2025 Ford Explorer SUV Trims Comparison

Trim level differences

The 2025 Ford Explorer is a three-row midsize SUV that is available in four trim levels: Active, ST-Line, ST and Platinum. The standard engine is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder that makes 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. A turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 is optional on the Platinum and standard on the ST. It generates 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft. A 10-speed automatic is the only transmission available, and every trim level comes standard with rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is optional on them all. Below, we will highlight all the important features and options on each trim level.

Active
Comes well equipped with:

  • 18-inch wheels
  • LED exterior lighting
  • Power liftgate
  • Class III trailer hitch
  • Keyless entry and start
  • Heated, power-adjustable front seats
  • Second-row bench seat (seven-passenger seating)
  • Three-zone automatic climate control
  • Digital instrument cluster
  • 13.2-inch touchscreen
  • Google built-in (Google-based navigation and integrated voice commands)
  • Wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
  • Six-speaker sound system

Ford's Co-Pilot360 Assist+ suite of advanced driver assist systems is standard on the Explorer. It includes:

  • Forward collision warning with automatic braking (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
  • Adaptive cruise control (maintains a driver-set distance between the Ford and the car in front)
  • Lane centering system (makes minor steering corrections to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane)
  • Intersection collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision during a left turn and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
  • Evasive steering assistance (enhances the forward collision mitigation system with steering-based collision avoidance)
  • Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning (alerts you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while in reverse)
  • Rear parking sensors

The Active Comfort package is the only major option bundle on the Active. It includes:

  • Remote engine start
  • Additional front-passenger seat adjustability
  • Synthetic leather upholstery
  • Heated steering wheel

ST-Line
A sportier-looking Explorer, the ST-Line has:

  • 20-inch wheels
  • Black grille
  • Black lower-body cladding
  • Darkened headlights and taillights
  • Black synthetic leather upholstery with cloth inserts and red stitching
  • 10-speaker B&O sound system
  • Enhanced adaptive cruise control system (can react to traffic signs and set speed)
  • Front and side parking sensors
  • Surround-view camera system (gives you a top-down view of the Explorer and its surroundings in tight parking situations)
  • BlueCruise (uses the vehicle's advanced driver aids to further provide hands-free driving capability on select highways; subscription-based)

A Premium package is available to class up the ST-Line. It includes:

  • Massaging front seats
  • Heated second-row seats
  • Power-folding third-row seats
  • Power-adjustable steering column
  • Second-row manual sunshades
  • Ambient lighting
  • Wireless phone charger

ST
Includes all of the ST-Line's upgrades, plus:

  • 400-hp V6
  • 21-inch wheels
  • Sport-tuned suspension
  • Upgraded front brakes
  • Ventilated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Paddle shifters
  • Heated second-row captain's chairs
  • 14-speaker B&O sound system

Platinum
The Platinum is less expensive than the ST but more luxurious. Besides the Active's standard equipment, it includes everything from the ST-Line Premium package, plus:

  • Available 400-hp V6
  • 20-inch wheels
  • Twin-panel sunroof
  • Adaptive headlights (swivel as you turn the steering wheel for better illumination in curves)
  • Special exterior and interior trim details
  • Leather upholstery with synthetic suede inserts
  • Heated second-row captain's chairs
  • 14-speaker B&O sound system

Which Explorer trim does Edmunds recommend?

Every Explorer comes well equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto plus some nice extras such as heated front seats. You will probably be fine with the base Active trim, but we think it's worth paying a bit more to get the ST-Line for its more stylish look and extra driver assist features, including hands-free BlueCruise. Explorer buyers who plan on towing heavier trailers should further upgrade to the Platinum or ST to get the more powerful V6 engine.
