What is the Edge?
Though its name might suggest advanced next-gen tech, a sharp design, or "travel to the ends of the Earth" capability, the Ford Edge is really just a competent midsize SUV. Though it lacks the seven-passenger capacity of its slightly larger brother, the Ford Explorer, the Edge does offer plenty of passenger room across its two rows. And even in its advanced age (the current model was last redesigned nearly a decade ago) the Edge remains competitive by meeting modern expectations for performance, comfort and the usability of its touchscreen interface. That said, it doesn't really excel at any one thing, and many rivals are newer and less expensive.
While the Edge has long been a solid pick in its segment, it can't outrun modernization. It's built at the Oakville Assembly plant in Ontario, and that facility will soon shift to produce fully electric vehicles. That leads us to believe this crossover — at least in its current gas-powered form — isn't long for this world. If you want to take one last crack at Ford's roomy, easy-to-drive midsize SUV, 2024 might be your last chance.
