What is the Tucson?
The current Hyundai Tucson is the largest of Hyundai's three small SUVs, and the one that competes most directly in the compact crossover segment. Since this generation was introduced in 2016, we've awarded the Tucson high marks for its excellent infotainment system, comfortable ride, and emphasis on value. But there's always room for improvement, and we hope Hyundai addresses some of the Tucson's most pressing concerns for its upcoming redesign.
We believe the Tucson will be redesigned for the 2021 model year. On our wish list are more rear legroom, a larger cargo area and a more modern engine. Our last tester, with the uprated 2.4-liter engine, fell short of fuel economy estimates and posted slower acceleration times than rivals.
While the current Hyundai Tucson is one of our favorite small crossovers, there are a few rivals that score slightly higher. The Honda CR-V has far more cabin and cargo space, and we're huge fans of its turbocharged engine. The Mazda CX-5 is roughly the same size as the Tucson, and its sporting character makes it a joy to drive.
