Overview

As the most popular Lexus model in America, the previous-generation RX midsize crossover SUV apparently satisfied the luxury cravings of many people despite a handful of sometimes glaring flaws. Now, a redesigned fifth-generation 2023 Lexus RX attempts to sustain and build upon that success, so it is comfortingly similar to yet substantially different from the old RX.

Styling is a subjective matter, so as is often the case with Lexus models, if you like the way it looks, then chances are you'll like most everything else about the new 2023 RX. That assessment extends to the RX 350h, which is one of two models to replace the previous RX 450h. (The other is the RX 450h+, a new plug-in hybrid model arriving midyear, according to Lexus.)
The RX 350h is a conventional — rather than a plug-in — hybrid. Unlike the V6-based RX 450h from last year, the 2023 RX 350h employs a four-cylinder engine, improving fuel economy while retaining the off-the-line responsiveness supplied by the electric assist motors. Better yet, based on the automaker's claims, acceleration remains on par with the old RX 450h.
As part of the redesign, the previous-generation RX 450h L with its cramped third-row seat is gone, leaving two rows of seats for up to five people in the new RX 350h. If you believe the rumor mill, a proper three-row Lexus crossover SUV is coming soon, likely based on the upcoming Toyota Grand Highlander. Hybrid power is a good bet, though the new, larger Lexus three-row crossover will probably use the more powerful drivetrain offered in the new RX 500h F Sport Performance model (reviewed separately).
As for the 2023 RX 350h, next-generation infotainment, convenience and driver assist technologies debut, including a cloud-based navigation and natural voice recognition system and a hands-free traffic jam assistant for when you're crawling along at low speeds in commuter traffic. With its comfortable front and roomy rear seats, and more cargo space than before, the new RX should appeal to the luxury SUV buyers that have made it successful in the past.
And while the new RX 350 faces several rivals, the RX 350h is in a class of one. The only hybrid-powered alternative in the luxury two-row SUV segment is the BMW X5 xDrive45e, and it's a plug-in model. You might also cross-shop the RX 350h with the smaller Audi Q5 TFSI 55 e, Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring and Volvo XC60 Recharge, three additional plug-in hybrid alternatives all in the compact luxury SUV segment.
2023 Lexus RX 350h trim level differences
Every 2023 Lexus RX 350h has a hybrid powertrain based on a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (246 horsepower, 233 lb-ft torque). It uses a continuously variable automatic transmission and employs a small electric motor at the rear wheels to create an electronic all-wheel-drive system.
Which RX 350h trim does Edmunds recommend?
Our recommendation for the new 2023 Lexus RX 350h is the Premium+ AWD, which provides the best blend of luxury, efficiency, performance, technology and value. Better yet, it doesn't cost more than the standard RX 350 with all-wheel drive, so the hybrid powertrain doesn't command a price premium.

Amazing Road Trip Car

2023 Lexus RX 350h Luxury 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)
Due to timing finallying landing one of these amazing cars, we ended up immediately on a 1,000 mile round trip to attend a wedding. What a pleasure to drive and I quickly adapted to the driver assist features that maintained speed and distance on the highway and kept the car centered in the lane with no input by the driver except for a light touch of the steering wheel every 15 seconds … or so just to make sure you are paying attention. Gas mileage was 34-36 on the highway and we are seeing 35-37 in the city. The optional "traffic jam assist" automatically engages and starts, stops and steers the car to keep up with the stop and go traffic. Super quiet, super comfortable, beautiful and easy to use touchscreen, responsive voice controls this and more makes this a stress reducing road car. Hard to find at your dealership, we were fortunate to find one that was under allocation to the dealer before someone else shatched it up. Now at about 3,000 on the odometer, we are loving this vehicle.
Great vehicle for our needs.

2023 Lexus RX 350h Premium Plus 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)
We were looking for a nice luxury vehicle that didn't kill us at the pump. This is it. We opted for the Premium Plus because we did not want low profile tires/wheels. They are no good for California roads. Our other car lowpro tires/wheels are damaged. We also didn't want to pay for option we will never use. Nonetheless, the premium plus came with leather interior, panoramic roof, … digital rearview mirror, rear kick sensor, heated steering wheel, colored interior lighting, facial recognition for driver settings and driving assist, vented front seats. Nuff said. It has more that we need. The hybrid system seems to work flawlessly. We have no complaints. It does not have the power of the other engines but has enough. We don't go racing around. My other vehicle is a 19 4Runner TRD ORP and is very slow compared to this. I am very happy with this purchase.
After six month of ownership and about 5k miles, The MPG is pretty close to what is claimed. Hard to believe for a vehicle of this size. Only gripe, the passenger side dash keeps popping off on it's own and hanging down. No other issues.
As advertised with mileage!

2023 Lexus RX 350h Premium 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)
So I am a former owner of two MDX's, and I also have a weekend sports car...and Audi Rs5 for pleasure. Had to trade in our MDX bc it was guzzling too much gas! Got the latest rx 350h and sharing feedback as we were looking for reviews for awhile...Car is as advertised with a 36 mpg...the main concerns of the 4 cylinder is also apparent. The acceleration is not fun and the sound is … something you will have to compromise..when not trying to accelerate at a high extent, the car is smooth, comfortable, and pretty quiet. Toyota hybrid system is of course very well done interior comfort and amenities are done nicely. This is a great everyday family car for day to day needs and road trips. Very satisfied with our vehicle, knowing we would have to settle for the engine. We didn't want to go full electric yet due to convenience for road trips....if this is something you enjoy, this is definitely a choice to consider...
Super comfortable

2023 Lexus RX 350h Luxury 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)
We were on a wait list for the Cadillac Lyriq which was taking very long. We test drove the non hybrid RX 350 and decided to get the hybrid since it gets significantly better gas mileage and can use regular unleaded gasoline. Gas mileage is fantastic. It doesn’t seem to matter if we use a more premium grade (91) or regular unleaded (87) for drive quality and gas mileage. Only the initial … drive home on the highway was in the mid 20’s - we figured it was cold, we were driving all highway and the hybrid battery must not have been charged. After that, we started averaging between 36-38 regardless if my husband or myself is driving-and we drive quite differently.
We’ve taken this vehicle on several 2-3 hour trips plus driven locally. This car is the most comfortable car we’ve ever driven. We love all the seat adjustments and the lumbar on both the driver and passenger seats on the luxury trim. The interior is very quiet. Owned 2 1/2 months and 2,300 miles.
We find the electric door handles easy to open and close and we haven’t had anyone with difficulty gettin or out including my 77 year old m. The cruise control is easy to figure out. Lane assist and traffic jam work great. Acceleration is plenty adequate.
