The 2025 CX-90 is the largest SUV in Mazda's stable, with a bumper-to-bumper length 15 inches longer than the CX-50. The three-row CX-90 shares its size with the new CX-70, which is essentially a two-row variant. With plentiful power, sharper-than average handling and a luxurious interior, it fits well into the Mazda lineup. Like other Mazda SUVs, though, it's less practical overall than rivals, as pointed out in our Expert Rating below.

Edmunds spotlight: Big on performance, but not practicality

With 340 horsepower available from the Turbo S models and the kind of sporty cornering abilities that Mazda is known for, the CX-90 is easily one of the more enjoyable three-row SUVs to drive. The problem is, most shoppers in this class prioritize practicality, and it comes up short in terms of both cargo capacity and third-row passenger space. As a result, we suggest paying close attention to both during a test drive to ensure it will meet your needs.

Competitors to consider

In the midsize three-row SUV class, the Kia Telluride has ruled supreme since its debut in 2020. It simply overdelivers for the price when it comes to features and space. Along the same lines, the related Hyundai Palisade is a very close second-place finisher. There's also the recent introduction of the Toyota Grand Highlander, which addresses some of the smaller Highlander's shortcomings and is available in an efficient hybrid model that would likely outperform the CX-90 PHEV in real-world efficiency.

Performance

How does the CX-90 drive? Performance isn't generally a priority for the midsize three-row SUV buyer, but the CX-90 proves to be quicker, better-handling and more stable than pretty much anything else in the class. We tested the CX-90 with the top-line 340-hp engine. At our test track, the CX-90 accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in a very respectable 6.5 seconds and displayed excellent midrange- and high-rpm punch after that. It's a breeze to squirt through traffic and merge on the highway.

We're also fans of the CX-90's eight-speed automatic transmission, which shifts quickly and unobtrusively. But we found the engine stop-start feature to be a bit more noticeable than we'd like. It can engage, shutting the gasoline engine off during cruising for better fuel economy, but can be a bit slow to start the engine back up.

As you'd expect from a Mazda, handling is something the CX-90 does better than most others in its class. The steering is nicely weighted, and the CX-90 feels planted and secure around corners. The brakes are also worth mentioning. Emergency stopping performance is impressive, but in routine driving we found the brake pedal to be a bit too touchy, which makes it hard to consistently stop smoothly.

Comfort

How comfortable is the CX-90? The CX-90 has an impressively composed ride quality. Our test vehicle's 21-inch wheel and tire package did feel a bit stiff over broken city streets, but in general the CX-90 smooths out bumps pretty well. At highway speeds, the CX-90 has excellent composure and is unfazed by dips or undulating surfaces. Another area where the CX-90 shines is its quiet interior. Road and wind noise is well subdued, and the engine is smooth and quiet until you really step on the gas.

We're big fans (no pun intended) of the CX-90's push-button climate control system. It's essentially set-and-forget, and we appreciate not having to dive into a menu screen to make quick adjustments. While the front seats offer excellent long-haul comfort, the second-row captain's chairs (other configurations are available) felt merely average. The third row is much more spacious than the one in the previous CX-9 but lacks the comfort provided by the back rows in the Kia Telluride and Volkswagen Atlas.

Interior

How’s the interior? The CX-90 manages to strike a successful balance between style and functionality. There's a pleasing number of physical buttons for major functions, and each one is clearly labeled and easy to press with only a glance. The driving position feels personal, but the rest of the interior, and its controls, are open to the other front passenger. Visibility is generally good, but drivers will need to adjust to the longer hood of the CX-90 in relation to other SUVs in the class.

The CX-90 offers seating configurations for six to eight passengers across a variety of trim levels. However, it lags behind the class leaders with regard to passenger space for second- and third-row passengers. That's not to say it's uncomfortable but the Hyundai Palisade and Volkswagen Atlas feel more spacious in back than the Mazda.

How’s the tech? Adding to the sleek look and feel of the CX-90's interior is a low-profile center screen and, on higher trims, a crisp-looking digital instrument panel display. The Bose audio system (also available on higher trim levels) provides enough power to easily fill the CX-90's cabin. But we're less fond of the center infotainment screen. The graphics look a little dated, and touchscreen functionality is oddly limited to when you're using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto smartphone integration. For the native interface, you have to use the system's rotary control knob to access menus and functions.

Advanced driver aids are plentiful, and all CX-90s come standard with adaptive cruise, lane keeping assistance, blind-spot warning and other systems. It's a competitive collection for the class, and we found the adaptive cruise more responsive and consistent than a few other competitors' systems.

Storage

How’s the storage? The CX-90 trails many of the other SUVs in the class in its cargo space. Specifications vary based on the CX-90's seating layout, but even at its best, there's only a max of 15.9 cubic feet behind the third row of seats, 40.1 cubes behind the second and 75.2 cubes when all seats are dropped. Those numbers are lower than those from the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Volkswagen Atlas and Honda Pilot — not always by a lot, but many buyers are drawn to this segment for the practicality.

Inside, the CX-90's style does limit the amount of usable storage space available for front passengers. There's enough room for most odds and ends, but vehicles like the Telluride and Honda Pilot offer more storage options.

Got small children? You'll like that the CX-90's rear doors open wide and make it fairly easy to install bulky child safety seats. If you plan on towing with the CX-90, the available towing package is definitely worth the extra money. It bumps the tow rating from 3,500 to 5,000 pounds, putting it at the more capable end of the segment.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates that the CX-90 gets 25 mpg combined in city/highway driving for both the base engine and the upgraded 3.3 Turbo S. That's a few mpg better than what most other three-row SUVs get. On our standardized mixed-driving evaluation route, our CX-90 returned 25.7 mpg, indicating that the EPA's estimate should be achievable in real-world driving. One minor observation from our test vehicle: The fuel economy meter was always optimistic by at least 2 mpg compared to actual fuel economy.

Is the CX-90 a good value? Sporting one of the most stylish interiors of any midsize three-row SUV, you could argue the CX-90 is almost too nice for daily family duties. Nearly every inch of the CX-90 looks and feels upscale, and you wouldn't be wrong to compare it to luxury brands such as Acura, Infiniti and Lincoln. But the CX-90's style comes at a cost. Our top-tier Turbo S Premium Plus rang in at nearly $62K, far more than any top-of-the-line Kia Telluride, Honda Pilot or Volkswagen Atlas. The CX-90 will start at just under $40K with a less powerful version of our test vehicle's engine.

Warranties are fairly standard but don't hold a candle to those offered by Hyundai and Kia. Roadside assistance is offered for three years/36,000 miles, but free maintenance is not offered.

Just when you think the midsize three-row SUV segment is pretty well sorted, the CX-90 shows up. Longer, more spacious and more powerful than the previous CX-9, the CX-90 brings Mazda's luxury and design aesthetic into a class that has mostly catered to families with small kids. With our top-level Turbo S Premium Plus test vehicle, it was almost too nice to put to use doing daily family duties.

As polished as the CX-90 may be, it does lack the practicality and spaciousness of the Hyundai Palisade and Honda Pilot and it can cost thousands of dollars more if fully optioned. But there's a specialness to the CX-90 that its main competitors are missing. In fact, the CX-90 wouldn't be out of place if it was cross-shopped against the Acura MDX, Infiniti QX60 or Lincoln Aviator.

Which CX-90 does Edmunds recommend?

It's worth paying more to get the 3.3 Turbo S. The increase in power is nice and makes this big SUV a little sportier, which is one of the reasons you are likely shopping for a Mazda anyway. It also comes with some extra convenience and technology features you'll appreciate.
