Overview
With the discontinuation of the Renegade and Cherokee in 2023, the Compass is now Jeep's smallest and most affordable SUV. However, the little Jeep is one of the most expensive in its class even though it's one of the oldest models. The Compass packs a strong engine, all-wheel drive and a roomy interior, but it struggles to compete against its more modern rivals. If you plan on hitting off-road trails, though, the Trailhawk model is very capable. Jeep dropped the Latitude Lux trim for 2025 and gave the Latitude trim heated seats, a heated steering wheel and remote engine start.

If you're considering a Compass, it's worth test-driving one, but before you sign any paperwork we recommend checking out a few of its rivals first. The Compass isn't that competitive anymore because it hasn't been redesigned since 2017, and it's relatively pricey. All of its rivals are newer and offer superior tech, more comfort, better fuel efficiency and more. So unless you're getting a killer deal, you should opt for another subcompact SUV that likely has more to offer at a lower price. However, the rugged Trailhawk model is an exception if you're an off-road enthusiast — or just like off-road-themed SUVs.
Competitors to consider
The Compass has many rivals to consider including two of our favorites, the sizable Volkswagen Taos and the tech-forward Chevrolet Trailblazer. The Mazda CX-30 is smaller but sportier and boasts a premium interior. The recently redesigned Hyundai Kona is another compelling option, and if you like little off-roaders, don't forget about the recently redesigned Subaru Crosstrek, especially the rugged Wilderness model. How does the Compass drive? The Jeep Compass' standard engine is a step up for the class. Our test model accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 8.3 seconds, which makes the Compass quicker than most other extra-small SUVs. Unfortunately, that capable engine is connected to a transmission that's eager to upshift and lazy on downshifts, making the car feel less powerful in real-world driving than it actually is.
The Compass isn't at home on curvy roads either. There's a lot of body roll, so it seldom feels settled when you're driving around corners. The brakes can feel grabby during low-speed maneuvers, and our as-tested 60-0 mph stopping distance was longer than we'd expect from a vehicle that's not wearing off-road tires.
The good news is that the Compass is a good choice if you plan on off-roading: Opt for the Trailhawk trim and you get more trail-going capability than pretty much anything in the class other than the Subaru Crosstrek.

How comfortable is the Compass? While the ride quality is surprisingly good, the Compass falls short when it comes to all-day comfort. The front seat cushions are soft but don't offer a lot of support, and the front head restraints are tilted too far forward. Especially for taller drivers, they can push your head forward uncomfortably. The ride is firm enough that you feel road imperfections, but the suspension soaks up larger bumps and takes the edge off potholes impressively well.
While the climate system regulates cabin temperature well, the fan can get very loud, especially in such a small vehicle. But that noise won't be lonely in the Compass: There's near constant engine noise, and on the freeway there's plenty of wind and road noise. You'll likely be turning the volume up on your podcasts.

How’s the interior? We like that the Compass is roomier than many smaller subcompact SUVs. Front passengers get generous headroom and legroom. There's also lots of rear legroom, though rear headroom is lackluster. Getting in and out can also be problematic because of the squattish nature of the door openings.
Another issue is that the Compass doesn't really make driving easy. The placement of the different controls can be plain confusing. The driver aid controls are next to the infotainment screen, for instance, and the infotainment controls are farther down on the center stack, mixed in with the climate controls. Some controls are only accessible through the touchscreen, which can be frustrating, and the driver information interface has a somewhat convoluted menu structure.
Visibility is subpar because the thick pillars, high beltline and square hood make it more difficult than it should be to judge the position of such a relatively small vehicle. The optional surround-view camera helps a lot.

How’s the tech? Our test vehicle's 10.1-inch touchscreen was impressively large and sharp, but at the same time it could be laggy and unresponsive. (We even encountered the occasional loading screen.) It was also saddled with an interface that's not the easiest to learn or navigate. A lot of controls were buried multiple touches deep, and the voice commands haven't expanded their functionality to compensate.
On the upside, the configurable home screen is particularly useful in this car, to save you digging through menus for your commonly used commands. The wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration works smoothly too.

How’s the storage? Compare the Compass to subcompacts and you'll be pleased: It's got one of the biggest cargo areas — 27.2 cubic feet behind the second row. But small-item storage in the cabin is not as good. The center console is small and the narrow door pockets will only fit small water bottles. Compare the Compass to similarly priced compact SUVs such as the Honda CR-V, and you'll be disappointed: Compact SUVs just have more storage space and better small-item storage.
There's a decent amount of space in the second row to fit child car seats, but the lower anchors are buried between the cushions and the top anchors are almost down in the trunk's false floor. The Compass doesn't make it as easy to install a car seat as a lot of competitors.

How’s the fuel economy? The Compass' EPA-estimated fuel economy of 27 mpg in combined driving is a bit below average for vehicles this size. On our mixed-driving test route, our test Compass managed only a little over 25 mpg, suggesting that your driving habits can dramatically impact the efficiency of the turbocharged engine.

Is the Compass a good value? The Compass is a subcompact SUV with a compact SUV price. That means you pay the same price for less space, less utility and less refinement. We appreciate the punchy turbocharged engine and standard AWD, but beyond that the Compass doesn't feel like a strong value considering what else the money can get you — like a Mazda CX-50 or Honda CR-V (or Subaru Forester for the outdoor crowd).
Most interior touchpoints in our test vehicle had a soft-touch treatment, but in general thin-feeling plastics abound. We didn't notice any rattles or creaks in our test vehicle, but many interior trim pieces flexed in a way that doesn't make the interior feel as solid as we'd like.
Warranty coverage is average, with three-year/36,000-mile basic and five-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage. Roadside assistance is good for five years/60,000 miles, which is nice since some competitors only offer it for the length of the basic warranty.

The Compass is aiming for "baby Grand Cherokee," but it's the last-gen Grand Cherokee and not the nice new one. Beyond the general proportions of the body, there's nothing particularly Jeep-like about the Compass. Take the logo off the steering wheel, and the whole thing feels pretty generic from the inside. At least if you get the Trailhawk trim, there's a bit more of that Jeep sauce and more potential for some off-road adventuring. Whether it's worth the price you'll pay is another question.
Which Compass does Edmunds recommend?
The Latitude trim is our suggestion because it offers ample value and is available with a few optional packages, unlike the base Sport trim, which doesn't offer any packages. On top of the Sport's features, the Latitude adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, remote engine start and upgraded upholstery. We recommend getting the Convenience Group package for additional features or the Driver Assistance Group package for more advanced driver aids.

2023 Jeep Compass Latitude Lux 4dr SUV 4WD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
I am glad I didn't go by "expert" review, test drove and took this car! I had 2021 Compass leased and received promotional offer from dealer to turn it it 5 months in advance with no penalty, if I lease newer Jeep. I am so happy that I took the offer! This newer Compass is such an improvement compared to 2021 model. Engine is a lot more powerful, I drove 100 mph in a short stretch of … remote highway, and I didn't even feel the speed. Transmission shifts just fine, in fact it is much better than the older Compass. I don't know what car was tested by review writers who complain of quick shift to upper gear, may be they drove defective models, or need the electronic adjustment of transmission. I always felt the 2021 Compass was too sluggish and had to sometimes switch to 'manual' mode to keep it in lower gear long enough before shifting. This newer Jeep has no such issue! It will shift slow if you push accelerator, literally telling car to 'accelerate'. Now, if you touch gas pedal too slightly then it will read this as your desire to save on gas and upshift earlier, but it's UP TO YOU how you want it to go. So, you have a control and the car is very responsive. I like the large infotainment screen, which isn't confusing at all. It took me less than a minute to get used to it and intuitively figure how to use it. Interior materials are top notch. I have a Lux with leather seats, with optional panoramic sunroof, Alpine sound system with 9 speakers. LED lights, automatic high-beams, wireless Carplay, automatic collision warnings and breaks, blind-spot detection, this car has everything to make a comfortable and safe ride. Don't listen to 'expert' reviews, take it for a test drive, compare to other compact SUV's and make your own decision! I would highly recommend it to my friends and relatives.

It has all the bells and whistles and definitely has some spunk. The customizable dashboard panel is very handy. The ventilated seats for summer are a must have!

2023 Jeep Compass Latitude 4dr SUV 4WD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
Bought my 2023 Compass Latitude in July of 2023 after the transmission died on my 2017 Grand Cherokee. To date the Compass has just under 7000 miles on it and has been in for service 6 times due to battery light being on. After being told I don’t drive it enough for the battery to recharge and that it was caused by the aftermarket devices ( usb cord for my phone) they finally found … gasket material between the grounding strap located by battery and frame of the car. I just got the car back because the battery light was on again and this time it was a defect in the battery cable on the negative terminal.
I have reported it to FCA and they will not cover it under lemon law. At this point I am hoping someone will steal the car. Sorry I bought a Jeep.
