Edmunds' Expert Review

by Kurt Niebuhr
Senior Vehicle Test Editor
Kurt Niebuhr has worked in the automotive industry since 2005. A automotive photographer by trade, Kurt is now one of Edmunds' high-performance test drivers. He's driven and photographed hundreds, if not thousands, of vehicles all over the world, so Kurt's library of automotive experiences would certainly make for a good book. When not dreaming about getting his racing license or trying to buy out-of-date film for his cameras, Kurt can usually be found cursing at his 1966 Mustang.
Pros
- Supreme track-focused performance
- Esoteric but functional design
- Limited production ensures exclusivity
Cons
- Very stiff ride
- Minimal storage space
- Stratospheric pricing, even as exotic sports cars go
What's new
- All-new supercar for McLaren
- 789-horsepower V8
- A race car masquerading as a road car
- 2019 is the first year for the Senna
Like the Hope Diamond or the Taj Mahal, the McLaren Senna is something that you take one look at and know right away it's special. Starting with naming the car after racing legend Ayrton Senna, McLaren set out to make the most track-capable road car ever built.

Every detail of the Senna has been examined and engineered to ensure ultimate performance. The Senna starts with a carbon-fiber tub that's both extremely strong and extremely light. Then there's an active suspension, active front and rear aerodynamics, and Formula 1-inspired carbon-ceramic brakes. And what about the engine, you say? Oh, it's simply a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine cranking out 789 horsepower, or nearly the equivalent of two Porsche 911 engines put together. Carbon-fiber racing seats and an optional six-point racing harness ensure you're as connected to the car as possible.
Performance figures barely make sense. McClaren says the Senna hits 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds and clears the quarter-mile in 10.0 seconds. Stopping power is just as disorienting, and thanks to the Senna's active suspension and aerodynamics, handling only gets better the faster you go. In short, if you want a car whose limits will likely remain far beyond your own, look no further.
Competition for the Senna, assuming you can secure one of the 500 built, comes from the Ford GT or possibly an actual racing car. If exclusivity and unbelievable performance are all that you crave, the Senna is one of the few cars that fully delivers.
Edmunds' Expert Rating
Which Senna does Edmunds recommend?
Without any trim levels, the McLaren Senna instead offers personalization on an option-by-option basis. Our Senna (we can dream, right?) would be fitted with the optional air conditioning (a no-cost option), the seven-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, the Track Telemetry option with three cameras, and the six-point safety harness for the inevitable track duty.
2019 McLaren Senna models
The 2019 McLaren Senna is a two-passenger mid-engine ultra-exotic sports car. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine making 789 horsepower and 590 lb-ft, the Senna uses a seven-speed automatic transmission and is rear-wheel-drive. Instead of trim levels, customization is offered through a series of stand-alone options and a near endless array of bespoke color and other appearance options through McLaren Special Operations (MSO).
