Overview
The latest light-duty pickups are impressively capable for towing and hauling. But there are still situations where only a monster heavy-duty truck will do, and that's where the 2025 Ford F-450 Super Duty comes in. The F-450 is up to the task with a maximum rating of 40,000 pounds with a fifth-wheel setup. We're guessing few owners need this much capability — that's half as much as what a commercial semi truck can haul — but if nothing else, it's good for bragging rights. The F-450 also works out great for less strenuous tasks. It boasts a roomy cabin and plenty of helpful technology features.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2025 Ford F-450 Super Duty XL 2dr Regular Cab DRW (6.7L 8cyl Turbodiesel 10A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of N/A undefined in Texas.
There's no doubt the F-450 has the muscle to tow huge loads, but it also has smart technology to make transport safer and easier. With the availability of the Onboard Scales system, you don't have to worry about overloading the bed with payload. An onscreen readout measures how much weight your payload is. Meanwhile, Pro Trailer Hitch Assist and Backup Assist eliminate the most stressful parts of towing: lining up the hitch and backing a trailer into a spot. Once underway, the F-450 can help you out with trailer coverage for the blind-spot warning system and a smart navigation system that will help you avoid routes where you may exceed size limitations.
Competitors to consider
Ford's F-450 Super Duty is for niche buyers with exceptional recreational or commercial hauling needs. If your needs are slightly less exceptional, consider getting the slightly less expensive (and more comfortable) F-350 Super Duty. Other options include the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD, GMC Sierra 3500HD and Ram 3500.
Which F-450 Super Duty does Edmunds recommend?
Ford hasn't released official information on the 2025 F-450 as of this writing. We'll update our recommendation if anything changes, but based on last year's truck, we recommend the XLT trim. It's a big step up from the base XL model, which looks and feels more like a rental or work truck. The XLT benefits from carpeting and cloth seat upholstery, as well as forward collision mitigation.

2024 Ford F-450 Super Duty Limited 4dr Crew Cab 4WD DRW (6.7L 8cyl Turbodiesel 10A)
Hands down the best truck on the market, hence the shortage of inventory, and backlog of customer orders. Technology is astounding. The new HUD is fantastic, and the screen is better quality than my previous 2019.
Awesome until the HO engine blew at 8100 miles

Engine blew while towing a 21000lbs 5th wheel down I-40. Large chunks of metal in the oil pan. Ford Roadside Assistance was worthless. Stranded three weeks waiting to get it repaired.
