Overview

It's been three decades since Jeep made an SUV called the Wagoneer. Today, the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer offers a nod to that earlier era when the big Jeep was a go-to choice for outdoor, adventuring families thanks to its massive cabin space, advanced (for the time) all-wheel-drive system, and signature faux wood paneling on the doors and fenders.

Today's Wagoneer is nearly 30 inches longer than its predecessor, and it puts that space to use with a roomy third row of seats that allow the Wagoneer to accommodate up to eight passengers. Only a handful of today's big family SUVs use a truck-like platform underneath the body, with the Wagoneer utilizing a modified Ram pickup design for its underpinnings. This helps give the Wagoneer impressive towing and hauling capability — it can tow up to 10,000 pounds — as well as rugged frame strength for genuine off-road adventures.
Then again, this is not the Jeep for challenging deeply rutted, boulder-strewn trails. While it offers a version of Jeep's legendary four-wheel-drive systems, the Wagoneer's length and long rear end preclude it from serious off-roading (though we fully expect some Wagoneer owners will prove us wrong). It can still get you deeper into the backcountry than probably any of its rivals, but the Wagoneer's focus is on family-oriented on-road comfort.
With high-quality interior materials, advanced infotainment, and finer details such as power-reclining third-row seats, active noise cancellation and ambient cabin lighting, the Wagoneer is a proper highway cocoon. If you want even more elegant levels of luxury, look to the longer, more powerful Grand Wagoneer, reviewed separately.
The Wagoneer's 5.7-liter V8 keeps plenty of power on tap for both towing and unburdened highway acceleration. The engine even uses a mild electric assist system that handles some of the engine's more menial tasks (ignition, initial surge of acceleration from a stop), although it doesn't make the Wagoneer much more efficient than its rivals. At 18 mpg combined (16 city/22 highway), the big Jeep is only average.
Jeep's return to the three-row SUV fold — its last three-row was the dismal Commander model — is great news for anyone seeking a large family SUV with enough power and space to haul the family and recreational toys. The Jeep offers a new alternative to established names in the segment — Chevrolet Suburban, Ford Expedition — as well as fancier models like the BMX X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS. Keep in mind, Wagoneer pricing is closer to those luxury models, so consider your options carefully.
2022 Jeep Wagoneer trim level differences
The Jeep Wagoneer is a full-size three-row SUV that can accommodate up to eight passengers. It is available in three trim levels: Series I, Series II and Series III. All trims come with a 5.7-liter V8 engine (392 horsepower, 404 lb-ft of torque) joined to an eight-speed automatic transmission with eTorque mild hybrid technology. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel-drive is optional.
Which Wagoneer trim does Edmunds recommend?
About $5,000 separates the Series II and Series III trim levels, and unless an air suspension or more off-road-specific hardware interests you, we think the Series II with the optional Convenience package is the way to go. It gets you many of the same features as the Series III but for a few thousand dollars less.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer Series II 4dr SUV (5.7L 8cyl gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
Two weeks and 2 days old. Being towed to a dealer for the 3rd time.
Common electrical drain issue but unknown cause leading to inability to fix. Dealers have no loaners and I'm stranded again with my kids on the side of the road.
The vehicle is all electronic so it's super difficult to open and even jump start.
Beautiful vehicle but can't be relied upon.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer Series III 4dr SUV (5.7L 8cyl gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
I should have known when the battery was dead when I wanted to test drive it that I should walk away. I bought it and 2 days later wouldn't drive and was towed back to the dealership. Their promises for special customer service are all lies. I can't even get my Wagoneer case manager to call me back after 3 weeks since opening my case. Many other computer and windshield and mirror … distortion problems have continued from there. One minute something eorks, the next minute it is broken and this happens every day. Now after reading all the complaints online and talking to mechanics in numerous dealerships, its a serious wide spread problem with these cars. About to go in the shop for the 2nd time in less than a month. Don't waste your money. Buy a Ford Expedition or Lincoln Navigator.
Jeep is not ready to be a luxury vehichle brand.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer Series III 4dr SUV 4WD (5.7L 8cyl gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
I have mixed feelings about the actual vehicle. I currently have 14 items that need to be addressed. Most are technology-related and could probably be fixed or addressed with over-the-air software updates. I am not aware of any updates available. The more significant problem is the lack of customer support and service to fix these items. "The Wagoneer Experience" has been very … frustrating. They don't understand the level of service required and expected for customers that purchase 100K+ vehicles. Loaners are included in the "experience," except they don't have any available. Service Managers don't call you back because they have no solutions. Dealer surveys are not responded to because they don't have any answers. Even my interaction with Wagoneer Services has been disappointing. If you are looking for the luxury experience, skip Jeep and the Grand Wagoneer.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer Series II 4dr SUV 4WD (5.7L 8cyl gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
This 1st generation truck is fraught with SAFETY problems in addition to convenience problems. I bought my 2022 wagoneer 6 months ago. It has 12 pages of work history and has been in the shop 30 days with no end in site of issues to be corrected—- the most concerning vehicle fails to start, steering locks up and vehicle gets stuck in 4 wheel drive. This doesn’t even start to address the … heated and cooling seat issues, the infotainment system repeated resets, the preset resets and the windshield replacement. Steer clear if your lemoneer will let your steer….
