As the smallest SUV in its lineup, the Mercedes-Benz GLA is the de facto entry point for a lot of new Benz buyers. It's unmistakably a Mercedes-Benz from the outside, with a big grille framing the three-pointed star logo just the centerpiece of its pleasantly attractive styling. Inside it's comfortable and surprisingly roomy considering its compact dimensions, and its size makes it easy to drive around town. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine comes in two different flavors, including a 302-horsepower version in the AMG GLA 35. While rumors and spy photos of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA sedan have circulated for a while now, there's no word on the GLA SUV, which leads us to believe that the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLA will carry on largely unchanged.
Edmunds spotlight: Affordable ... at first
If you're on a budget and absolutely must have a Mercedes-Benz, the GLA is the least expensive way to achieve your dream. It offers comfortable seats, luxurious cabin appointments and an easy-to-use tech interface. However, options add up quickly; features like driver assist systems and heated seats are extra. Just be careful with that order sheet if you want to keep the price reasonable.
Competitors to consider
Other subcompact SUVs worth a look include the Audi Q3 and BMW X1 — natural rivals to the bite-size GLA. Other options include the Volvo XC40 and, to a lesser extent, the Lexus UX and Cadillac XT4. If you need more space, the slightly larger Mercedes-Benz GLB is mechanically similar to the GLA but offers more cargo space.
