Part of the second Maybach generation introduced for 2021
Overview
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz Maybach is a palatial luxury sedan made for eliminating any hint of inconvenience from the motoring experience. It's based on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class but with an even longer wheelbase for more space and comfort for rear occupants. The presumption is that, having bought your Maybach, you'll now spend most of your time in the back seat and have your chauffeur drive you around. This is a mega-luxury sedan made for moving important people between important places.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2024 Mercedes-Benz Maybach S 580 4MATIC 4dr Sedan AWD (4.0L 8cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 9A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.56 per gallon for premium unleaded in Louisiana.
In person, the Maybach is largely beyond description. We'll try anyway: Leather is quilted, badges are illuminated and many, many things are polished. If it's inside the Maybach, it smells good and is nice to touch. The interior is like being in a leather-appointed museum. And this sedan's cloud-like ride and safe-room silence draw into clear relief the reason there's still an optional V12 under the hood: status. After all, the turbocharged and electrified V8 is both more socially responsible and still amply powerful. There's a level of luxury in this Golden Carriage that's lacking in just about every other "luxurious" thing on this planet. It is at once a mountain of automotive achievement and a shrine to opulence. Bottom line: It competes with massive sedans from Bentley and Rolls-Royce. And it's nice. Really, really nice.
Which Maybach does Edmunds recommend?
We recommend the V12-powered S 680 model. The top variant of the ultra-luxe S-Class offers effortless acceleration and the satisfaction of knowing you're driving (riding in?) one of the most exclusive vehicles in the Benz lineup. While you're at it, throw in the upgraded adaptive suspension and rear fridge option. If you want to be real extra, check the box for the Maybach Champagne flutes.

If such a thing exists, the Bentley Flying Spur is the driver's car of the ultra-luxe sedan segment. It's shorter than the Maybach and offers three powertrains, including two turbocharged big-power options (a V8 and W12) and a plug-in hybrid that uses a turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 and offers an EPA-estimated 21 miles of all-electric range. All-wheel drive is standard. If driving matters, then choose the Flying Spur. But if you plan to ride in the back, the Maybach may be the better, more comfortable choice.
If the S-Class is the starter ultra-luxe sedan, then the Rolls-Royce Ghost is the pinnacle of the segment. The Ghost offers a square-edged "Look at me. I matter" presence wherever it goes. And it comes in an extended-wheelbase version that's even longer than the Maybach. It disregards aerodynamics, fuel economy and plebeian stares with the indifference of a self-assured aristocrat.
Don't ignore the S-Class as an alternative to the Maybach just because it lacks the Maybach's bourgeois namesake. Though it's shorter — there are 126 inches between its wheel centers instead of 133 inches — there's still ample rear seat room for most people. And nobody has ever criticized the S-Class for lacking features, quality or innovation. In fact, in many ways, the S-Class leads the tiny segment of luxury sedans, especially when it comes to breakthrough technologies.
The Maybach sedan should be thought of as the ultimate Mercedes-Benz S-Class. It's offered with either a V8 or V12 engine and pushes luxury to heights that justify the prohibitive price. If you're looking to show up your neighbor with a plebeian S-Class, BMW 7 Series or Audi A8, this is one way to do it.
Without any official information, we're speculating that the Maybach could gain some self-driving capabilities for the 2024 model year since Mercedes' Drive Pilot Level 3 system is set to debut in the supporting S-Class. Then again, it may not since the Maybach could be considered more of a limousine than a sedan you drive yourself. In that vein, its direct rivals include the Bentley Flying Spur and Rolls-Royce Ghost.
Edmunds says
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz Maybach is the ultimate in German luxury, challenged only by the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce.
