Alongside its fixed-roof sibling, the 718 Cayman, the 2025 Porsche 718 Boxster is one of the purest expressions of the sports car concept currently on the market. This two-seat mid-engine convertible delivers exceptionally balanced handling and lightning-quick steering response. Its base turbocharged four-cylinder engine is punchy though aurally unsatisfying. Things, however, get much better when you upgrade to the six-cylinder — it packs more power and a burlier exhaust note. Even at a starting price of nearly $75,000, the 718 Boxster serves as Porsche's entry-level sports car, slotting below the 911. It's more expensive and less powerful than many of its competitors, but the 718's driving experience is tough to beat.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2025 Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder RS 2dr Convertible (4.0L 6cyl 7AM) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of N/A undefined in Michigan.
The 718 Boxster might be one of the best-handling sports cars on the road, but its convenience and tech features are lacking. The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system is dated and difficult to navigate. Wired Apple CarPlay comes standard, but Android Auto connectivity is unavailable. Meanwhile, features that come standard on other cars in this price category, such as full power seats, wireless charging, onboard navigation and adaptive cruise control, are available as optional extras on the 718 Boxster.
Competitors to consider
With the convertible sports car market continuing to shrink, the 718 Boxster is light on direct competitors. The Chevrolet Corvette convertible is close in price, but it is larger and makes significantly more power. Then there's the BMW Z4, which has a lower starting price and a front-mounted engine and is arguably more of a sporty grand tourer. Options open up slightly if you're willing to look at hardtop models, with the mechanically similar 718 Cayman of course being worthy of consideration. Other choices include the Toyota GR Supra and BMW M2.
Which 718 Boxster does Edmunds recommend?
If you're going to splurge on a Porsche convertible, you might as well spend a bit more to get the big engine. The Boxster GTS 4.0 starts at about $15,000 more than the Boxster S, but we think the extra expense is well worth it. You'll enjoy more power and a throatier sound from the six-cylinder engine, in addition to beefier brakes, a stiffer and lower-riding suspension, and a torque-vectoring limited-slip differential. These features enhance both performance and the driving experience, which is what this car is all about.
