Overview
The 2025 Kia Niro is a small hybrid hatchback-meets-crossover that is basically in a class of two. Its only direct competitor is the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, and even that's a bit of a stretch since the Toyota is definitely more of a crossover SUV than a straight-up hatchback. There's also an all-electric version of the Niro, which we review separately. The Niro's small size makes it a compelling choice for shoppers who want a little more utility than a compact sedan but don't want or need the full utility of a bigger SUV or even available all-wheel drive. The Niro is not expected to receive any major changes for 2025 since it's just a couple of years removed from the start of its second generation.
Edmunds spotlight: Spacious and economical
The 2025 Kia Niro is about the same size as the Corolla Cross Hybrid, with a smidge more cargo space and even better fuel economy. The Niro gets an EPA-estimated 53 mpg in some trims, but it comes at the expense of power. The four-cylinder engine is quite weak, which saps the Niro of some of its fun-to-drive qualities, especially considering the Corolla Cross Hybrid is relatively fleet-footed. But when driven conservatively, the Niro can deliver more than 500 miles on a single tank of gas.
Competitors to consider
The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is the Niro's only direct competitor. The Corolla Cross gets slightly lower fuel economy (42 mpg combined) than the Niro (49 mpg combined) but it comes standard with all-wheel drive, which isn't available on the Kia. You might also consider the Edmunds Top Rated Car, the sleekly styled Toyota Prius, or the Edmunds Top Rated SUV, the Kia Sportage Hybrid.
