The 2025 Genesis GV80 offers loads of amenities and a striking design at a price that undercuts the stalwarts from Germany. While there are a few areas in need of improvement, overall the GV80 is a very impressive midsize luxury SUV.Read full review

Overview

If you still have a hard time taking Genesis seriously as a luxury brand, the GV80 is your sign to get with the times. This midsize SUV doesn't just match longstanding luxury brands in feature content; it equals them in feel, fit and finish. The leather is supple, the wood trim feels solid, and the design is striking inside and out. And for 2025, Genesis has spun off an in-vogue coupe model of the GV80, which we review separately. The GV80 feels like a party Genesis is throwing to celebrate its arrival.

Edmunds spotlight: High-tech suspension
Even the most advanced suspensions are usually reactive, meaning the tire rolls over a bump or dip and the spring and damper move accordingly. The GV80's available Electronically Controlled Suspension with Road Preview, however, is a proactive system. It uses a camera to scan the road ahead, spotting surface irregularities and preparing the suspension at the appropriate wheels. Say you drive over a pothole with the passenger-side tires. The GV80 can individually soften the spring at each corner just before it encounters the pothole, allowing the wheel to glide over it with less of a jolt transmitted to the cabin. It's a trick bit of tech that is becoming more common on luxury flagships but is still rare at the GV80's price point.
Competitors to consider
Shoppers looking for a midsize luxury SUV have to sift through an embarrassment of solid choices. The Mercedes-Benz GLE and BMW X5 are among the best all-around entries, while buyers with some financial flexibility looking for something a little more athletic should check out the Porsche Cayenne. For enthusiasts at the rugged end of the spectrum, the Land Rover Defender is available in a bewildering number of configurations, one of which will surely meet your needs and budget.

Good
7.9
out of 10
We drove the Genesis GV80 on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
7.5/10
How does the GV80 drive? The GV80 can be outfitted with a four- or six-cylinder engine — both are turbocharged with power figures that look impressive on paper. Our test GV80 came with the larger 3.5-liter V6 engine. In our testing it covered 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds at the Edmunds test track. That's decently quick for a midsize SUV, but most competitors with six-cylinder engines are slightly quicker.
Engine aside, the rest of the driving experience isn't all that remarkable. The brakes respond a little abruptly at times, the steering effort is a tad heavy even in its Comfort setting, and although the handling isn't sloppy, most of the German SUVs feel tighter and more composed on a curvy road. If you intend to use the GV80 mainly as a highway cruiser, it'll do great, and none of this other stuff will matter as much.

Comfort
8.5/10
How comfortable is the GV80? One of the most important aspects for any luxury vehicle is comfort, and the GV80 does this better than many. One of the highlights is excellent ride comfort. All V6-equipped GV80s come with an electronically controlled suspension system that uses a forward-facing camera to read the road surface ahead and make suspension adjustments quickly on the fly.
The tri-zone climate control is also a highlight for its ease of use and effectiveness. The same goes for the available heated and ventilated seats. Seat comfort is very good as well. Genesis does a commendable job of insulating its cabins against sound and vibrations, and the GV80 is no exception.

Technology
8.5/10
How’s the tech? There are plenty of advanced driver aids, and most of them come standard and function very well to help make driving easier. The available premium audio system is also quite impressive in the sound quality it delivers. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone integration comes on the GV80 but requires you to use a USB cord to connect your phone; there's no wireless option.
Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? The GV80's cargo area is wide and accessible. The second row has a 40/20/40-split configuration and can fold flat at the touch of a button. The third-row seats available in V6 models fold with one touch, too. The cargo area is wide and is roomy enough for daily errands or the occasional road trip. Up front, storage for personal effects is better than in the average luxury SUV. The small bonus storage area underneath the center console can be useful.
Planning on hauling stuff? The GV80's 6,000-pound maximum towing when properly equipped is respectable and good enough for small travel trailers and recreational toys. But some rival SUVs can lug more than 7,000 pounds.

Fuel Economy
6/10
How’s the fuel economy? The GV80 with the V6 engine receives an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in combined driving, which is slightly less efficient than competitors with V6 engines. It's also not quite as quick at moving the GV80 down the road as those engines. In Edmunds' testing, we saw 20.7 mpg on our 115-mile standardized evaluation route, which indicates the GV80 should meet its fuel economy estimates if driven with a bit of restraint.
Value
8/10
Is the GV80 a good value? While the GV80 lacks a bit of that high-end heft in some of its switchgear and trim, it gets the fundamentals right and offers lots of luxury features for thousands less than the competition. In terms of quality, it looks and feels like it's a level above typical Japanese luxury SUVs but a step behind the Germans.
One area Genesis has an indisputable lead is warranty coverage. Its five-year/60,000-mile basic and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage far exceeds anything its competitors offer, and Genesis includes three years/36,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance.

Wildcard
7.5/10
The GV80 sports a pretty striking design with a unique elegance. It may not be to everyone's liking, but it does represent a form that is identifiably Genesis and distinctive in the class. Its twin-turbo V6 is peppy, and its ride is incredibly comfortable. But besides being pleasant transportation, the GV80 is rarely exciting.
2025 Genesis GV80 trim level differences
The 2025 Genesis GV80 is a midsize luxury SUV available in five trim levels: Standard, Base, Select, Advanced and Prestige. There are two engine options: 2.5T models are powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, while 3.5T trims get a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 generating 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft. Both engines are paired exclusively with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The Standard, Base and Select trims are only available with the four-cylinder, while buyers of the Advanced and Prestige can choose either engine. Keep reading for a rundown of the most significant features that come on each trim level.
Which GV80 trim does Edmunds recommend?
Most of the luxury and tech features available on the GV80 are standard on the 2.5T Prestige, including heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, heated rear seats, automated parking, the Electronically Controlled Suspension with Road Preview, and active noise cancellation. If you don't need the kids-only third row of seating — which is only available in the V6-powered 3.5T trims — the equivalent 2.5T will save you several thousand dollars. And the 2.5T's turbocharged four-cylinder is plenty powerful.

GV80 PRESTIGE IMMOBILIZED FOR 369 DAYS!
1 out of 5 starsDisappointed GENESIS customer, 05/14/2024
2024 Genesis GV80 3.5T 4dr SUV AWD (3.5L 6cyl Turbo 8A)
A real CATASTROPHIC GENESIS GV80 consumer experience.
Genesis motor america, hyundai national customer service, bbb autoline did not help me: there were only trying to force me to accept the repurchase instead of a full replacement of the lemon vehicle (not to my benefice).
Hyundai’s attorney made false accusations trying to dismiss the claim: genesis motor america, llc (gma/hma) does … definitely not stand behind they consumers!
Same with sedgwick (third party in charge of the claim on behalf of hma/gma): dispute the provision of the lemon law (florida statutes chapter 681), they are trying to only accept the repurchase instead of replacement.
Huge waste of money (in my case) to accept a repurchase instead of replacement.
I have Safety Issues with my 2021 GV80 PRESTIGE:
• Battery runs out of charge within one day without any rational reason (i.e.,
no lights, no alarm, no equipment in use) which put me at risk since the car would stop at any time without any warning.
• Then, the Genesis Connected Services will sent alert messages every three (3) minutes for minor events (e.g., washer fluid low, window open, door unlocked…).
Those same two problems were reproduced at HYUNDAI RICK CASE DAVIE FL – Official Agent even after two GENESIS FIELD SERVICE ENGINEERS changed the following parts (between May 203 and August 2023):
i. JUNCTION BOX ASSY (Ref. 91950-T6032): The junction box assemble is the main fuse box on the driver’s side under the dash.
ii. JUNCTION BLOCK-SUB (Ref. 91957-T6500): The junction box sub assembly is the fuse box location in the rear of the vehicle on the driver’s side.
iii. AUDIO UNIT (Ref. 96560-T6600): The radio and navigation unit.
iv. EXTERNAL AMP ASSY (Ref. 96370-T6700): The power amplifier for the audio unit.
Timeline:
On 04.20.2023, 04.21.2023 and 05.11.2023, my SUV (2021 GV80 3.5T Prestige, V6, AWD) was dropped at GENESIS official agent facility (RICK CASE DAVIE, FL) to be inspected and repaired based on the non-conformities described above.
On 08.25.2023, BBB AUTOLINE ARBITRATION rules for a REPLACEMENT that manufacturer (GMA) refused to execute. Only unlawfully accept a REPURCHASE procedure (CONSUMER is loosing money on such offer).
On 01.17.2024, after arbitration, FLORIDA ATTORNEY GENERAL BOARD (AG) ordered to manufacturer (GMA) to provide a REPLACEMENT vehicle. The 40-day notice ended on 03.04.2024: The manufacturer still did comply with the order, and did not provide any replacement.
FYI: Manufacturer did not appeal any of the arbitration decisions (BBB AUTOLINE& FL STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL).
On 03.03.2024, MANUFACTURER (GMA) failed to provide REPLACEMENT vehicle. As today (05.13.2024), MANUFACTURER is in the process to provide me with a new 2024 GV80 but GMA is in violation of AG BOARD ORDER for 72 consecutive days. Based on applicable law (Florida Statutes Chapter 681) GMA is potentially subject of fines for each days being behind schedule.
On 03.14.2024, I reported this claim to the NHTSA: Claim #11577476.
My Lemon Car vehicle (subject of this claim) is still immobilized at the official agent (RICK CASE DAVIE, FL) since May 05, 2023, totalizing today, 369 days, without getting any loaner of replacement as clearly requested since May 30, 2023 when I filled my initial claim with the MANUFACTURER (GMA).
PS: If I had accepted a REPURCHASE, I would have lost a lot of money. This is probably why MANUFACTURER is trying to corn its CONSUMERS with a REPURCHASE deal which is not to CONSUMER advantage.
Hoping this will help you to make a decision. Do not give up: The Lemon Law is on CONSUMER side. If you are consistent and methodological, you do not need to hire anybody to represent you. Just follow the guidelines of the LEMON LAW procedure of the State where you file your claim. In Florida, it is just a form to complete and some documents to provide about the issue(s).
