Overview

Few vehicle nameplates are as evocative as the Toyota Land Cruiser. The name signifies excellent off-road capability right off the showroom floor. Land Cruiser owners often also see this two-row off-road SUV as a blank slate to build the backwoods buster of their dreams. With this newest generation that debuted two years ago, Toyota made the Land Cruiser smaller and less expensive without diminishing the model's overall appeal. It also comes standard with a hybrid powertrain that helps it get pretty good fuel economy for a boxy-looking SUV. Because this newest Land Cruiser is still relatively new, we aren't expecting any major changes for the 2026 Land Cruiser.

Edmunds spotlight: Off-roader choices

The Toyota Land Cruiser, 4Runner and Tacoma pickup are all built off the same basic underpinnings, and all are excellent off-road choices. It begs the question of where the Land Cruiser fits in. The LC is a little bigger than the 4Runner, but it could also be seen as an alternative to higher-end 4Runner trims and more focused overall on off-road capability. It comes standard with four-wheel drive and a low range, along with standard locking center and rear differentials for maximizing traction on tough trails. The Land Cruiser also offers a front stabilizer bar that disconnects with the push of a button to increase front wheel travel in extreme situations. There's also a low-speed cruise control system for off-road adventures, different preprogrammed traction settings for various terrains, and camera views that let you see precisely where you're placing a wheel. It does this while offering distinctive style and trail cred that's tough to match.

Competitors to consider

We already mentioned the new 4Runner, which is a homegrown competitor of sorts. It's available in more affordable versions and offers a small third-row seat. In that sense, it's a better pick for families. Other alternatives would include the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco, both of which are extremely capable off-road but don't have the on-road refinement of the Land Cruiser. The Land Rover Defender is another sophisticated off-road SUV also with a dedicated following.
