There's nothing quite like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, which is why it has remained popular among the well-monied set for so long. Originally conceived as an off-road utility vehicle way back in the 1970s, the G-Class today is packed with luxurious features and a price tag to match. In 2025, this big two-row luxury SUV received noteworthy updates in the form of new engine choices, including, for the first time, an all-electric powertrain. It also received an updated interior and infotainment system. With that in mind, we don't expect many noteworthy changes for the 2026 model year.
Edmunds spotlight: Real off-road capability
Even with a starting price that's higher than the fully loaded cost of some competitors, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class remains popular partly because of its capability. Whether buyers actually take their six-digit SUV off-road is another question, but if they want to, the G-Class has the goods. This current generation has an independent front suspension but retains the solid rear axle of its predecessors. It also includes independently locking front, rear and center differentials to help you make the most of any traction you might have, along with a low-range transfer case to make it easy to crawl over big bumps or climb steep escarpments with ease. Will you see a G-Class on the rugged trails of Moab anytime soon? Probably not. But a buyer could if they wanted, and that makes the difference.
Competitors to consider
You could argue that the G-Class is in a class on its own, and while few vehicles combine the capability and luxury of this SUV, there are others to consider. If you want to show how much you've spent on your SUV, there's the Bentley Bentayga or Rolls-Royce Cullinan, although neither matches the big Benz's off-road chops. Top trims of the Land Rover Defender match the capability, but without the luxury. You can also take a look at the Lexus GX if you're willing to sacrifice power in the name of paying half as much. If you want an electric SUV, the Rivin R1S is less luxurious but has better range than the EV version of the G-Class.
