What is the Yukon?
The GMC Yukon is a full-size SUV with three available engines and seating for up to nine passengers. Based on the GMC Sierra pickup truck, which is mechanically identical to the Chevrolet Silverado, the Yukon inherits a fair bit of ruggedness and capability from its body-on-frame platform. Fresh off a comprehensive and much-needed redesign in 2021, the Yukon should be due for a styling refresh in 2024.
Spy photos corroborate our hypothesis and show a Yukon with heavily camouflaged front and rear body panels. While it's difficult to discern anything about the new taillights, the headlights look similar to those on the upcoming Sierra EV pickup truck. We don't know if there will be any upgrades to the Yukon's three engines, but we think the 5.3- and 6.2-liter V8s, along with the 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder turbodiesel, are likely to stick around unchanged.
On the tech front, it's not inconceivable the 2024 Yukon could see GM's newest semi-automated driving system added to the option list. Known as Ultra Cruise, it builds on GM's current semi-automated system Super Cruise but will also allow the driver to enjoy somewhat hands-free motoring in the city — not just on select highways like Super Cruise. The same spy photos show various cutouts for sensors and cameras in the Yukon bodywork, but final details will likely only be available just before the 2024 Yukon is revealed.
SUVs similar to the Yukon include the Ford Expedition, the Nissan Armada and the Yukon's mechanical twins, the Chevrolet Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade. All of these SUVs feature tough body-on-frame construction and offer impressive tow limits and plenty of luxury and advanced safety features.
