What is the CX-5?
Given that the small SUV segment is not the most exciting on the market, the Mazda CX-5 does a great job of providing driving thrills. It is one of the reasons why it has been highly rated by Edmunds for years now. We saw the birth of the Mazda CX-50 in 2023, a similar compact SUV to the CX-5. Even though there are some differences, both vehicles ultimately fill the same slot in Mazda's lineup, so we're unsure if the older CX-5 will make a comeback for 2024, but if it does, we don't expect any major changes.
If it does return, we expect the 2024 Mazda CX-5 to use the same formula that has made it such a pleasing car to drive. The CX-5 doesn't beat its competitors in certain categories such as legroom and cargo space, but it definitely does outshine most when it comes to performance at an affordable price. The steering and handling on the CX-5 are remarkable, and Edmunds editors call it the "best-handling small crossover." All-wheel drive became standard in 2023, which only adds to its appeal. The 187-horsepower four-cylinder base engine does enough, but the turbocharged version is what really takes this car from a tame SUV to a fun and exhilarating machine.
The Mazda CX-5 also has a pleasant interior and a comfortable ride quality. Overall, the CX-5 is an excellent choice for anybody looking for a fun daily driver with more space than a sedan at an economical price.
