Now I get it - first 'real' car at 53

2023 BMW 3 Series
The car: 2023 330i sapphire (metallic black) with M Sport package and tan interior, Hi-Fi sound, iDrive 8. Didn't plan on M Sport but do think it adds a lot to the experience. Body kit, color-keyed exterior, headliner, steering wheel and other interior details, and 19" wheels are real nice but not trying to pose as actual M. Concerned that tires are staggered (can't rotate), run flat, no … spare, and performance summer tires - all those are firsts for me. Had to replace a tire at low mileage due to screw in tread but too close to sidewall for anyone to repair. To match the other OEM Turanzas, I had to go dealership and spend $500. They sure grip, though :) Will switch to all-seasons for extra wear. Not sure yet I'll stay run flat or take chances with Slime and a compressor. Won't carry a spare in the trunk for sure.
For reference, my cars: '87 Civic Si used in '88, '05 Toyota pickup new in '04, '09 Fusion V6 in '15. Also bought new Sequoia SR5s on '02 and '17 for wife/family. I travel a lot so drive many (many) cars, some nice but not the luxury brands.
Hadn't been able to get excited about replacing the pickup then Fusion for many years. Realized I could if the choice was engaging and fun to drive but not flashy, great sound system, good utility (storage, seating). In the end knew I wasn't ready to do the 'smart' thing and buy used late model, and I do value new for many reasons. We do keep cars. Without wife's input, I probably would've went Civic Si manual $31K. Non-starter with wife and its looks are a bit too much for what it's got. Drove the new Integra manual and loved it except for road noise and rear headroom at $37K. Drove TLX A-spec, which was a clean, fun, well-built choice at $45K. Drove IS300 and IS350F Sport. They look awesome, but 300 was non-starter due to lack of power. Next step at 350F started well over $50K, had them down to like $48K but still didn't like the V6 torque vs car weight, and although seats were most comfy of the lot, the cockpit is simply in disarray. We're totally Toyota people (have a Toyota boat if you can believe it). Lexus interior was worst of the lot - looked like a team of people cobbled together prior components. Really did come down to 350F vs 330i. The next morning, we drove the 330i and that afternoon drove it home at something like $47K++.
The 330i cockpit captured me immediately. So clean and looks like one very smart individual laid it out. I was dead set against tan interior and really wanted straight black. The tan trimmed with brushed 'aluminum', the silver mesh trim, and even the black M Sport headliner immediately looked exactly right - gorgeous (sporty?) from the design and trim, and luxurious/classic with the tan. The curved display felt exactly right and amazing to me - still does. I do spend most time in Android Auto with Google Maps full screen and LiveOne (legacy Slacker) streaming music. I'm new to both Android Auto and Carplay and do use the latter sometimes now.
Responsiveness at low RPM (torque vs car weight) is very noticeably more fun than the IS350F. The Lexus does feel strong later into a pull, but the 330i feels ready to dance at all times. We don't have active dampers, but between 35-series tires and the suspension tune, it has literally zero 'float' but we find it great on road trips. My commute is measured on how the one or two sections play out. So awesome to send into corners!
Speaking of road trips...SoCal to Sacramento cruising 80 with three adults and lots of baggage: 35 MPG with semi frequent pulls. SoCal to Phoenix 80 in CA, 85 in AZ, two adults: 34 MPG. I can totally get some 20 MPG runs if getting after it, and could see well north of 35 if MPG was the intent.
So the car is so behaved and easy to drive fast, I think the normal person will be their fastest self in this car. When I have others drive it, there's no warnings to give - the car will do what you want and more without requiring a bunch of skill. Drove my friend's Mustang GT stick. Gotta work with that car - it'll get you sidways on a pull and felt a bit light in the front end on a sweeper. Much power (more) and faster, but honestly I think the 330i would be faster on a twisty road. So easy to push into turns. No stress on traction braking, cornering or accelerating. Just get in and be fast and safe.
Many smart features. Example: speed limiter. Keeps you from going over a speed you set. Great in traffic across town.
I am concerned about maintenance costs. Hear the dealer would prefer to replace rotors when pads are done. Declined the xtended warranty because it was $100/month for five years. That's a real $6K to extend the warranty a little bit.
There are times on a pull I wish there was more power, but 90% of the time the car's as fast as I want and can always send hard enough into and out if corners. Sticks like nothing I've driven.
Best quote...met up with a friend that has a normally aspirated V-8 auto M3 with an exhaust. He drove my car, I drove his and followed him around his home turf twisties. In the end, his feedback was my steering and overall experience was so precise, and he was sure I had the turbo six.
Great car and I feel like the most appreciative owner. So (SOOO!) many BMW in SoCal, but doubt 10% of them appreciate them like I do.
