and is lined with hard plastic, so you'll hear items sliding around. Chevrolet did give the Tahoe a lot of door pocket storage, with the front doors getting three tiers for your personal items. Second-row passengers lack a center console but also get ample storage in the door pockets.
When properly equipped, the Tahoe can tow up to 8,400 pounds. Our 4WD Z71-equipped test vehicle was rated to tow 8,200 pounds, though we think the 5.3-liter V8 might be pretty strained doing so. Consider getting the more powerful 6.2-liter V8 or more frugal diesel six-cylinder if you plan on doing a lot of towing. For comparison, Ford's Expedition can tow up to 9,000 pounds.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates a 4WD Tahoe with the 5.3-liter V8 will get 17 mpg combined, which is an average figure for a big SUV. On our 115-mile evaluation route, our test Tahoe returned 17.8 mpg.
It should also be noted the 5.3-liter engine in the Tahoe does not require premium gasoline, while the Ford Expedition's turbocharged engine recommends it. Chevrolet offers a more powerful 6.2-liter V8 engine that's also estimated to get 16 mpg combined. There's also an available diesel engine that's good for an impressive 24 mpg.
Value
7.5/10
Is the Tahoe a good value? Packing a full-size SUV with technology and luxury isn't going to result in a low price tag. The Tahoe starts at just over $50K and can easily exceed $80K if you like your options. Our fairly well-equipped Z71 test vehicle came in at $68,940, and for the most part it looked every bit worth that price. There are some areas of unimpressive hard plastic, but the overall fit and finish is generally good. It's definitely a match for Ford's equally pricey and capable Expedition.
The Tahoe's bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranties are fairly standard at three years/36,000 miles and five years/60,000 miles, respectively. More impressive are Chevy's five years/60,000 miles of roadside assistance and year of free scheduled maintenance.
Wildcard
7.5/10
People expect comfort, capability and convenience with a large SUV, and the Chevrolet Tahoe delivers. Its redesigned rear suspension offers better interior space, increased cargo volume and a smoother ride over a wide variety of surfaces. In short, it does a better job at being the family workhorse.
Which Tahoe does Edmunds recommend?
We suggest stepping up to the LT trim. It doesn't cost much more than the base LS and you get quite a bit more convenience and technology features. These include a power hands-free liftgate, heated front seats, upgraded audio, a digital instrument panel and a larger infotainment touchscreen. The available Luxury package is also a worthy addition.
GM is disappointing me!!! I have been driving GM vehicles for 30 years.I just bought a 2024 Tahoe about 6 weeks ago. I drove it for 6 days and the engine light went on. I took it back to the dealer and they reset it and told me to come back if it went on again. Two days later the engine lightwent on again and the maintain 4 wheel drive lite went on and the engine knocks when the Tahoe … is started. I took it back to the dealer and they keep it for 3 weeks trying to get the engine light to come back on to diagnose the issue. With no luck they gave me back my truck and I made my first car payment while they had my Tahoe. The next day the engine light came on again and is now back at the dealer. The service department is doing everything they now to fix my 2024 Tahoe with less than 800 miles on it. With no luck. I have owned a Tahoe before and I had it for 11 years with very few issues. I am frustrated with all the new technology that is out there and GM can release vehicles that Have issues and not even 800 miles on the vehicle! Very frustrated!!

2023 Chevrolet Tahoe LS 4dr SUV (5.3L 8cyl 10A)
In April 2023 I purchased a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe LS 3.0 Diesel. While returning to KY from a family vacation in July 2023 in Virginia, the check engine light came on with 4000 miles on the odometer and the Tahoe went into limp mode in Virginia. I limped it to the next exit where I disconnected the battery and cleared the code. I drove the Tahoe into West Virginia where the check engine … light came again and the Tahoe went into limp mode leaving me on the shoulder of Interstate 64 with my family. I again disconnected the battery and cleared the code, which made it possible to drive to Grayson, KY where the check engine light came on again putting the Tahoe into limp mode. I was unable to clear the code again and was forced to contact Chevrolet Roadside Assistance. Tom Hall Towing quickly responded and towed the Tahoe to Pure Country Chevrolet, which is 2 1/2 hours from my home. A family member was travelling behind me and was able to drive my family home. I contacted Pure Country Chevrolet the next day and was informed they had already diagnosed the problem and were waiting for the part to arrive. Pure Country Chevrolet, who was excellent to deal with through this incident stated the part failure was a the oil pressure sensor solenoid. When the repairs were completed to the Tahoe, I contacted Chevrolet and was informed they could have the Tahoe delivered to my home. The United Road Inc. delivery driver was supposed to contact me when he was within 1 hour of my home, which he failed to do requiring me to contact my wife to accept the vehicle. The delivery driver did not speak English and after unloading the Tahoe from a utility trailer being towed by a 20 year old half ton pick up truck, he gestured to my wife to electronically sign for the vehicle. When I arrived home, I immediately discovered a large dent in the from drivers fender. United Road Inc. denied my claim because their non English speaking driver had received a signature for vehicle. I contacted Pure Country Chevrolet and they stepped up even though it was unclear who was responsible for the damage. A PDR Technician was able to work the dent out without damage to the pant and Pure Country Chevrolet reimbursed me $331.25. Pure Country Chevrolet provided me with great customer service through the entire process. I have driven GM Vehicles my entire life and am truly disappointed with horror stories about their lack of quality in new vehicles. These companies blame Covid and supply chain problems for lack of quality, but I own 2 vehicles of a different brand that were purchased during the Covid and have had zero issues with them.

2023 Chevrolet Tahoe Premier 4dr SUV (5.3L 8cyl 10A)
Very Concerned Repeat Customer.
I purchased my 2023 Tahoe LT Plus in December 2022 from Crews Chevrolet and it was delivered on January 9th, 2023. Shortly after delivery, I encountered several issues with the vehicle such as radio audio intermittently works , radio randomly reboot on its own , excessive vibiratiin from transmission when slowing down to a stop or acceleration .This … literally made me sick to drive it. My concerns were brought to Crews Chevrolet, North Charleston service department to be addressed and all I received was the run around/blank statements with no real answers for my concerns (software update, cannot duplicate defect, etc.)! This service and service's explanation is unacceptable and unfair to Me & any customer who just spent a huge amount of money for a Brand New vehicle. With absolutely no resolution, I'm very dissatisfied and disappointed with the vehicle and service center, I've decided to trade in the Tahoe after 9k miles.
Now I have another 2023 Chevy Tahoe "Premiere" upgrade, from Crews Chevrolet, and spending $7k more than my last purchase- seeking peace of mind and being worry free when taking family trips. While test driving, I heard a rattling noise after hitting a bump and it was advised It was from the matting in the rear cargo area. After getting the car home and personally investigating, the rattling/loose noise is actually the rear passenger captain seat. Also, I discovered the passenger side mirror camera does not work!
Here I go again! Keep in mind, I upgraded my 2016 Tahoe LT after 5+ years to 2 Brand New 2023 Tahoes within 6 months with multiple sets of defects! And, ALL of these inconveniences have been inflicted on me-the customer!
I have no faith in your service department! Customers' concerns are of Zero importance.
I have no more faith in GM quality control!
I'm absolutely disgusted & disappointed.
Going into the Second Weekend without my vehicle, I stopped by your service center on July 6, 2023, to follow-up with the repair status of my vehicle because I wasn't getting any returned calls from customer care.
Regarding fixing the back-seat passenger side seat track, customer care indicated nothing has been done in wait for the vehicle’s 2nd video control module for the defective video camera. I was advised, the second video control module that was installed, didn't work because it was programmed for a different vehicle.
As of today, July 7, 2023, the service department has a new replacement on hand for the video camera installation. -Which may or may not resolve the issue plus the seat track has not been addressed. I’ve also been told the service staff is short-staffed due to employees calling out.
I understand warranty vehicles don't generate cash flow for the Technicians and the vehicles get pushed aside. So, the customer has no priority. Even proving so, when I track my vehicle’s location, my vehicle has been parked in the same spot since I dropped it off June 28, 2023.
Still Really Disappointed! Keep In Mind These Are New 2023 Vehicles

The Tahoe is a large SUV that rides on a platform derived from GM's pickup trucks. With the Tahoe in its fifth generation, the time has come for an update and we're likely to see the three-row SUV get the same styling updates found on the refreshed Silverado 1500 that debuted in 2022. That means a gigantic front grille and curved LED details up front, all in an effort to make the Tahoe appear even burlier.
These truck roots give body-on-frame SUVs like the Tahoe a big advantage over the field of midsize SUVs — which are for the most part car-based — when it comes to towing and overall ability off-road. And in the case of the Tahoe, it still has a decent ride and the driving dynamics of a smaller vehicle.
Official information on the 2024 Tahoe is still forthcoming, so we don't yet know what this refresh will hold for the interior technology or any additions under the hood (a hybrid powertrain perhaps?). But with solid bones to build off of, this new Tahoe has plenty of potential to edge out competitors like the Ford Expedition, Jeep Wagoneer and Toyota Sequoia.
Edmunds says
The 2024 Tahoe is up for a refresh that should update the big ute's styling, though it remains to be seen if these changes will touch up the interior and powertrains as well. Check back with us for updates on the 2024 Tahoe as we find out more.
