2022 Toyota Tacoma Review

The Tacoma is not only a stalwart of the midsize truck segment but also of the off-roading community. For decades it has offered buyers a competent canvas for countless off-road upgrades, and Toyota has been steadily offering more and more aggressive off-roading options to the Tacoma lineup. For 2022, Toyota has given its relatively new Trail Edition some asthestic as well as mechanical tweaks, while the extremely capable TRD Pro gets even more so with unique suspension parts. Oh, and it gets an eye-searing new color too.

Introduced last year, the Trail Edition was a limited-production model based on the budget SR5 trim level and featured a few off-road and practical goodies, such as lockable bed boxes. For 2022, Toyota has made a limited-slip rear differential standard equipment and added 1.1 inches of lift to the front suspension and 0.5 inch to the rear. New bronze wheels add half an inch to the Tacoma's track, and skid plates now adorn the Trail Edition's underbody. Toyota also brings a handful of new colors and optional graphics to the mix. The Trail Edition will continue to be available only in the double-cab body style.

The TRD Pro gets some new suspension hardware in the form of forged upper control arms, to allow for increased suspension travel, and it will ride 1.5 inches higher in the front and 0.5 inch higher in the rear. Like the Trail Edition, the Pro will also get a new wheel design and optional graphics. And about that new color? Toyota calls it Electric Lime Metallic. We call it painful.

No massive changes are in store for the 2022 Tacoma, but a few tasty tweaks should keep buyers interested in the ubiquitous pickup for another year or two. The Toyota Tacoma remains one of the most versatile and capable midsize trucks on sale today.
