Fold-down midgate expands cargo area to nearly 11 feet
2024 is the first year for the Sierra EV
Overview
GMC has its first electric pickup with the introduction of the 2024 GMC Sierra EV. Though it shares its name with the regular Sierra, it has virtually nothing in common with its gas-powered sibling. Available in a single Denali Edition 1 trim at its introduction, the Sierra EV Denali is mechanically almost identical to the Chevrolet Silverado EV, but with GMC-specific styling and a notably more upscale interior design. With the ability to drive more than 400 miles on a full charge, the Sierra EV Denali promises to be a genuinely useful truck, albeit at an eye-watering price.

EPA Estimated Range
EV batteries lose 1-2% of range per year. Est. range for this car is 374 miles after 8 years.Electric cars typically experience 1-2% of range loss per year with slightly faster degradation over the first 50,000 miles as the car settles into its long term state, according to Recurrent's study of 15,000 EVs.
Estimated range mapThis map is a visual representation of the possible one-way and round-trips by this vehicle (on a full charge) from the geometric center of Chandler, Arizona. The depicted ranges are based on the estimated new vehicle range value provided by the EPA, rounded down to miles for one-way and miles for round-trip. Actual range will vary depending on the condition of this vehicle’s battery pack, how you drive, driving conditions and other factors.

240V Home ChargingEstimated total charging time when using a 240V outlet. This is either a 3-prong or 4-prong outlet used for appliances, for example a clothes dryer.
EV batteries should be kept at 30-80% charged to extend battery life.
8 yrs or 100,000 milesThe federal government requires that EV batteries be warrantied for a minimum of eight years or 100,000 miles. The EV battery warranty includes replacement if your battery capacity drops below a certain percentage of the original capacity.
According to GeoTab’s data, if the observed degradation rates are maintained, the vast majority of batteries will outlast the usable life of the vehicle.

Am I Ready for an EV?
EV ownership works best if you can charge at home (240V outlet) This typically means a 240V home installation, or other places your car is parked for several hours each day. Don't expect a regular household outlet (120V) to suffice.
Adding a home charging system is estimated to cost $1,616 in This is an estimate for your area. Using your address and the answers you provide, Treehouse can provide a more accurate price.

The GMC Sierra EV provides additional utility compared to its electric truck rivals thanks to its midgate. The midgate is a panel, much like a truck's regular tailgate, that you can fold down after folding down the truck's rear seatbacks to open a space between the cab and the cargo. With the midgate and the Sierra EV's configurable tailgate both lowered, you can carry items nearly 11 feet in length, such as a kayak. You can also remove the rear midgate's window for taller items like a couch, or just fold one side if you want to carry a passenger as well as long items.
Competitors to consider
The most obvious alternative to the Sierra EV is its corporate twin, the Chevrolet Silverado EV. The trucks have nearly identical range and capability, and they differ mostly in styling and interior quality. Of the two, we prefer the Sierra because its classier interior is more fitting for such a pricey vehicle. GMC's Hummer EV also shares the same mechanical underpinnings but offers more power and off-road capability. Outside of General Motors there's the Ford F-150 Lightning, which comes in lower-priced trims, as well as the Tesla Cybertruck and the Rivian R1T.
Which Sierra EV does Edmunds recommend?
For 2024, GMC makes picking the Sierra EV easy with only a single trim available: the Denali Edition 1. This introductory version comes in a single color (Thunderstorm Gray) with a black leather interior, along with just about all the features you could hope for. For the 2025 model year, GMC will expand the lineup with less expensive models.

2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 4dr Crew Cab 4WD SB (electric DD)
And I've quite literally had them all. Every EV from Hyundai, Ford, Tesla, Rivian, Audi, etc. With plenty of gas/diesel powered vehicles in there. And lots of trucks. I've got a good amount of experience with vehicles and I have to say, this Sierra EV Denali is easily the best combination of full-size truck practicality, comfort, technology, range, and charging speed.
The air … suspension does a great job of managing rough roads, despite these massive 24" wheels on 35" tall tires. The interior is relatively quiet, road and wind noise are well suppressed. The seats have real leather, which feel and smell great. They are better than current gas trucks, but could have more padding, and massage would be nice at this price point.
I also can't stress the usefulness of rear-wheel steering. While it may sound like a gimmick, it makes parking and maneuvering in tight space a non-issue. It even helps on curvy roads or even slicing through traffic. Basically, it feels like a mid-size truck. Or smaller. It has a tighter turning radius than my R1T.
Real-world range is around 380 miles on a full charge (EPA est 440). And that's driving at TX highway speeds around 80mph. When you do need to charge, lots of EA and EVgo stations around here have no problem holding around 350kW until you get closer to 80%. Basically, I can treat this as I do my ICE trucks. Even in colder weather, which only has a minor impact to range. The heat pump and overall EV engineering are solid. Just decide where I want to stop for restroom and food breaks that happen to have EV charging. You can even use most Tesla stations if you don't mind a bit longer wait to charge.
The infotainment system is pretty good. It's all Google-based, Google maps, much like using an Android phone. I'd still like to see more features added for EV navigation and home screen customization, but it's been super accurate on road trips with calculating range and EV stops.
However, no vehicle is perfect. There are still the usual signs of GM build quality, such as rattles here and there. Which the GMC dealer has been addressing. On the plus side, material quality is much improved as evidence with no creaking. There is no spare tire, just a fix-a-flat kit. And they absolutely need to include a shade for the huge pano roof. While it does a surprisingly good job of blocking heat, sometimes I just don't want the sun in my face. And torque steer at WOT needs to be addressed. Fortunately, I rarely need to do that. It has ample power for passing and merging without even pushing it past 50%.
Overall, I've been extremely please with the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. It looks fantastic, it's way easier to park than any other full-size vehicle, Google tech good enough that I don't miss Android Auto or Carplay, and I can forget about range anxiety. They aren't cheap, but there are some good deals if you shop around. It might be more affordable than you think. Especially when you consider the 205kW battery pack alone would be more than double the cost of the vehicle.
2024 GMC Sierra EV First Look | The Sierra Goes Electric | Interior, Exterior, Horsepower & More!
The 2024 GMC Sierra EV is the latest in GM's onslaught of electric pickups. The Sierra EV shares a platform and many components with its Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Hummer EV siblings but wraps it all up in its own unique package, with distinctive styling inside and out, different power figures, and a more traditional truck look. So, how does it stack up against GM's… other electric trucks, as well as those from Ford and Rivian? And what's so special about it? Edmunds' Brian Wong tells you all about the 2024 GMC Sierra EV in the video above!
The 2024 GMC Sierra EV is a full-size electric truck that offers a more luxurious alternative to the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV. The Sierra EV rides on GM's flexible Ultium platform. It's used for the Silverado EV and GMC Hummer EV electric trucks plus a variety of other upcoming EVs from General Motors.
Though the wrapper is different, the Sierra EV owes its fundamental shape and much of its functionality to the Silverado EV, which went on sale earlier this year. There aren't the same Chevrolet Avalanche-esque extensions hanging off the back of the cabin, but from the beltline down, the trucks look quite similar in shape and proportion. There's a bit more differentiation inside, where the Sierra EV opts for a vertically oriented center display and darker styling themes that befit a vehicle with the Denali badge.
At launch, the Sierra EV will only be offered in a limited-run Denali Edition 1 with a starting price of $99,495 (including destination). The off-road-oriented AT4 and Elevation trims will join the party for the 2025 model year to give Sierra EV buyers more options, with the more commercial-oriented Elevation expected to start a little higher than the Silverado EV WT's base price of around $77,000.
What's powering the Sierra EV?
We don't have full details yet from GMC, but what has been released is impressive. The Sierra EV has dual electric motors that produce, in its Max Power driving mode, an estimated 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque. GMC says the powertrain will scoot the Sierra EV from 0 to 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds.
That's quite rapid for such a large vehicle but does put it behind the Ford F-150 Lightning and four-motor Rivian R1T we've tested. The Lightning did a 4-second sprint to 60 mph at our test track and the Rivian R1T threw down a 3.5-second time of its own — and these were the results for the pre-refresh Rivian. The new tri-motor and revised quad-motor versions are far more potent than the Sierra.
The Sierra EV will offer five distinct drive modes: Standard, Tow/Haul, Off-Road, My Mode (a customizable setting) and Max Power. Towing capacity is rated at 10,000 pounds, but there is no word of any type of max towing package like the one that Chevy says is coming for the Silverado EV, which raises capacity to 20,000 pounds. However, the Sierra EV will have four-wheel steering and the same CrabWalk feature as the Hummer EV. That allows the truck to turn its rear wheels to the same angle as the front wheels so the truck can move diagonally in tight spaces. One-pedal driving on the maximum regenerative braking setting will also be offered.
What about the Sierra's range and charging?
GMC estimates that the Sierra EV, like the Silverado EV, will offer about 440 miles of range on a full charge. GMC did not specify the size of the battery, but we know that the Ultium platform can handle batteries of around 200 kWh of capacity (the Hummer's is just above that) and we'd expect something similar given the Sierra EV's range estimates.
The Ultium platform can handle DC fast-charging power of up to 350 kW. That's the max output that public DC charging currently supports, and GMC says that if you're hooked up to one of these chargers, you can add 100 miles of range in about 10 minutes under optimum conditions.
How's the Sierra EV's interior?
The vehicle we saw was a prototype, so some of the details and materials are subject to change before launch. But at first glance this truck feels like a Denali: lots of dark interior detailing, high-quality leather on each of the seats, and a smattering of chrome highlights so the whole package doesn't feel too Darth Vader-y. A large panoramic glass roof also allows plenty of natural light into the cabin to keep it from looking overly drab.
Below the large center screen is a wireless charging pad and a pair of cupholders, both sitting on movable trays that can split open to reveal a large storage bin between the front seats. There's plenty of room in the cabin for adults to sit in either row — that is when the back seat isn't being folded down to open up the Sierra EV's cargo bed to maximum capacity.
How's the Sierra EV's tech?
As expected, there are plenty of screens and they are large. In front of the driver sits an 11-inch customizable instrument cluster display, with a 14-inch-wide head-up display above that projected onto the windshield. The dashboard's centerpiece is a vertically oriented 16.8-inch display that looks similar in concept to the display found in the Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E, right down to the volume knob that's mounted on the display. The multimedia system will feature GMC's Google built-in integration that allows for the use of Google Maps and its voice assistant natively.
We don't know the full suite of safety features that will be available yet on the Sierra EV, but it will offer 14 different camera views that should help drivers maneuver this large truck in tight spaces. It will also come with Super Cruise, a hands-free driving system that works on 400,000 miles of highways across the U.S. and Canada. The system is also set up to work while towing.
How's the Sierra EV's storage?
You may be wondering how the back seat ties into the Sierra EV's bed and the answer lies in its removable midgate (also shared with the Silverado EV). The midgate is a removable partition between the cabin and the bed, which helps to expand the bed length. This is useful because the Sierra EV's standard bed length is 5 feet 11 inches and the Sierra EV isn't likely to be offered with a smaller cab/longer bed combination that you'll find in other full-size trucks. But with the rear seat folded down and the midgate removed, objects up to about 9 feet in length can be stored. The tailgate also has a small load stop that can be lifted up when the tailgate is down and that stretches things out even more to max out the bed at 130 inches (nearly 11 feet) in length. Larger objects won't be hemmed in securely by the tailgate, but it's a great way to store a surfboard or kayak in the truck's bed without it hanging out over the top.
Edmunds says
While the Sierra EV offers intriguing features and capability, it's yet another full-size electric pickup with a price tag around $100,000, at least to start. There are definitely those looking to go electric but want a smaller form factor, and we're hoping to see more of those vehicles arrive soon.
