Most 4Runners come standard with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (278 horsepower, 317 lb-ft of torque) that is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive (4WD) is available as an option and comes with a two-speed transfer case.

The i-Force Max engine is standard equipment on the Platinum, TRD Pro and Trailhunter trims. It adds a hybrid system that increases power output to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque (323 hp for the Trailhunter) and comes with 4WD as standard. The third-row seats are not offered with the i-Force Max engine.
