Overview
Maybe we're being swayed by the 2024 GV80's resemblance to the Bentley Bentayga. Or maybe it's the fact that most upscale brands' hottest sellers right now — heck, every brand's hottest sellers right now — are SUVs. But the Genesis GV80 strikes us as the young brand's most completely realized luxury product yet.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2024 Genesis GV80 2.5T 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.74 per gallon for premium unleaded in Idaho.
The impression left by the British silhouette would be easy to shake if the GV80's interior didn't back it up so completely. Soft leather, satin-finish metallic trim, burled wood, and adjustable ambient lighting make for a truly upscale feel regardless of price point. Given Genesis is a subsidiary of Hyundai-Kia, the GV80's price point is several thousand dollars lower than that of any competitor. Yet the feature content rivals any established luxury brand, with available self-parking, ventilated seats front and rear, two-tone leather — the list goes on as long as any other brand's.
The GV80 exemplifies all of the astounding strides Genesis has made since transitioning from a single questionable Lexus clone into a full-line brand. Dig deep into the how in our Expert Rating below.

First efforts are rarely home runs but the first-ever SUV from Genesis, the 2024 GV80, is flying close to the proverbial fence. This midsize luxury SUV offers bucket loads of amenities and a striking design at a price that undercuts the stalwarts from Germany. While there are a few areas in need of improvement, overall the GV80 is a very impressive SUV.
How does the GV80 drive? The GV80 can be outfitted with a four- or six-cylinder engine — both are turbocharged with power figures that look impressive on paper. Our test GV80 came with the larger 3.5-liter V6 engine. In our testing it covered 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds at the Edmunds test track. That's decently quick for a midsize SUV, but most competitors with six-cylinder engines are slightly quicker.
Engine aside, the rest of the driving experience isn't all that remarkable. The brakes respond a little abruptly at times, the steering effort is a tad heavy even in its Comfort setting, and although the handling isn't sloppy, most of the German SUVs feel tighter and more composed on a curvy road. If you intend to use the GV80 mainly as a highway cruiser, it'll do great, and none of this other stuff will matter as much.
Comfort
8.5/10
How comfortable is the GV80? One of the most important aspects for any luxury vehicle is comfort, and the GV80 does this better than many. One of the highlights is excellent ride comfort. All V6-equipped GV80s come with an electronically controlled suspension system that uses a forward-facing camera to read the road surface ahead and make suspension adjustments quickly on the fly.
The tri-zone climate control is also a highlight for its ease of use and effectiveness. The same goes for the heated and ventilated seats that are standard in all but the base trim. Seat comfort is solid as well, especially with the upgraded seats in the Prestige trim that have additional adjustments. Genesis also does a commendable job of insulating its cabins against sound and vibrations, and the GV80 is no exception.
Interior
7/10
How’s the interior? Some hits and misses here. On one hand, the user interface is different, looks cool, and offers different ways of interacting with the infotainment. But the clickable knurled rotary wheel is somewhat clunky to operate. Not helping matters is the screen's inconsistent menu structure. The combination results in an infotainment system that is unintuitive and often distracting when you're on the go.
The GV80 is comparable in passenger space to the average midsize SUV. One exception: Headroom is a little tighter. Access to the optional third row is better than in most any other vehicle in this segment, but the third row is quite small and best reserved for kids. The step-in height feels a tad higher than average, but the seat height is right at hip level for the average adult, which allows you to slip in pretty easily. Seeing out of the cabin is easy thanks to large windows and strategically placed mirrors. The optional surround-view camera is great and worth getting.

Save as much as $7,138 with Edmunds Click on the trim you’re interested in to see what Edmunds suggests you should pay to get a good deal. Savings vary by trim; $7,138 refers to estimated savings off of MSRP for the 3.5T Prestige Signature trim.
How’s the tech? There are plenty of advanced driver aids, and most of them come standard and function very well. Genesis' smart cruise control with Highway Driving Assist is one of the better systems in the class and even allows for some hands-off operation when conditions permit.
The available 21-speaker premium audio system is also quite impressive in the sound quality it delivers, though Genesis seemed to take a step back with the navigation map, forgoing street names on the display in exchange for a cleaner look, something we've recently noted in BMWs too. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone integration is included but isn't wireless yet.
Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? The GV80's cargo area is wide and accessible. The second row has a 40/20/40-split configuration and can fold flat at the touch of a button. Power-folding/unfolding third-row seats are one touch too. However, we noticed in our testing that if you've inadvertently got the second-row seatbacks reclined too far back, the third-row seats will get stuck on them halfway down in their folding cycle.
Underfloor storage in the cargo area is limited, but you can store the luggage cover here when it's not in use. Up front, storage for personal effects is better than in the average luxury SUV. But the door pockets are tiny, and plugging your phone in to access Apple CarPlay or Android Auto creates a mess of wires up front. The small bonus storage area underneath the center console can be useful.
Planning on hauling stuff? The GV80's 6,000-pound maximum towing when properly equipped is respectable and good enough for small travel trailers and recreational toys. But some rival SUVs have limits of more than 7,000 pounds.

Fuel Economy
6/10
How’s the fuel economy? The GV80 with the V6 engine receives an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in combined driving, which is slightly less efficient than competitors with V6 engines. It's also not quite as quick at moving the GV80 down the road as those engines. In Edmunds' testing, we saw 20.7 mpg on our 115-mile standardized evaluation route, which indicates the GV80 should meet its fuel economy estimates if driven with a bit of restraint.
Value
8/10
Is the GV80 a good value? While the GV80 lacks a bit of that high-end heft in some of its switchgear and trim, it gets the fundamentals right and offers lots of luxury features for thousands less than the competition. In terms of quality, it looks and feels like it's a level above typical Japanese luxury SUVs but a step behind the Germans.
One area Genesis has an indisputable lead is warranty coverage. Its five-year/60,000-mile basic and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage far exceeds anything its competitors offer, and Genesis includes three years/36,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance.
Wildcard
7.5/10
The GV80 sports a pretty striking design with a unique elegance. It may not be to everyone's liking, but it does represent a form that is identifiably Genesis and distinctive in the class. Its twin-turbo V6 is peppy, and its ride is incredibly comfortable. But besides being pleasant transportation, the GV80 is rarely exciting.
Which GV80 does Edmunds recommend?
The GV80 is available with two engines: a turbocharged four-cylinder and a turbo V6. While many buyers will find the six-cylinder's additional power unnecessary, Genesis lumps extra features in with the bigger engine at every trim level. We like the 3.5T Advanced for its real leather, massaging front seats and heated second row, and self-parking function.
Over the last 12 months my GV80 has been in the dealership for repair now for the 4th time and 5 months and counting. There are severe computer/electrical/engine problems - actually nobody knows what the problem is - they just keep replacing parts. The first time all the warning lights for EVERYTHING just started going off and the dash would go black. After 2 repair tries and 12 weeks in … the dealership they replaced the cluster (resetting mileage to zero). The car then seemed fine for a few months and then it started again. This time the warning lights went crazy again, but also the car started bucking and shutting down randomly while driving. Back to the dealership for another 7 weeks. That resulted in a replaced actuator. It ran fine for 2 more months, then the warning lights started going crazy again and the engine light is on. It is back at the dealership again for who knows how long. They clearly have no idea how to fix it. Genesis Canada will do nothing about it except to say they are working hard to fix it. I think it is clear they can’t fix it. As there are no lemon laws in Canada, they just completely disregard the responsibility that they should have for the customer. To trade it in will result in a huge loss to me due to all the issues, as well as passing the buck to a new unsuspecting buyer. Genesis needs to stand by their product but clearly they do not care.
A real CATASTROPHIC GENESIS GV80 consumer experience.
Genesis motor america, hyundai national customer service, bbb autoline did not help me: there were only trying to force me to accept the repurchase instead of a full replacement of the lemon vehicle (not to my benefice).
Hyundai’s attorney made false accusations trying to dismiss the claim: genesis motor america, llc (gma/hma) does … definitely not stand behind they consumers!
Same with sedgwick (third party in charge of the claim on behalf of hma/gma): dispute the provision of the lemon law (florida statutes chapter 681), they are trying to only accept the repurchase instead of replacement.
Huge waste of money (in my case) to accept a repurchase instead of replacement.
I have Safety Issues with my 2021 GV80 PRESTIGE:
• Battery runs out of charge within one day without any rational reason (i.e.,
no lights, no alarm, no equipment in use) which put me at risk since the car would stop at any time without any warning.
• Then, the Genesis Connected Services will sent alert messages every three (3) minutes for minor events (e.g., washer fluid low, window open, door unlocked…).
Those same two problems were reproduced at HYUNDAI RICK CASE DAVIE FL – Official Agent even after two GENESIS FIELD SERVICE ENGINEERS changed the following parts (between May 203 and August 2023):
i. JUNCTION BOX ASSY (Ref. 91950-T6032): The junction box assemble is the main fuse box on the driver’s side under the dash.
ii. JUNCTION BLOCK-SUB (Ref. 91957-T6500): The junction box sub assembly is the fuse box location in the rear of the vehicle on the driver’s side.
iii. AUDIO UNIT (Ref. 96560-T6600): The radio and navigation unit.
iv. EXTERNAL AMP ASSY (Ref. 96370-T6700): The power amplifier for the audio unit.
Timeline:
On 04.20.2023, 04.21.2023 and 05.11.2023, my SUV (2021 GV80 3.5T Prestige, V6, AWD) was dropped at GENESIS official agent facility (RICK CASE DAVIE, FL) to be inspected and repaired based on the non-conformities described above.
On 08.25.2023, BBB AUTOLINE ARBITRATION rules for a REPLACEMENT that manufacturer (GMA) refused to execute. Only unlawfully accept a REPURCHASE procedure (CONSUMER is loosing money on such offer).
On 01.17.2024, after arbitration, FLORIDA ATTORNEY GENERAL BOARD (AG) ordered to manufacturer (GMA) to provide a REPLACEMENT vehicle. The 40-day notice ended on 03.04.2024: The manufacturer still did comply with the order, and did not provide any replacement.
FYI: Manufacturer did not appeal any of the arbitration decisions (BBB AUTOLINE& FL STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL).
On 03.03.2024, MANUFACTURER (GMA) failed to provide REPLACEMENT vehicle. As today (05.13.2024), MANUFACTURER is in the process to provide me with a new 2024 GV80 but GMA is in violation of AG BOARD ORDER for 72 consecutive days. Based on applicable law (Florida Statutes Chapter 681) GMA is potentially subject of fines for each days being behind schedule.
On 03.14.2024, I reported this claim to the NHTSA: Claim #11577476.
My Lemon Car vehicle (subject of this claim) is still immobilized at the official agent (RICK CASE DAVIE, FL) since May 05, 2023, totalizing today, 369 days, without getting any loaner of replacement as clearly requested since May 30, 2023 when I filled my initial claim with the MANUFACTURER (GMA).
PS: If I had accepted a REPURCHASE, I would have lost a lot of money. This is probably why MANUFACTURER is trying to corn its CONSUMERS with a REPURCHASE deal which is not to CONSUMER advantage.
Hoping this will help you to make a decision. Do not give up: The Lemon Law is on CONSUMER side. If you are consistent and methodological, you do not need to hire anybody to represent you. Just follow the guidelines of the LEMON LAW procedure of the State where you file your claim. In Florida, it is just a form to complete and some documents to provide about the issue(s).
Bought a 2024 GV 80 less than 90 days ago. The AC has gone out already on a brand new car. To make matters worse, the service department does not have service appointments for weeks. My husband has called several times and was told someone would contact us. We have yet to receive a call. He was also told this is a common problem for this model. This customer service does not match the … car price tag. Do yourself a favor stick with Mercedes! You'll receive much better customer service. I'm so disappointed.
Test drove Audi Q8 and BMW. Fairly comparable. Luxury bells and whistles within Genesis far outweigh the other 2 competitors. Also, $10-$25K cheaper with more options was a deal breaker for me. I consistently get 22mpg even with city driving (I drive in eco mode) so not bad at all. Highly recommend! Can't beat the warranty also
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2024 Genesis GV80, so we've included reviews for other years of the GV80 since its last redesign.
The biggest difference between these two is something that can't be quantified with numbers: the GLE's pervading feel of solidity. It's somewhat lighter than the GV80, but everything from the way its doors close to the ride over a rough road conveys a reassuring sense of heft and quality. Of course, that sense costs thousands of dollars more than the Genesis.
Genesis clearly has the formula figured out as far as features and design go, but with the BMW X5 as a foil, its relative lack of a personality emerges. The X5's athletic handling lends it a character the GV80 lacks, and its silky inline-six motivates the X5 with a verve the GV80 can't muster. That's to say nothing of the snarling V8s available in the X5 — for a premium. Read Edmunds' long-term road test of the BMW X5.
Climb from the GV80 into an Audi Q7 and you'll notice Audi's slick touchscreen interfaces, open-pore wood trims, and expertly calibrated control feels. The Q7 is a tactile delight. But if you're thinking the Audi looks a little too familiar and pedestrian from the outside, we wouldn't disagree. It costs more than the GV80 too.
The Genesis GV80 isn't the brand's flagship in name; that title belongs to the ever-impressive G90 luxury sedan. However, in the U.S., the GV80 is one of Genesis' most important cars. It's the brand's biggest SUV, and in a market that's as hungry for people haulers as ever, the GV80 plays a big role in the automaker's success here. We've lauded its comfortable ride, impressive suite of standard and available tech, and solid build quality.
Other offerings in the segment like the Mercedes GLE and the BMW X5 offer up more performance and more luxury, but those models often get far, far pricier. The GV80 is for customers who value, well, value. For 2024, we don't see much changing for the GV80. It will only be the GV80's fourth model year on sale, and SUVs typically soldier on another year before receiving a major face-lift. There might be some changes to standard and optional equipment, but by and large we expect the GV80 to remain untouched.
Edmunds says
The GV80 is a big deal for Genesis, and we're excited to see what the automaker has in store for the expected 2025 refresh.
