The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT is a high-end performance vehicle that comes in two distinct flavors. The first is a coupe, available with six-cylinder or V8 engines, that was given a thorough redesign back in 2024. We're not expecting any noteworthy changes to the coupe. However, the sedan — which Mercedes confusingly refers to as a four-door coupe and isn't really related to the two-door coupe at all — is a different story. Introduced way back in 2019, it's arguably overdue for a refresh, and the one in the pipeline might shock the faithful of this sportiest Mercedes: It could be going all-electric.
Edmunds spotlight: An electric AMG GT?
While nothing has been confirmed as yet from the crew in Stuttgart, numerous spy shots seem to indicate that the next AMG GT sedan will be an all-electric car, and not just a plug-in hybrid like the current 63 S E Performance model. Mercedes-Benz is no stranger to EVs, offering multiple electric vehicles in sedan and SUV form. But this would be the first all-out sport model powered solely by electrons. If you're worried about performance, fear not: Whispers of 1,000 horsepower abound. On the other hand, many manufacturers have been backing away from their EV commitments, but this could be so far along the development road that it's too late to turn back.
Competitors to consider
The AMG GT coupe was conceived as a competitor to the Porsche 911, and it remains a compelling alternative. So does the Chevrolet Corvette, which trades a bit of sophistication — but not performance — for a lower price. As for the sedan, the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe, Audi S7 and RS 7, and Porsche Panamera are all noteworthy alternatives. If the EV rumors prove to be true, the Porsche Taycan would be a natural rival.
