Overview
The 2025 CX-90 is the largest SUV in Mazda's stable, with a bumper-to-bumper length 15 inches longer than the CX-50. The three-row CX-90 shares its size with the new CX-70, which is essentially a two-row variant. With plentiful power, sharper-than average handling and a luxurious interior, it fits well into the Mazda lineup. Like other Mazda SUVs, though, it's less practical overall than rivals, as pointed out in our Expert Rating below.
Edmunds spotlight: Big on performance, but not practicality
With 340 horsepower available from the Turbo S models and the kind of sporty cornering abilities that Mazda is known for, the CX-90 is easily one of the more enjoyable three-row SUVs to drive. The problem is, most shoppers in this class prioritize practicality, and it comes up short in terms of both cargo capacity and third-row passenger space. As a result, we suggest paying close attention to both during a test drive to ensure it will meet your needs.
Competitors to consider
In the midsize three-row SUV class, the Kia Telluride has ruled supreme since its debut in 2020. It simply overdelivers for the price when it comes to features and space. Along the same lines, the related Hyundai Palisade is a very close second-place finisher. There's also the recent introduction of the Toyota Grand Highlander, which addresses some of the smaller Highlander's shortcomings and is available in an efficient hybrid model that would likely outperform the CX-90 PHEV in real-world efficiency.
What’s it like to live with?
Edmunds added a 2024 Mazda CX-90 plug-in hybrid to its long-term test fleet, and we aim to log 20,000 miles over a year of ownership. Our car experts are documenting everything they like and what needs improvement, along with fuel economy and maintenance costs. Read our one-year ownership test of our CX-90 to learn more.
Which CX-90 does Edmunds recommend?
It's worth paying more to get the 3.3 Turbo S. The increase in power is nice and makes this big SUV a little sportier, which is one of the reasons you are likely shopping for a Mazda anyway. It also comes with some extra convenience and technology features you'll appreciate.

Helpful trims summary and side-by-side comparison chart
Mazda CX-90 models
The 2025 Mazda CX-90 is a three-row midsize SUV with seating for a maximum of eight passengers. The lineup can be a little confusing because there are three powertrain choices and five trim levels. Starting things out is what Mazda calls the 3.3 Turbo, which has a turbocharged 3.3-liter six-cylinder engine (280 horsepower, 332 lb-ft of torque). It's paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard. The 3.3 Turbo S increases output to 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Then there's the CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid that has a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Mazda pairs these powertrains with four trim levels: Select, Preferred, Premium Sport and Premium Plus. Some features differ among some of the engine and trim levels.
3.3 Turbo Select
This base model comes well equipped with a long list of standard features that include:
- 19-inch alloy wheels
- LED headlights
- Roof rails
- Power liftgate
- Keyless entry and start
- Tri-zone automatic climate control
- Synthetic leather upholstery
- Three third-row seats
- 10.25-inch infotainment screen
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
- Eight-speaker audio system
Standard driver assist features include:
- Frontal collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
- Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the vehicle and the car in front)
- Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning (alerts you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while in reverse)
- Lane keeping assistance (makes minor steering corrections to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane)
- Driver attention monitor (issues an alert if sensors determine you are becoming fatigued)
- Safe exit assist (can prevent a rear passenger from opening a door into traffic approaching from behind)
3.3 Turbo Preferred
Adds to the Select trim with:
- Sunroof
- Leather upholstery
- Heated front seats
- Power-adjustable front passenger seat
- Second-row sunshades
- 12.3-inch infotainment screen
- Wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Wireless phone charger
- Additional USB charge ports
3.3 Turbo Premium Sport
This midrange trim is new for 2025 and adds a handful of convenience and appearance upgrades such as:
- 21-inch wheels
- Increased towing capacity (3,500 to 5,000 pounds)
- Full digital gauge cluster
- Upgraded Bose audio system
- Black trim and wheels
- Head-up display (displays important information in your sight line on the windshield)
- Panoramic sunroof
- Integrated navigation system
- Driver's seat memory functions
3.3 Turbo Premium Plus
Tops off the base engine's feature list by way of:
- Power-folding and auto-dimming exterior mirrors
- Windshield wiper de-icer
- Premium leather upholstery
- Second-row captain's chairs (reducing seating capacity to seven)
- Heated second-row seats
- Heated steering wheel
- Ventilated front seats
- Front cross-traffic warning with automatic braking
- Surround-view camera system (gives you a top-down view of the vehicle and its surroundings for tight parking situations)
- Automatic reverse braking (applies the brakes automatically to avoid an imminent collision with an object behind the vehicle)
3.3 Turbo S
The first model with the more powerful engine goes without a trim level name but is similar in content to the 3.3 Turbo Premium trim. Note that it also has a two-person third-row seat, reducing capacity to seven passengers.
Turbo S Premium
Upgrading to this trim generally gets you the features from the 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus. It has the second-row captain's chairs for six-passenger capacity.
Turbo S Premium Plus
This top trim is outfitted identically to the 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus trim but adds:
- Quilted leather upholstery
- Ventilated second-row seats
The CX-90 PHEV has a simplified lineup consisting of Preferred, Premium and Premium Plus trim levels. See our CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid page for further explanation.

CX-90 competes with prestige brands? You betcha!

2024 Mazda CX-90 3.3 Turbo S Premium 4dr SUV AWD (3.3L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
Purchased the Turbo S Premium model -- 340 HP. I read dozens of professional reviews before test driving locally and buying. Brand new vehicle so you may have to expand your search away from home to find the model / trim that you want. I got the version with captain's chairs in 2nd and 3rd row so mine seats 6. Bench seat also available if you prefer that.
Pros: great acceleration … with top notch handling and comfortable ride. Soaks up bumps well. Very quiet on highway. Great Bose stereo. I have to disagree with many of the professional reviewers -- I like the scroll wheel interface rather than touch screen -- less distracting. Bought a brand new 2021 Audi Q7 and got rid of it after a year -- great vehicle but I hated the touch screen interface -- Audi not intuitive and very frustrating. I had a 2019 Mazda CX-9 for 4 years and liked the interface - one of the big reasons I was attracted to the CX-90.
Cons: as other reviewers have noted - limited space for storage in front cabin and behind 3rd row. Turbo S Premium model that I bought does not have ventilated front seats, so you may want to avoid black interior. Paddle shifters are there, but I prefer to shift with my own with the gear selector as I did my old CX-9 but can't do with the CX-90.
Overall, I think that Mazda has hit a home run with this vehicle. Those looking for a prestige brand or more cargo room will definitely look for another brand. But I like it better than the 2021 Audi Q7 that I owned.
Dealer experience: Picked up the CX-90 at Huffman Mazda in Louisville, over 100 miles from home to get the model I wanted. Well worth the drive - top notch customer experience, no games, no nonsense customer experience. Finalized a very fair deal via email and phone.
Beautiful but not reliable

2024 Mazda CX-90 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus 4dr SUV AWD (3.3L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
There are a ton of pros about this car. It literally checked all the boxes that I didn’t even know I had until driving it. I have just over 6,000 miles on it after owning the Turbo S Premium Plus model for 6 months.
I’ll try to keep this short and sweet. The pros are numerous: ride quality, aesthetics, quiet cabin, safety, etc etc. but the cons, though they are few, are now outweighing … all that this car has to offer.
It’s been in the shop 5 times. Much to Mazda’s credit; the customer service has been phenomenal. But I’m tired of taking it in. The problems I’ve had:
Driver side mirror shakes at high speeds on the highway. Which they have replaced but the new one shakes the exact same.
Two separate recalls. Minor in nature.
Front doors rattling. Fixed by the service department and quiet as a mouse now.
Grinding noise heard 100% of the time coming from behind the steering wheel. Which I have to take it in the shop in a couple days. I’ll update after that ordeal.
And the biggest one: the transmission is anything but smooth. It is clunky. Jerky, jumps, delays, and down right irritating. To the point where it’s kind of stressful and does not leave one with the feeling that this vehicle is not going to last.
I would not recommend it. As nice as it looks. They missed the mark on the transmission and build quality.
Near BMW Performance & Lexus-like Quality

2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
My wife's 17 year old RX 400h has been remarkably reliable, but needed replacement. We cross shopped multiple brands, including the Kia that Edmunds rated a bit higher than the CX 90. In my view that comparison review is valid, but only if your primary use case is as a younger family that needs to haul a soccer team, or if touch screens are more important to you than stopping … distances, gas mileage, insurance costs, and quality.
Remarkably, the CX 90 PHEV is a driver's car - an actual driver's car that's also a spacious hauler. We were shocked by the excellent handling and tight turning radius, and then I realized that the CX 90 PHEV is a mid engine design! The gas engine and electric motor are both behind the front axle: a "front-mid." For us, better handling, better braking, better quality, a gorgeous interior with properly firm seats, and radically superior fuel economy are a winning combination. A worthwhile tradeoff vs. a few extra cubic feet of space. You should also check insurance rates in your area. Kia/Hundai only added engine immobilizers in 2022, so at least where we live they're still being targetted by thieves and insurance rates here are higher for them.
To top it off this is a PHEV that can tow 3500 lbs and run electric for all of our local driving. No other brand offers a PHEV 3 row in our area excepting the much higher priced and (sadly) lower quality Lincoln.
In our view Mazda is no longer a direct competitor to Kia, Honda, Hyundai or Toyota - they're offering near BMW performance with Lexus-like quality at lower prices than traditional "luxury" brands. We highly recommend you consider this model.
It's a great "drivers" SUV at a reasonable price.

2024 Mazda CX-90 3.3 Turbo Preferred Plus 4dr SUV AWD (3.3L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
Purchased mine on 9/25/2023, and, I still have smile on my face. My wife and I are in our mid 70's, no grand kids yet, and, this was the perfect SUV for us. I'm a Mazda fan and still own a 2013 Miata MX5 converitble as my fun in the sun toy. The Preferred Plus trim was perfect of us as we needed a 2nd row bench seat, which is not available on upper trims, for our dogs. 280hp is more … than enough power for hwy merging and has ample passing power when needed. Like all Mazdas this is a "drivers vehicle". Great handling, good power, and, the fit and finish is fantastic. Test drove the Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, and, Hyundai Palisade, which were okay, but none of them drive like this CX90. Yes, those have more cargo space, and, legroom in the 3rd row, but that was not a necessity for us. I traded a 2018 VW Atlas V6 I had for 5 1/2 years and it was cavernous like the other 3 I test drove. However, none of these are a "drivers vehicle" like this CX90. The Turbo charged 3.3 liter at 280hp uses regular gas, and, gets better gas mileage than the others. If you want a midsized SUV that has more than adequate power, fantastic handling, and, the best fit and finish of any vehicle in its price range, the CX90 is a real winner. Especially in the Preferred Plus trim. It's both Zoom Zoom, and, superb handling all in one package. Personally, I don't have a single dislike.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2025 Mazda CX-90, so we've included reviews for other years of the CX-90 since its last redesign.
