The original Hummer remains an automotive icon as both a military vehicle that was available to the public and one of the most inefficient forms of modern transportation. Following in the original's tire tracks are the all-electric Hummer EV pickup that debuted in 2022 and the Hummer EV SUV introduced last year. They're larger than their predecessors, and despite having no tailpipe, they're not what anyone would consider "green." The Hummer EVs are some of the least efficient electric vehicles on the road due to their boxy shape and curb weight approaching 10,000 pounds.

Edmunds spotlight: The brutalist EV

Most carmakers in the EV space take great pains to maximize efficiency and performance. This approach typically involves hundreds of minute improvements to achieve their goal. The GMC Hummer EV SUV takes a more primitive approach that seems appropriate considering the Hummer's history. Rather than try to limit the Hummer EV SUV's weight or streamline its shape to improve range and performance, GMC just added more batteries. The brick-shaped Hummer comes with a massive 170-kWh battery pack, more than double what the typical electric SUV needs. To GMC's credit, the result is 315 miles of estimated range, though you may end up spending just as much on electricity as you would on gas or diesel.

Competitors to consider

If you're looking for an EV with similar off-road chops as the Hummer EV SUV, the Rivian R1S is impressively capable and is priced similarly on the top end. Besides that, it's easier to drive, delivers more range, and has a higher-quality interior. New entrants include the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology and an all-electric Land Rover Range Rover, both of which add a healthy dose of luxury. The Hummer EV SUV has some (literally) big drawbacks, so if serious off-roading isn't your thing, a more conventional EV might be a better fit.

Performance

How does the HUMMER EV SUV drive? Watts to Freedom (yes, WTF) is a questionable choice of name for the launch control feature, but the results can't be denied. With WTF engaged, our test GMC Hummer EV SUV ripped from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. Getting that quick of a time out of something this large and heavy is absolutely bonkers. The Hummer rears up when you jam the accelerator, and all you can see is the sky. By the time the nose drops back down you're moving at extra-legal speeds. It's an incredible sensation.

As we later learned, the other parts of the driving experience are ... less incredible. The vehicle leans heavily as you go around turns. Slow and steady is how you should drive the Hummer EV. Thankfully, acceleration and braking are smooth. It's easy to cruise around town in this big SUV.

Off-road, the Hummer EV is a monster. Its air suspension can raise the vehicle to create more than 16 inches of ground clearance, which is a lot more than what you get even from a Jeep Wrangler. And with the Extreme Off-Road package equipped (as on our test vehicle), the Hummer gets serious mud-terrain tires and plenty of underbody protection.

Comfort

How comfortable is the HUMMER EV SUV? The front seats are great. They have enough bolster support to keep you comfortable but also enough cushion that you won't feel fatigued on long drives. We did notice that the synthetic materials on the doors and armrests have a rough texture, and that can diminish the comfort level.

The climate control has three zones of control, and we like that the seat heating/ventilation works quickly even if the fans are a little loud. Those big all-terrain tires do give off a fair bit of noise on the highway, but you won't notice that because of the wind noise and the whine you get from the electric motors. The Hummer EV SUV is still quieter than most trucks out there but not most EVs.

Interior

How’s the interior? Given the Hummer EV SUV's size, you might expect it to have a matching gigantic interior. But that isn't the case. It's still roomy enough to fit adult passengers comfortably in the back seat, but the headroom and legroom you get are more like a midsize sedan's than a big SUV's. Up front, the driver's seat and steering wheel offer plenty of adjustment range, making it easy to find a comfortable driving position. It's also relatively easy to get in and out thanks to the air suspension that lowers the height of the vehicle when it's parked.

Much of the vehicle's functionality is accessed through the center screen. Thankfully, most of the vehicle's commonly used functions are easy to find and use in just one tap. There are still some physical controls on the steering wheel and in the center console (to change drive modes and suspension height) and those are organized well and intuitive to use.

How’s the tech? The Hummer EV SUV has wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Our phones connected quickly and easily in our testing. The 14-speaker Bose audio system is decent, but some of our editors expected better sound quality considering the vehicle's price. There are plenty of USB ports and a wireless charger to keep devices charged. There's also a household outlet in the back seat if you need to power something like a laptop or a game console.

GM's Super Cruise highway hands-free driving system is also included. It worked well in our testing and helped reduce the fatigue of keeping this big SUV in its lane for extended stretches. The surround-view camera system gives you clear (and much-appreciated) views of what's around you when parking.

Storage

How’s the storage? The Hummer's front truck provides a usable 11.3 cubic feet of space, but the space looks smaller than it could be, and the power-operated hood takes what seems like a decade to open after you press the button. There's no drain hole, which means you won't be transforming the frunk into an ice chest for tailgating parties, which really should be a standard feature these days. Behind the second row, you'll find 35.9 cubic feet of cargo space, which expands to 81.8 cubic feet with the seats folded. That's OK but the Rivan R1S has more space.

In-cabin storage for smaller items or more delicate cargo is also less plentiful than we'd expect. The available bin space is decent-sized, and there is a sizable space below the center console between the driver and front passenger, but access isn't all that easy. Got small children? The roomy back seat makes car seat installation easier, and the upper and lower seat anchors are easy to find and reach. Towing capacity is 7,500 pounds. That's good enough for most small to midsize trailers owners will want to pull, but know that electric range drops considerably when towing.

Range and Efficiency

How are the range and efficiency? Thanks to its giant battery, the Hummer EV SUV (like the pickup) can cover a lot of distance on a single charge. In the independent Edmunds EV Range Test, our test vehicle made it 325 miles on a full charge, which is more than its EPA-estimated 289 miles of range with the Extreme Off-Road package equipped. That's the good news.

The bad news is that it's woefully inefficient while doing so. In our testing, the Hummer EV SUV consumed 62.6 kWh of electricity for every 100 miles of driving. That's even worse than the 57.8 kWh/100 miles we recorded in the Hummer EV pickup. Just about any other luxury EV you buy is going to be more efficient and cost less to charge over time. Charging on road trips can also take a long time if you're stuck using a low-powered public charger.

Value

Is the HUMMER EV SUV a good value? Looking at the Hummer objectively, its three electric motors and massive battery pack mean there's serious hardware costs from the start. However, the interior materials are definitely more rugged than chic, which makes it feel less worthy of its $100K-plus price tag. But if you see value in its performance and all the off-road capability, plus fun conversation-starting features like the rear-steer CrabWalk and underbody cameras, the cost of the Hummer will feel more justified.

The Hummer EV SUV's warranty mirrors what's offered in other GMC products with a pretty basic three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and an eight-year/100,000 mile battery warranty (which includes roadside towing for anything battery-related). This is less than what Rivian offers, and there's no complimentary fast charging.

Here's where the outlandish design of the Hummer EV SUV finally pays dividends. It's a giant vehicle with giant specs and a giant personality. It gets noticed by other motorists regularly, and thankfully we think the styling is spot-on for what a modern electric Hummer should look like.

Which HUMMER EV SUV does Edmunds recommend?

The entry-level Hummer EV SUV 2X gets our recommendation. This base model is anything but basic and is loaded with features. It has more power than the majority of drivers will ever want and is eligible for many of the same options as the 3X. While the 3X has a huge power advantage, its novelty wears off rather quickly.
