2015 Audi A8
** May 2020 Update** Added Michelin Pilot Sport 4s summer tires. Car has 51k on it, no problems. Added Apple Car Play. Tweaks: needle sweep @ start & close windows/roof via remote. Still in motoring Nirvana ** Nov 2019 Update ** Turned 45k today. The car continues to amaze. Regularly scheduled maintenance is all it's needed. On the highway, the car is an absolute beast...... It is so … hard to keep within 10mph of the limit... other cars line up behind me and we convoy. Just completed a paint refresh with total detail, and the car looks showroom new inside and out. This is not a head-turning exterior design like Jaguar, so don't expect folks to be staring at you. Interior looks like it came over on the boat from Germany... no creases in the leather or creaks in the cabin. The 22-way seats with massage really dial you in to your preferred seating position. 2015 did not offer Apple Car Play, I've ordered an aftermarket unit. The new A8's are almost all touch-screen controlled, a step back if you ask me.
All systems work as they are supposed to. The 4.0 twin turbo-charged V8 sings so sweetly... was cruising along at 85 when circumstances dictated I maximize output by completely opening the throttle, and looked down to see 120 in a flash. I hope this car is as reliable as it is fun to drive.... it certainly qualifies as a 10-year or more keeper.
Did find a new dealer who is responsive, communicative, intelligent. They are a 40 minute drive in to downtown Pittsburgh. In addition to having a nice meal downtown while my car is service, I drive right by the crappy dealer and flip them off!
** Nov 2018 Update ** When you play in this league, you expect to be satisfied and the A8 delivers in every arena. The lone blight is the dealer experience. I cannot overstate the supreme confidence this engine inspires. It forces you to re-calibrate your senses because you CAN make that pass and you CAN make it into that spot as the acceleration is, as Edmunds has describes, a flood of power. Kudos to those of you with an S8, how do you not get tickets weekly? Had the "pleasure" of the accident mitigation system stop the car from 55mph as we rounded a sharp curve to find a Navigator planted in our lane. The Audi slammed on the brakes and we stopped about three feet short of the Dead Lincoln. Wow what an engineering feat. This is truly a Jekyll and Hyde experience...put it in Comfort mode and effortlessly coddle your passengers for hundreds of miles at a time....dump those passengers at the bus station and dial up Dynamic mode and avoid the interstate all together as you attack the twisties on your way home! If you want me to pick nits, it's dealer-related. There is a known vibration remedied by replacing the downpipes (which were redesigned to accommodate the fix), and on my first visit to the dealer they said is was the torque converter operating correctly...WRONG. Subsequent visit with TSB info in hand and they changed their tune. I shouldn't be the one who has to diagnose issues, especially known ones. Looking to switch dealerships for future service. Only other nit is highway mpg is not as advertised.. I cannot get 30mpg on the highway no matter how I coddle it, so I'll settle for 27-28. Around town mpg's are spot on at 20, so my combined of 22.4 over 9000 miles is as-published. I did buy a set of dedicated winter wheels/tires and couldn't be happier. The cold-weather compound on the Conti T810S is a real confidence boost while highway driving through slush and puddles. I know because it literally snowed the day after I had them put on! Everything inside the car works beautifully. Once you become familiar with the dash layout you don't have to look away from the road to get things done, and that is the bane of the touchscreen: You must look to find the intended information target, where I can run my finger and use tactile sensation to find the correct command. But nearly every manufacturer is heading down TouchScreen Avenue... Since I bought CPO and couldn't pick the options I wanted, the only one I long for now that winter has arrived is the heated steering wheel, a minor inconvenience I have remedied with a very nice pair of driving gloves from Orvis.
Original Review May 2018 Moving from a CTS6 Performance with it's awesome chassis, the A8 outshines GM's iron in virtually every category. But, to be fair, the A8 is $30k MORE so it should be better. This engine is magnificent, rocketing to 60 in 4.3 seconds. No matter where you are in the rev range, stomping on the gas just plants you back in the seat. 0-60; 40-80; 80-?? it does not matter this car is just Point and Shoot. The Dynamic Steering and Sports Differential give you a degree of confidence and road feedback unparalleled in cars this size. The interior is better than MB or BMW.... coddling, expansive, top quality materials deftly blended to accent and compliment each other.
