Overview
The 2024 Range Rover Velar is a small luxury SUV and the second smallest model in the Range Rover lineup. Slotting between the compact Evoque and the larger Range Rover Sport, the Velar has been a stylish entry in the luxury segment since its debut for the 2018 model year. More recently, the Velar has been feeling a bit dated compared to newer and less expensive SUVs from rivals like BMW, Mercedes and Genesis. For 2024, Range Rover is giving the Velar a number of updates that draw from some of the automaker's newer models, though the changes fall far short of a redesign.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2024 Land Rover Range Rover Velar P250 S 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.76 per gallon for premium unleaded in Washington.
Edmunds spotlight: Improved for 2024 but not all-new
The updates for 2024 may be few in number, but they are generally an improvement. On the outside, the Velar gets revised front and rear styling with new headlights, a new grille and tweaked bumpers. The design was clearly drawn from the full-size Range Rover, though as a whole it still looks mostly the same as before. The new infotainment system is also pulled from the flagship Range Rover and is snappier to use and looks more modern than before. That said, we're not thrilled with the decision to remove things like temperature control and volume knobs in favor of buttons and sliders on a touchscreen. We also wish Range Rover had spent some time revising the suspension tuning — the ride can feel a bit bouncy, even with the optional air suspension. The big Range Rover doesn't ride like this, and that makes the Velar feel like less of a Range Rover than it ought to be.
Competitors to consider
Walk into any luxury dealer's showroom and you're likely to find a model that goes head-to-head with the Velar. Some of Edmunds' favorite small luxury SUVs include the Acura RDX, BMW X3, Genesis GV70 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. The Range Rover offers more off-road capability and more cargo space than most rivals, but the Velar's high price is a drawback considering the competition offers similar features and luxury appointments for less. If you do like the Velar but don't necessarily need the extra space, the smaller Range Rover Evoque hits all the same notes as the Velar but in a more compact and more affordable package.
Which Range Rover Velar does Edmunds recommend?
The Velar is available in a few flavors, and we suggest going with the midlevel Dynamic SE trim. It's not much more expensive than the base trim, and it's the only Velar trim available with either a four- or six-cylinder powertrain. If it were our vehicle, we'd spring for the optional Technology Pack and Dynamic Handling Pack.
Save as much as $5,998 with Edmunds Click on the trim you’re interested in to see what Edmunds suggests you should pay to get a good deal. Savings vary by trim; $5,998 refers to estimated savings off of MSRP for the P400 Dynamic SE trim.

2019 Land Rover Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic SE 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl S/C 8A)
Unfortunately, since the time I bought this car (end of September 2018) I had many issues with my new Land Rover Velar 2019. First issues were mostly electrical (screen not working, error messages while being stopped at a red light, back camera not working, etc. I took the car in two opportunities and they explained these cars usually need software updates. I thought I should not waste … my time taking the car to the dealer but did it…. I also had a weird noise with the breaks. They had to change them. Then I had to take the car for the Annual Service. They checked everything and in less than a month, my engine light was on! Took the car AGAIN and they said it was another engine software (not sure why no one update this when I took the car for my annual service?). But after taking the car 2 times, in less than a month my engine light went on AGAIN!! I was so upset and frustrated. The dealer suggested me that I contact Land Rover Customer Service for a Re-Purchase, as it’s obvious to me I have a defective car… After talking to someone for 38 minutes, she asked me many questions about my car, even if I have already paid for the car which we did, she simply said my case didn’t apply for re-purchase. She didn’t explain why or what was the criteria. Her only “solution” was for me to keep taking my car to the dealer. What type of solution is this? I asked to talk to her supervisor. She said he would call in the next 5 hours which he didn’t. He called passed the 5 hours and left a message saying I should follow this with the customer service representative, like ignoring my request of talking to him….
I’m EXTREMELY DISSAPOINTED WITH LAND ROVER CUSTOMER SERVICE. My advice is: if you want a car that works and is reliable, PLEASE don’t buy this car, it’s gorgeous but it’s not reliable and customer service will not help you at all. They will just send you to the dealer and you will waste your time and money taking the car for service many times.
Worst vehicle I have ever owned!!!!! DON'T BUY IT!

2019 Land Rover Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic SE 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
My 2019 Velar R has been plagued with issues from the day I drove it off the lot. It was in service the next day! The infotanement system which is also the heating, air, defrost controls is plagued with issues. Many times it goes completely black. You have to shut the vehicle off to get it to reboot. This also happens when driving & the interface with Apple I-phone is terrible. … They say you need a Apple cord. It does not help. It is distracting when driving because it takes your attention off the road putting you in danger of an accident. Transmission problems on-going from date of purchase. The worst...I put it in park and was behind the vehicle, it shifted into reverse and almost ran us over. I had to rush into the vehicle and shift it back into park and shut the vehicle off. The the transmission knob flashes yellow and you cannot get the vehicle to go over 30 mph. When you applly the gas it slows way down... one of these times it was a fuel pump. Other times when the vehicle shuts off when you stop it will not go back into gear. When i'm at a stop light I have to shut the vehicle off and restart to get it to go into gear. This has happened constatntly since the day I got it. NOT FIXED! Then there is the issue with coolant fan revving constantly. I have had it in for this everytime when I took it in for other issues. Over a year into the lease it had a recall for this but is now doiing it again! The lane change assist, when on a curved fwy tries very hard to push you into the other lane because it does not know the road is curved. It is a fight to keep the vehicle in the lane. tailgate foot swipe to open does not work 80% of the time! The Turbo lag is the worst of any car I have ever driven! Terrible engine! The Land Rover Discovery has better pick-up than the Velar. I have 15,000 miles on the vehicle and it has been in for service probably 25 times! I have asked Land Rover ot buy the vehicle back. They say it doesn't qualify. I am filing a "Lemon Law" case againt Land Rover/Range Rover. Biggest issue is it is extremely unsafe!!!

2019 Land Rover Range Rover Velar 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
If your looking for a mid size luxury SUV then you should at least consider the Range Rover Velar. This is my first Land Rover and I'm quite impressed with the quality and workmanship of this vehicle. Although they don't come cheap, I think that you will find the technology very rewarding and enjoyable. The ride is wonderful and the 2.0 liter turbo is very responsive and provides very … good fuel economy. The age old concern is Land Rover reliability but I'll hope for the best in a second year model and cross that bridge when it comes but for now I'm very impressed with my Range Rover Velar.
Update to my first review still finds my Velar with no issues. The car continues to be a fun car to drive and even more so now that I’ve had time to figure out more of the technological features. Great vehicle and very satisfied with my purchase.
Update to my purchase- After 15,000 miles my vehicle is still a joy to drive. No buyers remorse at all.
Update after 2 years of ownership- had an issue with the excessive fan noise relating to the cooling system but that was corrected under warranty. Other than that everything has worked as designed and the cat still looks like it could be sold as new. Very well built vehicle with quality materials.
Update of review after 36,000 miles has the vehicle still in like new condition but have experienced continuous problems pertaining to the cooling systems. Local dealership is very slow to correct problems under warranty which is very annoying. The battery died way before it should have and it is a battery replacement that is under warranty but can only come from Land Rover which is also very annoying. I would applaud the Velar as a wonderful driving SUV with quality workmanship but expect to make return trips to the dealership for issues with reliability.
Troublesome 😩

2019 Land Rover Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic SE 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl S/C 8A)
Brought the 2019 version, been at dealer shop 3 times already. I can only said advance design with lots of pre-mature technology.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2024 Land Rover Range Rover Velar, so we've included reviews for other years of the Range Rover Velar since its last redesign.
Since 2018, the Range Rover Velar has been the stylish but practical choice in Land Rover's lineup. It slots between the compact but pretty dismal Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport — which is a midsize SUV like the Velar, but with a boxier, more utilitarian design.
The Velar is getting on in its years, but LR isn't letting its fashion-forward crossover wither on the vine. In fact, the 2024 Land Rover Range Rover Velar is refreshed with a restyled grille and bumpers, redesigned headlights, and new seats and upholstery. It's also the first vehicle in Land Rover's lineup with the next-generation Pivi Pro infotainment system. Here's a full list of updates.
What's under the Range Rover Velar's hood?
The Velar's powertrain lineup is slimmed down this year, but that's not necessarily a bad thing if you wanted the more potent six-cylinder. But we get ahead of ourselves.
Standard on the Velar P250 S and P250 Dynamic SE is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 247 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. Last year's midlevel engine upgrade is gone, meaning that buyers who want a bit more power get the full 395 hp and 405 lb-ft offered by the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with mild hybrid assist. That powertrain comes on the P400 Dynamic SE and P400 Dynamic HSE models and reduces the Velar's estimated 0-60 mph time from 7.1 seconds with the four-cylinder to 5.2 seconds with the inline-six.
How's the Range Rover Velar's interior?
The Velar might not offer the cavernous interior of other midsize SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLE or BMW X5, but it's still roomy for four adults. We also find the ride to be quite plush, and we like the high-quality materials and the comfort and support provided by the pre-refresh seats.
Why do we make the distinction about the seats? The 2024 Range Rover Velar will have new seat designs, along with new leather options, if you're so inclined. You can still opt for a wool-blend textile upholstery — an intriguing option for an animal-free interior since many competitors go the synthetic leather route.
How's the Range Rover Velar's tech?
Perhaps taking inspiration from the EV trend toward minimalism, the refreshed Velar's interior is less fussy than it used to be. The lower touchscreen that governed climate controls is gone, as is the wide but narrow upper screen. A new tablet-style 11.4-inch touchscreen replaces both, and its placement off the dash moves it a little closer to the driver. The newest version of Land Rover's Pivi Pro infotainment system debuts on the refreshed Velar and the automaker promises it's easier to use. The automaker says that 80% of tasks can be performed with one to two taps of the screen.
Edmunds says
One of our biggest issues with the Range Rover Velar is with the response and functionality of the infotainment system, and we're hopeful that the 2024 refresh solves the most pressing problems.
