It may look like a regular CR-V, but the e:FCEV has one of the more technologically advanced powertrains of anything on the road today. That lowercase e stands for "electric"; this CR-V uses an electric motor. And FCEV stands for "fuel cell electric vehicle" and means that, instead of storing energy in a big battery, the e:FCEV generates electricity with a fuel cell that combines oxygen from the air with hydrogen stored in an onboard tank. As a plug-in hybrid, the e:FCEV also has a 17.7-kilowatt-hour battery. Between the fuel cell and the battery's estimated 29 miles of range, the e:FCEV can go a total of 270 miles before refueling.

Edmunds spotlight: Atypical plug-in logic

The CR-V e:FCEV is not the first fuel cell vehicle to be offered in the U.S. It's not even Honda's; previously, it sold the hydrogen-powered Clarity. But it is the first plug-in hybrid fuel cell vehicle, and it flips the usual plug-in hybrid logic on its head. Normally, plug-ins are intended to be driven on electric power until the battery is depleted, and then the gas engine carries the vehicle to its next charging plug. But hydrogen fueling stations are even more rare than public charging stations, and so here, the battery is the backup, giving the e:FCEV driver a 29-mile buffer when the hydrogen tank is empty.

Competitors to consider

The Toyota Mirai is the only other fuel cell vehicle available in the U.S. It has superior range to the e:FCEV: up to 402 miles. But it lacks the CR-V's plug-in battery backup.
