Like having a pickup

I've always had a pickup and my Rav 4 with all the space you get when you put down the back seats it is almost like having a pickup! Also I can put lumber on top of it and carry it home strapped down. The mileage is excellent. I was getting 13 to 15 miles on my pickup but the RAV 4 gets 20 with the AC on and almost 30s with out the AC on.

2008 RAV 4 could have been great

After 144,000 miles and 10 years later from new, this has been a pretty reliable hard-working car with pretty good comfort and drive-ability. It still has a smooth ride and descent acceleration for a 2.4L. Mileage has been 25 mpg on the highway overall, better with a tail wind. Thus far the chief complaint is the rear suspension arm and alignment recall fix. Toyota in their infinite wisdom ultimately decided the solution to the rear arm suspension fix was to epoxy the system in place, which only Toyota is willing to do at something around $742 per side, so over $1400 for the rear suspension repair/alignment. This was covered by the recall the first time around but now the rear alignment is a bit out again and this time they want the owner to pick up the tab. Much of the repair cost is in the epoxy kit. This is a big failing on Toyota's part for RAV owners with this issue. Why should the owner have to pay an exceptionally high alignment repair price for their design flaw? The right thing for Toyota to do is charge a normal alignment price and eat the rest for the life of the car. Their flaw, their punishment. The second costly repair came this summer with the reverse transmission. Shifting into reverse one day caused the reverse clutch (I'm told unique to RAV4) to break. All other gears worked fine but in reverse, on any kind of steep hill, the gear would slip. My regular repair shop and Toyota dealer service would not repair just the reverse clutch. They would only put in a whole new transmission at something like $3400! A transmission specialist repaired it for $2300, still a pretty big expense, but so far all is well again. Other than those two issues, the car has been great! Whether I'd buy another RAV4 or even Toyota for that matter would depend on researching the latest misgivings like this car has had. That's what has compelled me to share my experience.

2008 Rav4 - rough ride

Just bought a 2008 Rav4 4cyl fwd, base model with a few extras. A friend has an 05 and loves it; another has one of the original Ravs and loves it. Something must have changed. You can really, really feel the road; very rough ride. Seats are very uncomfortable. The interior is new milenium plastic. The car has an unexplained "clink" on shifting, exceleration and braking. Burned plastic smell (like I picked up a plastic bag on the muffler - hope that goes away). Really disappointing ride

I have a 2008 Toyota RAV4 Limited (Lemon). I had the car two weeks and a sensor went out) I was driving and all the lights on the dash board lit up. This car has had Multiple recalls on it, too many to count. Seat Belts, Acceleration problems, Computer problems, Shocks/Struts and Engine Oil leak. They did an over haul for oil leak and the darn car is still consuming oil. They said the car is not leaking oil, but its burning oil. The paint is peeling. The Pulley broke and I ad to have the thing towed and compressor replaced. I have come to realize Toyota products are just like Chevrolet, Ford and all the rest NO GOOD!!!

I got my Rav4 yesterday, 2008 4 cyl base model with roof rail and 17" wheels. Today I added 250 miles on it through moutain roads and freeways. The 4 cyl responses quick and provides sufficient power. The enginee is not quiet but sounds sporty. Handling is fantastic for a SUV at this price. It actiually handels much better than many sedans i drove. The ride is a little bit stiff tho. I think it's the trade off of good handling. Interior space is bright, roomy and functional, the design and materials are nice but not the best in class. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.
