Love My Reliable Soccer Taxi

2004 Toyota Sequoia SR5 4WD 4dr SUV (4.7L 8cyl 4A)

While the Sequoia is not great on gas mileage, it has by far been the most reliable vehicle I've owned. I bought a 2004 SR5 brand new and kept the oil changed. It still starts instantly like it did over 10 years ago. I've taken my teenage boys and their teammates to tournaments, and everybody sat comfortably with enough cargo space for luggage and soccer backpacks. I have replaced the battery, shocks ,struts, and brakes. I have never replaced the timing belt, and it has almost 300,000 miles on it. I have had 3 drivers run into me while sitting still and this vehicle has kept me safe. My DVD player has never been great from day one. The movies get stuck in the player. The radio volume button has stopped working properly. The motor of the back window wiper has died. Neither Toyota or the dealership notified me of the ball bearing recall. Thank God I wasn't traveling at a high speed when mine broke. The arm rest is broken and the seat cushion has torn on the driver's seat. I've owned Chevy, Ford, Nissan, and Infiniti. The Toyota has given me fewer problems and better performance than all of them.

We purchased our vehicle (AWD) off Craigs list from a dealer in So. California. It had 92,000 on it and is in pristine condition. We've had a 100,000 mile service done which included bumper to bumper service and the vehicle continues to drive like new. It was purchased as a replacement for our 1998 Toyota 4-runner with 250k on it was totaled by a friend. The Sequoia has more than we will ever need in a vehicle and we've taken two out of state trips with it. It has the room, the comfort and the separate temperature zones is something that definitely comes in handy. Our conclusion, we won't buy anything else. Other than the less than desirable fuel economy, its a great vehicle.

My first SUV! Love it!

I bought this used in Aug.2008. I LOVE it! Drives very comfortable, handles well, feels more like driving a car than a truck,& has great "power up" when taking off. The leather's still in great condition. It's very comfortable for road trips; bought it with 88,000 miles & it's currently at 125,000 miles due to in/out of state dance comp's. There's been NO major repairs on this SUV. Previous owner kept fabulous repair log with minor repairs; new breaks, routine maintenance & oil changes. We've had no mechanical/interior/exterior issues at all. This SUV is in for the LONG HAUL & still going STRONG! We are VERY pleased with the quality, design, & comfort. Will never own anything but a TOYOTA!

UPDATE 12/2016. Everything going along OK. Did have a damaged rear hatch when I tried to close it and didn't see a suitcase handle sticking up. Misaligned the door/hatch pretty badly - so much so that replacing the hinges did not work. Had to get a used hatch, hinges, etc, plus the paint-job. $1,400 later it is still not exactly a perfect fit but does close. So be careful and be sure nothing is in the way (upper) when closing the hatch. Pulling a trailer full of furniture from hilly PA to NH it gets about 14 MPG. Nice, SAFE vehicle. Have owned nothing but Toyotas, from a 1979 Corolla to the 2003 Sequoia. Bought it to pull an enclosed trailer when needed. Wife fell in love with it. This Sequoia was part of the recall for the rusted frame/underbody. It also recently was recalled for the faulty passenger airbag. Put about 25K miles on it, and it did have an intermittent check-engine light on it - for evap issue i think. Usually got 15 MPG with it, 13 or so when pulling the trailer. As high as 21.5 on a recent trip that was mostly highway. Vehicle was rear-ended recently - probably a good thing we were driving this or could have had serious injuries. VERY solid SUV with good reliability.

Fifteen years so far, going for another 5

Best qualities of my SUV? Reliability. The 4WD. Performance in snow. Safety. Bought this vehicle on Memorial Day weekend in 2004. Used it to tow a 22 foot Wilderness trailer for 2 years of family camping trips until we bought a Ford F250 to do the towing. It now has 208,000 miles in 15 years. We are scrupulous with the maintenance schedule and always take it to the dealership for repairs and maintenance. Never any engine or transmission problems. Timing chain replaced at 130,000 miles not because there was anything wrong, it was just recommended per maintenance schedule. Had a complete front end job done at 180,000 miles. Usual maintenance expenses for brakes, tires, fluid changes, etc. It has been a perfect family car for 6 of us. We live in snow country and this vehicle with its 4WD capability is awesome! I have owned other 4WD SUV’s and this out does them all in snow and bad weather. Great ground clearance. We have taken it 4 wheeling on gnarly, gnarly roads and it is a beast.....you feel really safe in this SUV. It has been in 2 accidents, left side front end, and glancing t-bone on left side between front and rear doors (drivers hit us). We could see it happen both times and were expecting some real jolting power impacts but not so. This vehicle took the impacts soundly without our bodies being slammed into anything. The gas mileage when we first purchased it was 16 and1/2 MPG. It now gets between 14 1/2 and 15 MPG combined highway and city. We want to buy another one when the time comes, but the mechanics at the dealership say no reason to not expect it to keep going strong to 300,000 miles. We hope so. Minor problems: the antennae no longer works so elevated all the time now. Power plug in back seat console no longer works. Rear hatch in door malfunctioned so sometimes you could open it but other times not. They told us it would cost over $300 to fix it. My husband said forget that and took it apart himself and fixed it. All in all, very, very few problems with this year Sequoia 4WD. Without a doubt, the very best vehicle I have ever owned. ( I have owned 1974 Chevy LUV truck, 1985 Jeep Cherokee, 1989 Toyota SR5 truck, 1992 Ford Explorer, 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan, 2005 Jeep Wrangler, 2006 Ford F-250 4WD longbed truck, 2009 Toyota Corolla.)

Ours Went to Sequoia Heaven

What can I say - Loved our SR5 to death. June 2013 my wife and kids were in a bad accident. Rear ended and slammed into the back of another truck because the other car got so deep under the rear she couldn't fully stop. Bought ours on July 3, 2004 almost 9 years. We were never happier with another car. Planned on driving it until the wheels fell off. The safety of this truck left my family just fine. The frame stopped the other car in its place amazing. Wished we could have kept it but insurance claimed total loss. What a shame, cried for several days - seems silly but when you have such good memories with a car like this it's hard to let go. 155k+ miles and valued at $13k. Way to go Toyota!

My 04 Sequoia was terrific. I put 200,000 miles on it & it still ran great. This car is fun, fast comfortable & safe. Not only does it looks great, it performs excellent. It is 100% reliable inspite of the fact that I didn't serve it as often as I should've . In 2012 I had a serious accident in this car. I was driving 70 mph on the freeway downhill, "the bottom line," I lost control of the car which cause the car to spend in 2 full circles & ram the front end directly into the cement wall & it was total. I walked away with only a seat belt burn on my neck. The Hway patrol said he never seen anyone servive such an accident. My insurance gv me 15k for my lost which proves it holds its value.

Purchased new in 2004. I've done all the dealer recommended services. It has 196,000 miles and still drives like new. I've had a few expensive repairs like the starter and of course routine maintenance like water pumps and timing belt. I've also replaced a few parts on the exterior due to sun fading. But it continues to be a solid and reliable vehicle. Insurance is lower because it's 12 years old as well as registration. Dealership tells me since we've done all the service it should go 300 too 400k miles. My last vehicle was a chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon Denali. Both had fewer miles and twice as many repairs.

I have owned my Sequoia for over a year now. Other than gas mileage, which is a fundamental problem for ALL full size SUVs (my Sequoia gets 14-15 mpg - not too bad). It has an awesome look and drives like you're on a cloud. It has a very quiet ride too. We often pack 5 adults and 2 kids in the car for 2hr plus rides and it has tons of room and comfort. It is the first auto I have purchased that I have told people is the best auto I have ever owned. Other manufacturers take a lesson from Toyota... they got it right!

I bought our Sequoia new in January, 2004 and transferred ownership to my son a year ago and I bought a new Highlander for myself. He’s selling Sequoia now to get a car to use for business and clients. I’ve done all scheduled maintenance at Toyota dealers. Engine, transmission, everything is still strong. Sequoia handles great in Sierra snow and on the freeway in San Jose. Much better in snow than a previous 1996 Suburban. I am 6’2” and son is 6’4” and we fit very comfortably behind the wheel. Have used to transport kids to college with all their stuff, this car has excellent capacity. I want to keep it but have no need for another car in the driveway (and I really like my new Highlander). It will be sad to see it go, but some new owner will love it.

Seems OK....

......but then again this is the first full size SUV I've bought. Bought my 4x4 2004 SR5 model in 2020 with 156,000 miles, one owner, pretty good condition, for $4000. The original owner kept up with all the maintenance apart from timing belt, replacement at a dealer is astronomical but bought the Aisan belt/water pump kit from Amazon for $170 and been quoted $300 by local garage to fit, it's a job I could tackle myself but need one or two specialty tools and would take me a day or two so not worth my while. Have replaced one or two things, a couple of seized rear calipers, cheap and easy to do yourself as was the EVAP sensor($30), a rear door actuator ($26). The biggest pain so far is the rear hatch. Stopped being able to open. I replaced handle and lock actuator, approx $150 for parts. Failed again after a few days. Worked out is a poorly designed system and handle and actuator do not work in harmony so ran end of actuator cable through hole under license plate so I can open and it still locks and unlocks, I just pull on end of cable. Hole was made at some point by previous owner so he must have had similar problems when he owned, it's something I could mess around with and remedy but it would only happen again because of poor design. If buying a Sequoia used check the frame, mine needed a small amount of welding, pointed this out to the seller along with need for timing belt and he knocked $500 off price, welding only cost $150. Rest of frame fine apart from surface rust, it was previously inspected by Toyota and deemed OK. Seems all negative up to now, oh did I mention the gas mileage, lol, but the reason I chose the Sequoia is the excellent reputation of the engine and transmission, peripherals will go wrong as in any other car but the engines and transmissions on these are bulletproof and second to none, probably outlast me! It's also roomy as hell so great for utility and recreation use. Found that parts are relatively cheap and there is loads of room to work on it given the space under engine bay and ground clearance so great for the enthusiastic DIY'er like me! One or two other comments, interior is dated but mine has held up very well. I know I just mentioned parts being relatively cheap but there was an exception, $10 for a single bulb that had to be bought from Toyota, it was the one for the 'D' light on the dash display, the good news is that the fix is very easy, took me less than 20 minutes-thankfully loads of YouTube videos on how to fix and repair stuff! The fact the previous owner had a brand new $60,000 Sequoia sitting in his double garage encouraged me to buy this one, always a good sign when someone replaces a car with the same make and model!

In 2003 I was driving a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am. Because I have 5 kids this car was just not big enough. When I went to the dealership to test drive this Sequia I fell in love with it instantly. It had everything that I was looking for. I am a sports car person and driving a vehicle like a van is just not me. This Sequia looked great on the outside. It was MY STYLE. It rides so quiet and smooth and drives like a dream. The kids are very fond of the entertainment system for them and it comes in handy on those long road trips we take. I've had my Sequia since August of 2003 and have not found anything that I do not like about it.

Purchased my 2004 Sequoia in 2006 with 25k miles. Maintained over the years inside and out per dealer specs. 265k miles currently and still runs and looks like new! No major repairs or replacements. Consistently complimented by friends, strangers and dealer service techs on its current overall condition. Best and most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Super dissatisfied with my prior vehicles which included Volvo, Jaguar, and Lincoln. Toyota/Lexus family (my wife drives a Lexus GX) for life!

My Sequioa has been an exceptional vehicle. It was purchased w/ 108k miles. I changed timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, serpentine belt, battery, and did a full synthetic transmission flush. I always use full synthetic oil changes every 6k miles and run nothing but 93 octane for fuel. MAKESAN AMAZING DIFFERENCE when you invest in the best maintenance practices. Extremely impressive take power, decent fuel economy for a big suv, and very comfortable. The only thing I need to do is add LED headlights cause the factory ones aren't great to see at night. I have 149k miles now and it runs flawless. I have put 2015 4runner wheels on it and it sits higher and looks amazing. So thankful for Toyota brand!! Pulls my 6x12 trailer effortlessly too!

This is my second Toyota and its the best machine I have ever owned. From the first day it has been a joy and to drive. With no effort I dart in and out of traffic as if it was a car. Taking it through the mountains of Napa Ca you would think the curves would give one reason for caution. Not here. It continues to amazie me how well it handles on the road, in turns, hard curves, quick stops. With a full load of seveal cases of wine it does not change the ride. How their can be any way a rating company can not give this truck a number one or best in class must just what to be kind to the other manufactures.

We bought an 04 4WD SR5. We have a dog, 3 kids, and travel with lots of stuff (kids 4, 2 ,4 mos). Rides well, no build issues. Fit finish ok (a few panel gaps). Mileage has been poor but typical. This is a 4 speed trans too. Older 4WD has not been an issue, we live in Maine and works well. But it lacks little things. 2nd row lock for seat fold up to enter third row. No fold flat. No remote start option or camera accessible cup holder in 2nd row. Lack of lateral support in front seats. No power lift gate (my wife has tough time reaching this). Overall I’d consider a Suburban or Denali over this if I made the purchase today on a new 07-08. Used however I’d get the Toyota.

We traded a Honda Odyssey for the SR5 and are very pleased. Two cautions for those coming from a minivan. 1. you lose the pass through between the captains chairs to the 3rd row. 2. the Odyssey sipped gas, the Sequoia guzzles it. BUT it rides like a cloud on wheels and feels as safe as a bank vault. Overall, bigger than the van but you lose cargo space in the back - par for the course for 4x4's. Bottomline, if 4 wheel drive is not important to you then stick with a minivan. Otherwise, this is a great car.

Sequoias are built on a Toyota truck frame, and drives like a truck. Only 165,000 miles after our 7,000 mile vacation in January seeing friends and family along the West Coast. Not any repairs of major concerned. We say to all, "can't get any better". Will tow our 5200 pound trailer with ease. Will carry most any group eight and under. Treat it like family and it will be there for you as family would for you. Just for info...I'm a Toyota retired Toyota MDT that opened up his own Toyota shop in 1988, Retiring at the end of 2015.

2002 model year. A fun truck to drive, especially on the highway. Surprisingly quiet for a huge vehicle. Plenty of space (roomier than the Land Cruiser). Comfortable ride. Slight growl on the motor but powerful. Good acceleration. Excellent braking. Decent size storage even with the 3rd row. Strong and quick cooling A/C.

Bought in 2004. Thought I would drive till the wheels fell off. Did all the services. Had a few pricey fixes. Been hit and have hit. This truck was a tank. Then I hit a Vette wrong and bent the frame. My Sequoia went to heaven at 191k 2-2022. I cried. Everyone thinks I am crazy but I want another from the same year. Most comfortable, durable, reliable ride ever. RIP my Sweet Beast of a truck.

I purchased this truck in the last week and I am extremely impressed. Although it's a big truck, it doesn't feel that big when driven. The ride is unbelievable. It has a firm ride (unlike large vehicles) but handles bumps and corners extremely good as well. Acceleration is very good even though the motor has a 240 HP rating. It feels very strong. This is the 4th Toyota I have owned (second truck, 1st was a 4-Runner) and at this point I would never buy from any other manufacturer. Their build quality is impecable, their prices reasonable, their resale great, and they last forever. What more could an owner want!

I've owned Ford Explorer, Jeep Cherokee, Dodge Durango - this is my SECOND Sequoia, what does that say about the car? Ultimate in comfort; I've got two 6'5" family members, and the four of us (plus 2 large Rottweilers) are comfortable in this great car on a weekly 3-hour drive to New England ski areas! The power folding exterior mirrors are a godsend when getting on and off the ferry. . . if this car could get great gas mileage, it would be perfect (we get 17 city and 20 highway).

My 2004 Sequioa with 130,000 miles isn't that great when compared to my 2003 Tahoe with 258,000. When comparing the two, the Sequioa isn't nearly as powerful, fuel economy isn't as good, and the towing capacity pales in comparison. The Sequioa doesn't ride or drive as well as the Tahoe. Many of the plastic pieces are falling of of the Sequioa, but I guess the worst thing for me is the drivers seat. If you are over 6 feet tall with long legs then you can forget about being comfortable while driving because the seat will not move back far enough. I will definitely buy the Chevy Tahoe again. It's a great truck. The Sequioa, I doubt that I'll ever buy another.

Unbelievable beauty, comfort, safety, reliability, and CLASS!! No problems in over two years........(this site would not allow me to put in the actual year, which is a 2001..Arrows don't work for year of car) Always prefer to take this vehicle over my husband's Mercedes, which is newer. I have the niftiest car and would not EVER drive anything but a Toyota. My Forerunner was outstanding and this is even better, if possible...........Thanks Toyota!!!!!

Received 8 miles per gal when tested on hwy. Very poor gas mileage in comparison to what it should be. Style sold us but not very kid friendly. No access to 3rd row seat and no cup holders for 2nd row seat reachable by children. Mostly disappointed with efficiency.

Rear Hatch has flaws

I was disappointed with this vehicle. I had always heard how wonderful Toyota was and actually I liked my jeep grand cherokee much better. I only traded it because I needed a bigger vehicle. The rear liftgate has been stuck shut 7 times and this seems to be a common problem. Also - the rear window stopped working after about 50K miles. When the seats are folded up, they slam backwards and can catch a kids hand or foot if you're not careful. I also think for the price, the passenger side should have a power lumbar (like the Chevys and Jeeps have). Overall - the seats are stiff and not comfortable - when I trade I will be going back to Jeep or to a Suburban.

I have had my Sequoia in the shop 4 times and only have 2,000 miles on it. I've had a new set of tires and rims put on, but there is still something wrong with the rear end. The dealership says it rides like it should and if that is the case, then I'm very disappointed. Drive you vehicle out on the highway and put at least 25 miles on it, before you decide to keep that one.

I love the size of the Sequoia, but I have had lots of problems... more than all my other cars combined. Replaced the transmission, rear window stopped working after almost decapitating my dog because it randomly opens and shut, the VSC shuts down on rainy day... loss of power when turning, the engine depowered while driving on the highway and almost got me killed. It eats tires... supposedly a problem with the $2500 VSCcomputer. The paint quality stinks! Scratches!

Big, roomy and quiet. More space than my wife's minivan. Very well built. You have the feeling that you are well protected in the event of a crash.

I traded my 03 Sequoia SR5 for a fully loaded leftover 05 Limited. I loved the SR5, but wanted DVD, sunroof, leather. The ride is great, cargo room exceptional, comfort is awesome.

I upgraded to the Sequoia so I would have room to hall my kids and all their sports gear around. I love the comfort and the ability to fold the seats up or remove them depending on how much room I need. It has a smooth ride and is just as comfortable as my Lexus ES300 was but with lots more room!

We got ours in 2000 , and love it we also get better gas mileage than most at 20 to 23 for one of the largest Suv's. It was also funny when we moved to Hawaii the dealer did not no what it was.LOL

I love my Sequoia! The three rows are fantastic, especially since they all fold down for when I have to put "stuff" in it. My two boys are in football, so we have all the practice equipment and everything. We bought the car a day before we drove to Florida, and had a great! experience. I tell everyone I know how much I love it. I will never buy any car other than a Toyota.

This has been a good vechile, except there is no catch to open the gas tank if the mechanism should fail without taking off the skip plate. I hauled a travel trailer, and now need to replace the struts. I was told by the salesman when I bought this vechile that I could do this without any problems; he was wrong.

The vehicle has excellent handling, particularly for a SUV. It comes with a list of options, such as heated seats, front and rear temperature control, a 6- disk CD changer, and even front and rear audio controls. Its the perfect vehicle for a family to its size (room for 8 passengers) but also for the single guy who wants a large vehicle with style. I am extremely happy with my purchase and I always get compliments on its style. The only negative thing about the vehicle is its gas mileage.

This is our second Sequoia we've owned! I love driving it. It's just the right size. I traded my first Sequoia for a GMC Denali XL, I didn't keep it long and I traded back for another Sequoia Limited. The Sequoia 's back door is the same size as the front door therfore making it alot easier to get a car seat in and out of the vehicle! That was a big factor in purchasing this car. I love the roomy interior also. The Sequoia tows really well also, we have two jet skis and a boat, we have no problem at all! Over all I love my car!

Excellent vehicle. Lots of space without feeling like you are riding around in your living room like in a Suburban (also the Sequoia has a far superior sound system.). Excellent pickup and enjoyable to ride or drive around in. The third seat(s) are so easy to fold up or remove. As an added benefit the price to service the vehicle is far below that of a Volvo. We love our Sequoia!

Purchased new Sequoia 8/04.Check engine light came on at 22 miles. The wheels started vibrating since day one. Dealer in another town changed all tires, aligned and tested the vehicle. It still has the vibration.Wonder if the manufacturer made a lemon? Already made four different visits to the dealerships.Still trying to solve the persistant problem.Anyone has any sugestions? Toyota seems to be ignoring this problem.
