Overview
by the Edmunds Experts
2/16/2024
The 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric kicks off its second generation with a new look, a roomier interior, and an entry-level short-range model for buyers. Outside, the Kona gains a more muscular build with sharper creases and edges, and the EV trend du jour: a front wrap-around accent light strip. There's more rear legroom inside and a better use of center console space and another nod to current tech fashion with a seamless widescreen display made up of dual 12.3-inch screens for the digital gauge cluster and infotainment display. There's also a new model with a smaller battery, nearly 200 miles of range, and a lower price than last year's base model.

EPA Estimated Range
EV batteries lose 1-2% of range per year. Est. range for this car is 170 miles after 8 years.Electric cars typically experience 1-2% of range loss per year with slightly faster degradation over the first 50,000 miles as the car settles into its long term state, according to Recurrent's study of 15,000 EVs.
Estimated range mapThis map is a visual representation of the possible one-way and round-trips by this vehicle (on a full charge) from the geometric center of Denver, Colorado. The depicted ranges are based on the estimated new vehicle range value provided by the EPA, rounded down to miles for one-way and miles for round-trip. Actual range will vary depending on the condition of this vehicle’s battery pack, how you drive, driving conditions and other factors.

240V Home ChargingEstimated total charging time when using a 240V outlet. This is either a 3-prong or 4-prong outlet used for appliances, for example a clothes dryer.
EV batteries should be kept at 30-80% charged to extend battery life.
10 yrs or 100,000 milesThe federal government requires that EV batteries be warrantied for a minimum of eight years or 100,000 miles. The EV battery warranty includes replacement if your battery capacity drops below a certain percentage of the original capacity.
According to GeoTab’s data, if the observed degradation rates are maintained, the vast majority of batteries will outlast the usable life of the vehicle.

Am I Ready for an EV?
EV ownership works best if you can charge at home (240V outlet) This typically means a 240V home installation, or other places your car is parked for several hours each day. Don't expect a regular household outlet (120V) to suffice.
Adding a home charging system is estimated to cost $1,616 in This is an estimate for your area. Using your address and the answers you provide, Treehouse can provide a more accurate price.

When developing the new Kona lineup, Hyundai flipped the script. Instead of shoehorning an electric powertrain where a gas engine should be, Hyundai started with the EV design first, stretching, widening and lengthening the Kona for a larger battery and better ride quality (also to the benefit of the other Kona models powered by four-cylinder gas engines). The expansion also creates more rear legroom (up 3 inches) and about 30% more cargo space behind the rear seat — and even more max capacity when the seats are folded. You'll want it too, because the front trunk space is a mere 0.95 cubic feet. There's a smarter use of interior space, too. The shifter moves to the steering column, opening up the center console for more small-item storage and larger coffee tumblers.
Finally, a new onboard charger promises shorter charging times, shaving a few minutes off the time you'll spend at a DC fast charger but saving you nearly three hours when filling up on a typical Level 2 home charger. The 2024 Kona Electric's Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function will also be a boon to those with active, outdoor lives as it can also charge tools, e-bikes, scooters, lights and other electric accessories. It can even send power back to your home in the event of an outage.
Competitors to consider
The Kona Electric rejoins a growing class of small electric hatchback-crossovers, including the Chevrolet Bolt, Nissan Leaf, Kia Niro EV, Mazda MX-30 and Volkswagen ID.4. The Kona's starting price falls about mid-pack, more than the Leaf and Bolt, less than the Kia and Mazda options. The Niro remains among our favorites for its blend of comfort, agility and features. The Kona and Niro are close mechanical relatives, but the Niro is slightly larger, roomier and pricier. With 197 miles of range, the Kona base trim falls short of the Bolt but surpasses the Leaf and MX-30 base models. And in Edmunds' testing, we've seen the Kona handily exceed its range estimates, so you can expect a bit better results than the spec sheet reveals.
Which Kona Electric does Edmunds recommend?
While the base SE trim comes well equipped with the essentials, including navigation, the dual 12.3-inch displays and blind-spot warning, it's limited by its smaller battery and 197-mile range. This is a great option if you only need an EV for short commutes or local driving. For most buyers, we'd recommend the SEL. It builds on the base trim with heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver's seat and roof rails, plus extra range and more power, all for less than $40,000.

2024 Hyundai Kona Electric SEL 4dr SUV (electric DD)
2025 update after 1/2 year, 7,000 miles:
This winter, with the weather mostly hovering around 40, its range before recharging is not impacted heavily unless I turn on the cabin heat. It has a heat pump which should be more efficient, but using it still lowers the range between charges about 20%. But the seat heater and steering wheel heater are great and use very little power so I … mostly skip the heater and use those on longer trips.
My other peeve is that Hyundai’s Bluelink tracks the vehicle’s location at all times, which is, of course, a privacy concern. And owners are not allowed to opt out of Bluelink or Hyundai will stop their road service warranty.
The steering wheel has very little feel of the road. If the driver looks away from the road for even a second to adjust the radio the car can start to wander. But it handles well enough if one is hypervigilant, but long road trips can be tiring.
And I have discovered the audio is not great, it misses detail in some music. I occasionally catch myself wishing I had splurged for the Limited model for the better audio system alone.
But apart from these mostly minor things, the Kona has shown itself to be a very comfortable and reliable car to drive around in my daily life. Easy to drive and easy to park. Quiet to operate and runs smoothly. It has been a pleasure.
Original review:
We upgrading to the 2024 Kona SEL electric from a 2017 Nissan Leaf. The EV battery is 3 times the size and it shows in a massive improvement in range. The Kona can also regenerate electricity much more aggressively and the heat pump provides much more efficient cooling and heating, both of which enable it to travel just that much further between charges. It all adds up to an electric car that has a similar range to a tank of gas in a conventional car, and one that meets all my needs for commuting and longer day trips.
Unfortunately while the exterior is attractive, the interior of the Kona is nearly all hard plastics. While the seats are comfortable enough, the seat fabric is scratchy and cheap feeling. On the bright side the cabin itself is quiet except for some intrusive noise from different pavements, the visibility is good, and the car feels intuitive and easy to drive.
The EV technology is helpful, especially the four settings for regenerative braking. The backup camera is massive and clear. When backing up, it provides warnings when cars or people are passing behind the car. And there are many, many other safety features that you can learn about elsewhere if you want them.
A huge benefit to the Kona is a square cargo bay. The rear seats go flat which is great for hauling stuff. Unfortunately under the cargo area is a space for a spare tire, but a spare tire is not only not included, but is not even available in our market.
It would be great if replacement EV batteries weren’t 1/2 the price of the car. But with an 8 year warranty I hope to get lots and lots of use from it before the battery is no longer covered. And, most of all, I am really glad those miles will have a much lower carbon footprint than a conventional vehicle.

2024 Hyundai Kona Electric Limited 4dr SUV (electric DD)
I leased the 2024 Kona Electric by trading in my 2013 Ford C-Max Energi PHEV. And like the previous reviewer I took advantage of the manufacturer credit. I love the miles I get. I don't drive very much and 280 plus miles is great charging once or twice a week which is way better than daily. Its not absurdly fast but is at least as fast as my C-Max in EV mode. Ventilated seats all … the safety features, lane keep especially. One pedal driving is nice but you can't leave it in that mode on startup. Same with lane keep which needs to be selected upon startup. Love all the cameras so I can park and backup better. Can't wait to use the heated steering wheel. I put Line-X mats in the front and rear seats and Tux mats in the back. I bought the Tux mats because they make a cover for the rear seatbacks...

2024 Hyundai Kona Electric SEL 4dr SUV (electric DD)
We thought we were getting a Bolt EUV. I had test-driven it and was very impressed, but then GM pulled the plug and we didn't want to wait around for the Equinox....so we test-drove a Kona SEL electric (having previously owned an Ioniq plug-in) and were impressed. We purchased it in February 24' for about $39K, received a $7,500 dealer discount plus an additional $2K from the state (CT). … Not bad. My wife and I both like the car a lot. In retrospect, its larger exterior, interior and driver visibility suits us better than the Bolt EUV. We really have no complaints - solid, roomy, quiet, pretty quick. We installed a home charger ($1,800 total), but got $1K back from our utility and have a 30% Fed credit to apply next year. To our surprise, the battery is currently charging between 305 and 330 miles overnight (as high as 347!). The first month or two it topped out at ~ 275. Anyway, we got a good deal and are very comfortable with this car.
Loving it so far

Decided to make the jump to electric - have a 2022 Tucson PHEV and had a 2023 Elantra Hybrid, traded in the Elantra for the Kona. Went with the Limited trim, black exterior and sage green interior. Very zippy, comfortable, and tons of amenities. Debated getting a used Kona, but with current cash back from Hyundai, it made sense to go new, and it’s bigger and more comfortable than the … previous model. Will be using this primarily for commuting; my employer offers free Chargepoint charging, which helps a ton.
The Cheapest EVs You Can Buy Today | Most Affordable Electric Cars & SUVs for 2024
While electric vehicles, in general, remain pricier than their internal combustion-engine counterparts, there are still a decent number of affordable models to choose from — some of which may surprise you. In this video, Edmunds’ Nick Yekikian goes through the cheapest EVs currently available!
Even though it received a recent styling update and had a sporty N model added to the lineup, the Hyundai Kona is set for an upcoming full redesign. The automaker just pulled the wraps off the U.S.-bound version of the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric at this year's New York International Auto Show, and the result is nothing short of transformative.
On the outside, the upcoming Kona features the same SUV-like profile as the current model. But there's a lot more going on up front (in a good way), giving the Kona a distinctive face. This is especially true of the purely electric model, which has a unique pixelated take on the new full-width LED light bar and a lower bumper treatment that differentiates it from not only the other Konas but also its amorphous predecessor. Hyundai says the new Kona grows nearly 6 inches in overall length, with 2.3 inches of that between the wheelbase. This translates to a few more inches in legroom — a welcome addition since the current model is a little cramped in the rear. It's worth noting that while both the 2024 Kona and Kona Electric are a bit roomier than the respective outgoing models, the standard version has a bit more interior space than the EV (likely a product of the location of the battery pack and/or motor).
What's under the Kona Electric's hood?
The Kona Electric adds a short-range variant for the 2024 model year. Total capacity is 48.6 kWh, which is honestly pretty small for a new electric vehicle. To wit, Hyundai says this pack provides up to 197 miles of range, which would theoretically place this version of the Kona Electric near the bottom of our list of EVs with the worst range. The pack is paired to a single electric motor up front that makes a modest 133 horsepower and 188 lb-ft of torque. It won't be the most awesome electric vehicle on the market, but the presumably lower price tag should open up EV ownership to more cost-conscious buyers.
The longer-range Kona Electric utilizes a familiar powertrain. A 64.8-kWh pack returns to provide juice for a more potent electric motor, which develops 201 hp and 188 lb-ft. Eagle-eyed Kona Electric aficionados will note that this is more than 100 lb-ft of torque less than last year's model. As such, we don't expect the new Kona Electric to come close to the blistering 6.6-second 0-60 mph figure achieved by its predecessor. Nuking performance has done little to benefit the range, as the new model is projected to offer 260 miles of range — just 2 miles better than the 2023 Kona Electric.
Since some versions of the Kona Electric do feature a robust 400-volt charging system, it refills fairly quickly when plugged into a DC fast charger. Hyundai says the Kona Electric can charge from 10% to 80% capacity in a rapid 43 minutes. However, the 400-volt system is noted as "available" for the Kona Electric, which makes us believe that lower-priced versions may do with a less potent rail that caps the maximum charging rate. The Kona Electric also allows for bidirectional charging at rates of up to 1.7 kWh, in case you need to provide power to equipment on the road. Camping in a Kona? It's now a possibility.
How's the Kona Electric's interior?
The new Kona's sleek, modern interior looks more cohesive than the previous model. The center console has been trimmed down, and relocating the transmission selection buttons to a stalk behind the steering wheel frees up space for a large storage area. Perfect for Big Gulps or just stashing a lot of gear. We dig the Kona's new steering wheel (which it appears to share with the heavily refreshed 2024 Sonata), and the front passenger enjoys extra utility thanks to a storage shelf on the dash. Thoughtful touches like ambient lighting strips sprinkled throughout the cabin ensure the interior looks as tech-forward as the exterior.
Speaking of which, the centerpiece of the Kona's cabin is undoubtedly the wide panel display that houses twin 12.3-inch displays. The display touchscreen is loaded with Hyundai's newest infotainment system, which supports over-the-air updates to keep the software current. New features include Digital Key 2 Touch (allowing owners to use their smartphone as a vehicle key), a surround-view parking camera and a Bose premium audio system.
Also on deck are additional advanced safety systems. A remote parking system (accessed via the key fob), a blind-spot camera, lane centering assistance, and front cross-traffic warning all join the list of features now available on the Kona. They join existing aids that include forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control and a safe-exit alert system. Many of these aren't available on competitors at all. If you prioritize advanced driving aids above all else, you might want to start your small SUV search with the Kona.
Edmunds says
The redesigned 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric aims to improve upon what was already one of our favorite small SUVs. It's a shame the powertrains were untouched or degraded since other aspects of this little crossover seem impossible to resist.
