What is the Explorer?
The 2024 Ford Explorer is a three-row SUV and one of Ford's largest and longest-running utility vehicles. The Explorer debuted more than 30 years ago and was one of the first widely popular SUVs, and the current sixth-generation model offers a more refined ride, better utility and more tech than ever before. The Explorer received a mild update in 2022, but we think Ford has another update in store for 2024.
Spy photographers have caught camouflaged Explorer ST and Timberline models testing on public roads, which leads us to believe there's a styling update coming for 2024. Look for changes to the headlights, taillights, grille and bumpers. In addition to fresher styling, we wouldn't be surprised if Ford updated the Explorer's tech too. The 15.5-inch touchscreen display that's available in the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Ford F-150 Lightning is an improvement over the Explorer's current infotainment system.
The Explorer competes in a crowded class, with three-row offerings from plenty of automakers. Some of Edmunds' top picks include the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade and Honda Pilot. Those all offer slightly more premium interiors than the Explorer, and the price tag for the Ford can go up quickly if you start tacking on options. Ford does also offer the larger Expedition and smaller Escape and Edge models if you like the Explorer but it doesn't quite fit the bill.
