RX500H has it all

Coming out of 2022 RX350L (which was a great SUV) and into the 500H was a great surprise. The performance and handling is much better. And oh yes, it is still Lexus quiet. The new interior, the 14 inch touch screen, the 21 Speaker Levinson sound system and improved fuel economy are huge improvements. My wife said “ have to be careful when I step on gas now”! The new body design is also great looking. We have the Ultra White metallic exterior and Red and Black interior. The FSport seats are very comfortable and love the adjustable bolsters.

A great SUV with problems

I have now had my 2023 Lexus RX 500h Performance 3 for 2 years now and it's the first RX that I've owned that I have concerns about. First, it is by far the best performance and handling RX that I've owned and I love the technology when it works and the pure comfort of the interior. It however has had problems that Lexus doesn't seem to acknowledge. 1) I have replaced 2 12V engine batteries because they have suddenly gone dead requiring the vehicle be towed to the dealership. This is not a fun thing if it is parked in your garage when the battery decides to give up. All 4 wheels are locked and there is no way to release them without power from the engine battery. There seems to be a short circuit because even connecting a jumper battery, there is no power to the vehicle. The tow truck operator needs to drag the vehicle out of the garage and onto the flatbed. Luckily for me, this is still all under warranty so my cost is zero even though I have spent many hours with Lexus trying to get the vehicle towed to a dealer. 2) The 6 speed transmission is a piece of junk. It shifts very erratically and stutters at low speeds. 3) The Lexus navigation system has many problems. Periodically, the 14" display will just lock up and not respond to touch or voice. The only fix is to shut off the car and restart it. Another problem is that occasionally, the navigation will show me many miles off the highway, paralleling the route I'm taking. It's not that the road I'm driving on is new because all of them have been there for years and sometimes I'm on the highway and sometimes I'm somewhere else. This can only be corrected by shutting off the RX, and then wait for 5 minutes for everything to shut down. I love the vehicle for what it could be but the implementation really needs some work. Lexus needs to seriously look at some of these problems instead of giving the stock answer, "we couldn't duplicate the problem" even though I've supplied pictures and videos of some of the problems. 4) The battery problems brings up a deficiency in the configuration of the vehicle. If you disconnect the battery, then all of the parameters that you have changed are lost and you need to re-pair all cell phones. Couldn't Lexus have spent $10 for some flash memory to store parameters in? 5) Very poor implementation of metric and Imperial changeover. When I go to the USA, the automatic detection does not work and I need to manually change to Imperial. Having done that, the temperature stays in Celsius. 6) If I install Android Auto, I can no longer use Lexus voice commands. 7) When I change the zoom level of the navigation map, if I touch anything, the zoom level reverts to the default. Save my preferred zoom level Lexus.

Almost Perfect Lexus RX 500H

I picked up my new RX 500H a week ago and am almost totally enamored with it. There are a couple things that I don't like and therefore the 4 star rating. The biggest deficiency is that I have a 14" infotainment screen and can only display one thing at a time on it. In my old RX350 I could display the navigation map and another piece of information like the entertainment system, trip statistics, etc. Why do I need to push something on the screen to see how I'm doing on the trip or other information, there is lots of real estate on the screen to support a split screen. The other thing is that if I want to continue using the built in navigation system after my subscription expires, I need to pay for it or use Android Auto which requires a data plan. I know I purchased an expensive vehicle and shouldn't complain about small charges but using the same reasoning, I paid a lot of money for this vehicle so Lexus should include everything for at least the time I own the vehicle. Another annoyance is that the manuals are very poorly written. I find myself bouncing around between manuals and chapters all the time to find the answer to a simple question. I downloaded the manuals and usually have 2 or 3 windows open so I can follow the train of thought on a subject. Having said that, I still love the look, feel and performance of my new Lexus.
